Wait, I thought kratos already knew this, since throughout Gow norse, he does not care about fate and destiny so long as he can protect those he cares about, "another lie told by the gods, nothing is written that cannot be unwritten" As to Odin, he is trying to fight/defy "fate" to control his outcome. I love how this scene also shows the ultimate answer to Odin's biggest problem that he could never face. Odin was so obsessed with controlling his destiny that he took the entire world hostage and slaughtered thousands just to do it. Yet, the Norns reveal here that the only real way to change your "fate" is to change who you are as a person and it's only you never changing that makes your destiny clear. Of course, Odin probably heard this message long before our heroes and was like "Fuck that, you guys just haven't tried to change your fate hard enough!"

Not just a dig at Kratos, but at the revitilization of the series as a whole compared to what it initially was. In a scene that's already playing with the ideas of protagonists and scripts, this is a direct toss to the audience itself and what players have come to look for from the series.

Their reason for making the Norse Era a duology is because the development for these games is fairly massive, they each take around 5 years to make. So the devs felt that they didn't want fans to wait 10 years to see the story resolve cause if this was the second part of a trilogy then...... damn the final part would have come out in 2028.

The fact that a child, a middle aged woman, and an elderly woman, with no weapons or magic, could instill such unease and frustration, in 2 INCREDIBLY strong Gods, and "The Smartest Man Alive", with nothing more than words, shows you how TRULY incredible this scene was written and acted. They know the script, but whether the ending remains the same or changes depends on the people involved in it.

I like to think of that as an early hint that fate, as a concept, doesn’t really exist for the Norse. That didn’t seem like patronization, but a little burst of glee that the prediction was defied. Their “fate” is defined by the choices everyone in a situation has proven they’ll take. If someone, or enough people, elect to be different, to choose something else against their natures, then they can defy fate.

This scene is truly powerful. There are no destiny, no prophecy, no fate, only choices you make. And norns make their "prophecies" based on the predictability of the person. Ragnarok was inevitable because Odin never changed even in his last moment. Freya lost her son because she never learned to let go.

Well the Norns have powerful magic but over the mind and where the entrances to their home is. But they can see the future as they are Jotunn unless GoT contradicts it. But even with that they state Destiny and Scripts are an illusion based on how predictable one’s actions are. As if they didn’t have any ability to see the future than they wouldn’t have known where Loki was or whom was plotting to kill him. So the Fates of Greece make the story. The Fates of the Nine Realm tell the story and only know it mostly because the actors are predictable not because of absolute destiny.

It is only when people change their ways that their futures change too. For example, I was a heavy smoker, and I was predicted to die from lung cancer based on my smoking habit. But if I changed my bad habits fast enough, I could prevent myself from getting lung cancer. The norns only warn you if you keep doing that, you will get this.

The Norn tell Kratos what will happen if he continued in his path, mocking him slightly because no one really changes (oh, he still kill gods but now feels bad about it). But Kratos has changed, we realize that he can no longer be a destroyer, for Atreus' sake. He became a general, a redeemer, and eventually a god worthy of worship.

This actually proves them even more right. They’re not the same as the Sisters of fate. Firstly, it isn’t enough to do the opposite of an expected outcome to avoid it(Freya trying to protect Baldur from his death, Kratos not wanting to kill gods due to the fallout) when you don’t plan ahead(Baldur becomes resentful and gets killed, Kratos cannot hide forever and triggers ragnarok). Also, fate isn’t permanent but it also cannot be changed if you do nothing. For example, Kratos is merely reacting to events around him, making him angry and falling back to his old nature. On the other hand, Odin is continuously trying to guess the future and making decisions solely based on that without realising present problems remain unsolved. End of the day, the Norns are right that Kratos’ fate is sealed if he continues to be angry and vengeful with Asgard but foregoing the impact of his actions.

From what I’ve seen here: Urd (past) seems to be the best here: capable of using anyone’s past to guess the ending. Not quite. Norske myths do not perceive them as past, present and future, Nornir were perceived as Present (Verðandi), debt/should, or basically the immediate future (Skuld), and fate (Urðr).

These are the Norse version of the sisters of fate, in a different way that allows them access to see the future based on choices, but not directly influence it like the Greek sisters of fate can. MMM is a goddess of the moon, specifically it’s phases, and is used to represent three stages of life, but she as a god and it’s mythos have nothing to do with seeing or changing fate or the future. Their appearance is the similarly to the MMM because of its connection to time, nothing more.

The norns were cruel cause they knew that this cruelty gave kratos that chance to move away from his nature. But of course it wasn't quite 'enough' even if it completely altered his destiny. His death began when he stayed his hand against Heimdall and his rattle came when he said 'open your heart to their suffering' to his son. A new man was born at that moment.

