The scriptwriter makes a simple but very important point. When the boys were tending to the animals it was all very raw and messy with sheep dung and harsh grime everywhere. Nature is like that; she's chaotic, grubby and contradictory. Thus when the boys get all up close and physical with each other, it doesn't look remotely un-natural or out of place.

I think this movie is full of antagonisms: Love and nature, loneliness and true love, coldheartedness and warmth, fear and selfconfidence, egoism and responsibilty...Lee is a master of pointing these things out just by using pictures...he does not need many words for this. And I think this is, what this movie makes it so unique...the common thread in this movie is healing and freedom imho, there are many hints. And that's what it makes the love scenes so passionate and wonderful: because of the antagonisms shown in the movie.
