This piece was inspired by the figure of Sanada Yukimura, a warlord who was a tactical genius but who was swept up by the events of his times which ended in tragedy in the summer campaign of the siege of Osaka in 1615.
The piece is roughly divided into three sections and begins with semiquavers played by the woodwinds. An atmospheric melody conjured by bamboo flutes signals Yukimura’s military preparedness that overwhelmed even Tokugawa’s forces, with a faster tempo and the interweaving notes of the drums, woodwinds, and brass instruments from C depicting Yukimura’s heroics that had forced even Ieyasu to flee. The euphonium solo from K celebrates the resonant theme of Yukimura before the piece closes with a moving ending where the melody is passed on to the woodwinds and with the brass instruments eventually brought in.
This arrangement is based on the current version (FML-0032) published in 2009, and its orchestration and structure have been revised to satisfy the orchestration and duration requirements of the Small Band category of the All-Japan Band Competition.