Speaking of which, i already typed this but, I you'll see something about these characters' dialog after reading this. The youngest speaks with the words of the characters like they are her own (like in first person). The oldest speaks directly to them as if she is the only one that can understand the concept of "you" when interacting with others (second person) . And the middle aged one speaks about the actions of the characters while addressing them, (third person).

You can tell all three of them are a bit disturbed by their interaction with them, I love how creepy the Norns are but how they are technically completely correct in everything they said, even "Kratos of Sparta" dying, I believe she was being metaphorical when she said that, the 'old' Kratos died so that a new Better Kratos could come into being

@@PBart7 That is my conclusion as well. Kratos is trying to keep from becoming the same person he was, trying to keep from becoming the Ghost of Sparta again. I think that the prediction she meant what you said because clearly this Kratos is far different than the one who was born and raised in Sparta, far removed from the god of war who sent his nation into war against his fellow Greeks, and far away from the one who destroyed Sparta in pursuit of his vengeance against his father.

This scene is so incredible. Not only is it a giant (no pun intended) writing joke, it's so deeply tied to the events that will unfold and have unfolded previously. In an interview with the game's narrative director, Matt Sophos, he says that during Ragnarok, Kratos defies his fate by following Faye's words and listening to his son, telling him to "open his heart to... the suffering of others." Not only is it a direct contrast to what he said in the raider camp in the previous game, it's what he himself has done since the previous God of War games, in learning to love Faye and Atreus. One of God of War Ragnarok's many themes, including fatalism vs free (seen in the scene) will and atonement for one's sins (paralleled from Kratos by Thor), is grief. Kratos continues to grieve Faye in this game, daresay more than in 2018, and it shows, but in his grief, he finds wisdom through Faye's words: "To grieve deeply is to have loved fully," and to pass that wisdom onto Atreus while understanding the truth of it himself in that moment is what allowed Kratos to defy fate once again. I believe that Kratos' true fate remained in Greece, and when he murdered the Fates, he became a fateless being. I believe that carries over into the nine realms, and how, in a dogmatic sense, he is able to defy fate once more. By all accounts, he should be dead. His character, as the Norns say, is to "kill gods." On paper, yeah. That's what he does. that's what the game is about; killing gods. Does it still happen? Absolutely. Fuck Heimdall, all my homies hate Heimdall. But that's not who he is by the end of the game. If what I said about Kratos being a fateless being is to be taken as true, then Kratos changes his character. Kratos will still kill gods, but that is not all his character anymore. Sophos said in an interview that Kratos, in this game, goes from being Kratos the Destroyer to Kratos the "Rebuilder," and that is what I believe his character is after Ragnarok, if there is to be a Nornic (I made that word up) description of him. I think his arc over the past two games of learning to love his son, and learning to love beyond Atreus (and to that extent, himself), is absolutely beautiful. I think about it all the time, and I seriously wonder where we will see the next game go. It's said this is the last Norse game, so I'm wondering what mythology we'll encounter next. I love stories where the protagonist has already gone through the metaphorical rebirth, and their character is tested against the sins of their past. I would adore to see Kratos travel to other lands in search of gods to aid him in rebuilding Greece, to continue God of War Ragnarok's theme of atonement for one's sins. What greater sin to atone for than to rebuild the LITERAL CIVILIZATION that he destroyed? Also, I don't know if this was intentional, but the Norn who speaks in script, Ver6andi says "Exeunt omnes," which is Latin for 'Exit all,' a stage direction. Ur6 calls Mimir 'Puck,' so I'm wondering if they're referencing Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and what the symbolism of equating Mimir to Puck would be. Anyone have a thought about that, please reply.

Urd mentions storytelling, the second act in particular, so I like to think of it as a fourth wall break of sorts. If anything, the Norns felt like us, the players, questioning how this story will end with Kratos' character arc. At some point, it ALL has to end.

