I've had this game in the backlog for a long while and your review just convinced me to bump it up

God of War rebooted is what I call a console blockbuster game done right. It's not only got the bells and whistles, but also the gameplay to back it up. Many of its characters get a good bit of spotlight, so you're not fighting with or against strangers. If only the industry could be brave enough to step away from the overdone collectible hunting as a means to primarily stretch game length, but we all know this is not going to happen soon...

I really love how there are multiple points in the story where Atreus or Kratos will say something like, "Should we continue on, or gather resources for the journey?" It makes your choice to pursue sidequests feel completely nestled in the main story, wished more games did this.

I really love how the relationship between Atreus and kratos evolves not only in the narrative but in gameplay aswell, Atreus started out as a joke but later on the game becomes unplayable without him.

Mortym, thanks so much for the excellent review. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. GoW looks like an amazing game and I am excited to play it. The game is on my list to 100%. If all I play are games from your 100% reviews, that leads to thousands of hours of rich gaming enjoyment. As a side note, yesterday on the Steam Summer Sale, Clorthax led me to discover a new RPG that might be a good future candidate for 100%. The game is the Rising Star 2 RPG/Simulation with 129 Steam achievements. There are a lot of people that have hundreds of hours of playtime, some have 1,000+ hours. That says something. The dev is communicative, and down to earth. Beyond that, you're the best!! Keep up the fantastic work!!

As someone who's played through this game multiple times with a lot of love for it, this video breaks it down very well and has very good points throughut it, my only critic is that I would've liked you to talk about the story a little more but overall fantastic video. Also being able to basically upgrade a piece of blue gear to red in new game+ is super cool because the blue gear would have a fantastic ability but the stats it gives Kratos are lackluster compared to for example the armor Valkyries drop and being able to build craft with these new game+ pieces was super enjoyable to me

I loved playing this game with the unarmed/shield focus. I found it a LOT easier, for just about any enemy, to stagger them and do a grapple kill, than to try and switch between weapons depending on their resistances and other factors. Plus, I found that while you are in a kill cutscene from a grapple, you can sometimes still trigger Atreus to attack with his bow, so he can be softening up the next target. Once I got him the arrows that mostly did stun damage, it was SUPER fun to be spamming stun arrows from Atreus, while I ran charging at some poor enemy, do a shoulder tackle or shield slam into his face, and pretty much instantly stun him. Then he'd either just die if he was a minion, or take a HUGE health hit from the cutscene attack. SO much fun to just run in there and grab them and smash the hell out of them. I rarely used the axe or blades, unless it was just required or something.

I'm playing GOW for the first time, and I agree with the fact that sometimes you don't feel like god, since some fights can be a bit hard. And there are some pretty annoying enemies, like the flying dudes and the teleporting witches.

I want this, and FF7r (and Bloodborne) for PC, but I don't like the full (or nearly full) AAA prices right now. When they're on sale for like $20, I'm there, though. So, maybe next year.

I can't remember if I posted this here or on another video. But I also related to this version of Kratos, as a father struggling with his own past while trying to become the father that his child needs. While have loved the GoW games for nearly 20 years, it was nice to make a new connection with a familiar character.

Having a severed head companion looking back towards the player was such a good idea. Every 3rd person game ever is "look at this tough guy's back all game" but GOW gave us a delightful, talking, severed head to look at too.

one of my favourite games of all time its amazing and i think you should mention mimir. mimir is a gamechanger but yes, it has problems. enemy and boss variety is too low and atreus behavior is sometimes strange (storywise) but overall its amazing. combat, graphics, animations and the interaction between the characters are mindblowing p.s. you should try the last of us part 1 after its released on pc :)

4:36 The large variety in gear, which slowly boils down to a few particular sets reminded me of how The Witcher 3 did it. At some point we each realized that only the witcher gear truly mattered. ⚔

You are right, I remember this game being a competent souls-like with a great story. I played GOW3 in PS4 because I got it from PS Plus, this reboot is more mature and the combat way better than the older games (never liked hack ‘n slash games). But with all the great story and all, I still prefer FromSoftware games and Nioh games (which have better combat than Dark Souls itself).

Besides the fantastic story, combat, music etc., what really immersed me is the entire game being "filmed" as one long continuous take (if you don't fast travel ofc :) ). This game is just a technical masterpiece really :)

I just finished this game last night after having it in the backlog forever. I would agree with most of your points. Absolutely loved the story, and the base difficulty curve felt balanced. I do wish the game ended on a stronger note, or at least presented itself slightly differently. The "final" boss of the game kinda felt like a downer. The story surrounding that fight was amazing, but the fight itself I thought didn't have enough impact, and I wasn't even wearing the best gear (was only level 6)

I kind of want to play through the other games again before I do this one (excluding the mobile games). I know I played 1 and 2 back in the day but I don't think I played part 3. Maybe they'll do a PC port of the older games at some point since this one did well.

I feel the combat less interesting the more of these attack skills you get. Like, by the end I spent most of my time abusing those. After all are done, hold out for a few seconds for cooldowns to rest before getting back to skill spamming. That's kind of the best way to play but also not a very fun one, at least after a while/ Kind of hope they fix that for the sequel... and also a better equipment system because this one wasn't very good.

I like my games to be quite challenging so I played this game on "Give me God of War" from the outset, and while I beat it and enjoyed it quite thoroughly, I also had a similar moment of Ludonarrative Dissonance where I was questioning why the GOD OF FREAKING WAR was getting his ass kicked by a regular wolf. I would agree that narratively the correct difficulty is Story mode. So if you like playing on higher difficulties, just be aware that its gonna feel a bit weird at times.

Pardon me for being so blunt Morty: But considering we are close to the same age, why is it that you are only now playing some of the greatest RPGs that have been known in the past generations? I know I am fan of RPGs but I def don't consider myself more than a casual but I know I played some of these top titles during their prime. Sort of a disservice to play them so late when tech has evolved so much in new games. Just really curious to know why, if you would care to indulge me.

@@MortismalGaming Not quite what I was asking, let me clarify: I was asking from the perspective of purely being a fan of RPGs in general. I imagine you have been gaming long before you became an influencer on youtube. so just being a gamer, I am rather surprised you waited this long to play some of the golden oldies. Just curious what kept you from personally from playing some of these games in their prime. As far as your job as an influencer goes, I have never adopted to the social media and rarely participate, so I can hardly have an opinion on what you stream. Just a bit surprised that some of these are your first time playing.

@@MortismalGaming Ouch, I wasn't expecting that. Sorry if this felt too much like a probe but on the other hand congratulations for turning it all around.