The norns are obviously inspired, if not directly taken as, the witches from Macbeth. But their role is subverted by the way Kratos approaches them and their prophecy, or more accurately them and the prophecy of the giants. In Macbeth the instigating incident is Macbeth meeting the witches, and every single action he takes is based on that prophecy. In Greek tragedies the characters always lead themselves to the fate they try to avoid. Kratos is preparing for the prophecy to come true by training Atreus to be independent, but he is not letting it dictate his actions. He reacts as he feels he should when a situation arises. Leaving Heimdall alive would have given Odin an advanced notice to the preparations against him, while also leaving someone that in the best circumstance, only Kratos was equipped to take care of, someone that would also be directly targeting Atreus. The point the norns make about using the archetypes of the characters in the game is also incredibly important. Odin is an archetype, he is literally called the all father, hence why the narrative twist of the giant prophecy worked, it was accurate, but technically so. Neil gaiman's Norse mythology takes a similar view on the characters, at the end Ragnarok happens, and all the gods set everything up to do it again. When you hear the story of Hercules or Jason the story will always end the same way, but people still repeat the stories again and again, if the gods are based on prayer and belief, what do the retelling of stories do to them? Even with the difference in focus, and style between retellings the core character must remain the same, no matter how many times you hear the story. An interesting note to add, is that despite being fortune tellers, or prophetic being none of them tell the future, Urd explains the meaning of their role more directly, but the other two read stage directions and lines, both being part of the present moment. Even the part where ver6andi says "exeunt Omnes," was repeating a past explanation or foretelling, not uttering a future event. When the norns say they can't see the future, they mean it

It's the particular take the Norns have about destiny what makes this whole scene so good. They outright deny it exists in the first place, something Kratos agrees as well. It all comes down to individual choices and the ability to change. That's why unlike the Sisters of Fate, Kratos wouldn't have been able to punch his way out of this one. I like the way the two parallel and contrast with each other. The Greek fates had literal power over the past and present, but just lost due to one angry man's invincible plot armor. The Norse Norns had no powers over anything, but leave the same guy with the literal "I'm-too-angry-so-I'll-break-with-space-and-time" shocked and powerless. In a way, a really nice progression of the franchise's evolution and direction.

I do love that everything Urd and Verandi said came to pass. They never claimed that Heimdall was going to kill Atreus, simply that he intended to do so in Asgard. It's the belief that Heimdall was going to, and Kratos's nature to assume the worst, that lead him to attacking Heimdall; which results in Heimdall planning on killing Atreus when he returns to Asgard. So Kratos learns that Heimdall intended to kill Aretus then, which lead him to "do what he does best." and it triggered Ragnarok. Even the prophecy of Kratos's death can be seen at the end. They said "Kratos of Sparta" will die, and he did. The wrathful Godkiller died when he chose to not kill Thor or Odin. Kratos of Sparta would not have hesitated, but Kratos the Father of Atreus? Different story, different character.

This is one of my favorite cutscenes in the whole game. I like how they reinforce the idea that Baldur was going to die even if we didn’t kill him since he wouldn’t stop pushing. Thor decided not to fight anymore and was killed by Odin and he dissolved right away. I just realized something about these characters. The youngest speaks with the words of the characters like they are her own (like in first person). this is by far the most interesting take on fate and prophecy i have ever seen. The sisters of fate in geek mythology were consumed by power and were so easily fooled by Kratos. Here, Kratos is speechless. The norms were the most “in your face” and honest about their intentions. He tried to do that with Heimdall, but with Thor he learned that it takes more then defeating your enemy and sparing them which was his mistake with Heimdall. I think the original script of his death is Kratos and Thor duking it out with full bloodlust in both. Thrudd gets caught into the mess(When Kratos gets the upper hand on Thor) which pushes Atreus to act against his father by imploring him to stand down from killing Thor since Thrudd is in the way. This hesitation by Kratos creates an Opening for Odin to attack and kill Kratos or weaken him as Thor gets the killing blow whichever one. This leads to Atreus crying in not only seeing his father's death but being the root cause of it. A pain that would spawn into hatred/resentment as he waits till adulthood in which he takes his revenge on Odin and Thor. Kratos changed this by connecting with Thor as they are both fathers and no longer the weapons of war that they both regret being. It was always unsettling to me on how fast Odin got into the battlefield when he decided not to fight Kratos no more and then soon after Thrud also makes it there. The setup was there for Kratos downfall to come at the hands of those two.

@@mysteryace2129 actually according to one of the sections of the ‘Ragnarok’ wikia page of this game, Kratos gets killed by Thor after his head was smashed in from a battle where they unleashed their rage on each other. However, the raw power of Kratos’ rage became difficult for him to handle which lead to his demise at Thor’s hand. Thor did this out of revenge after knowing both Thrud and Sif were killed alongside the Midgardians. Atreus comes to his side and cries for him as how it was shown in the murals in the ending of GOW4 then later he gets killed by Heimdall in the end. Im uncertain if this is truly how it could have played out, but I think yours would have made most sense.

It's hinted through dialogues that Mimir was originally a deity from around western Europe - specifically Britain/Scotland (which kinda explains his Scottish accent). Puck (Mimir's alleged real name) was a trickster that worked for Oberon the Fairy King, and the trials thrown at the trio (Kratos, Mimir and Freya) before facing the Norns had them face their past regrets and their guilt. Mimir's trial had him face Sigrun - his former lover from the Valkyries who he felt guilty for not being able to help, and her illusion confronted Mimir about not being able to help his friends, including Titania, the Fairy Queen and Oberon's wife.

Maybe I’m overthinking this but I like to believe this was the moment that Freya fully forgave Kratos for killing Baldur. It’d be one thing to hate him for fulfilling a prophecy you tried desperately to stop but it’s another to be told by the literal authority on fate and destiny that neither exist and that everything that happened from Baldur’s suffering to Krato eventually killing him was ultimately because of your actions. She basically got the “Here’s the reason you suck and was wrong” speech and I loved every moment of it😂

Everyone can make they own choice and yet the choices they make is so predictable that the Norns seem like omniscience. I like that because it contradict nothing to the grand scheme of the game story. Kratos is right to not believe in fate, Atreus is right that Kratos will die if he did nothing, Odin is right that he can survive Ragnarok. But in the end, it is the choices they make that eventually lead them to the fate they seek to avoid. So I know Kratos will survive if he can change himself and make a different choice that he normally wouldn't make.

One interpretation is life has no meaning. That in that is infinite possibilities. The Norns can foresee the future but as they can see and predict as most are very predictable it’s seems like they know all of destiny. Also it could also mean that any foresight lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy as a simple course of chain reaction not absolute destiny. So that is why the Norns don’t tell him what to do only what he most likely will do. It goes with the theme of the game. Wisdom. Greek was Vengeance Norse was Wisdom. As Odin craves it. Loki too but not to Odin’s degree. The Jotnar have great wisdom from their foresight.

And I love what they've done here: The whole God of War series is a lineup of self-fulfilling prophecies. From Odin trying to prevent Ragnarok, all the way to the Gods of Olympus trying to stop 'The Marked Warrior'. I love that mimir is the only one who actually gets something from the Norns. Kratos and fraya just miss the point but mimir gets the Norns to admit that there is no destiny. In actual Norse mythology, mimir is like an equivalent being to the Norns. the roots of Yggdrasil go into three ancient springs of wisdom. The Norns are the guardians of one of the three springs, and mimir is the guardian of one too. Even better, mimir guarded it alone. it takes three Norns to guard one spring, but only one mimir So the springs of Yggdrasil, the source of the Norns knowledge, wisdom, and prescience. Mimir felt it too.

Ragnarok was a repeat scenario of Kratos' destruction of Olympus. More than once we've seen Kratos die because of the choices he made in life in the previous installments. At the end of GOW 3 he even tries to effectively kill himself. It's only in these two games that he actively makes different decisions, where he chooses to be better, that things change and as a result forges a more fulfilling path in life.

When Urd talks about Heimdall, she says "Because your choices never change, you *will* learn that Heimdall intends to kill your son in Asgard." At that point, Heimdall has no intention to kill him since he's under Odin's protection. Heimdall only wants to kill Atreus *AFTER* Kratos almost murders him with the Draupnir Spear and demands that Atreus not be harmed. What I really like about the Norns is that they tease and fuck with you, but you can tell that they do so in attempts to educate you? It didn't felt like they were acting out of malice, just that they were teasing them out of considering them "idiots" for believing in fate while hoping that this teasing might push them on the right side (rough love kind of stuff); I just felt like it was rather canon-friendly for Norse fates.

As a fan of fun writing, one of the things that I love about the Norns in this game on a meta level is that not only do they represent the three aspects of time (Future, Present, Past) and the three stages of life (the maiden, the mother, and the matron), but here they also represent the three "person perspectives" of writing: first person, second person, and third person. Skuld: as first person speaks from the perspective Kratos, Mimir, and Freya respectively. Verdandi: dictates what the viewer/reader sees as it unfolds. Urd: speaks from the outside perspective. Which is ironically why she seems to speak the most "plain" out of the three because GoW:R is a third person style narrative, so she's the one who "fits in" the most with the other characters in this world.

Actually he later retells that story in a manner that made one of the Fates appear not to be able to clearly see her own vision. She foretold the destruction of Olympus by the God of War, so she got involved with Kratos, and failed to spot the possibility of Kratos taking up the mantle of GoW and later goes on to destroy Olympus. So he didn't actually defy what was foretold back then either, the Norns just point out it ends this way because Kratos has a very limited set of tools when it comes to these kinds of problems.

What’s so amazing about it is here it kinda feels like what a massive event ragnorok is and for the latter above it shows death and destruction. These Norns remind me of the Morrigan from Celtic pantheon in a sense. They both are represented by three members, one representing past(old), present(mature), and future(young). Only difference really is their primary duties. Norns are not malicious beings, just blunt with their foresight. The Morrigan, on the other hand, is seen more as the warring set and tend to favor sides in battle. It would be cool to see that fight.
