On the outside, Johnny is the way he was raised ... as hard as his father, as cold as his grandmother, and as bleak as their land. Emotionally, he has never loved nor been loved. He has only known anonymous sex ... furtive, hurried and brief ... with nameless strangers. It is easy to believe he has never even kissed, such an intimate act something he would recoil from. Along comes Gheorghe, who shows Johnny what intimacy is ... what it means to truly connect with another person. That love scene in the barn, when Johnny's first instinct is to grope for the most sexual, but Gheorghe stops him and reaches instead for Johnny's hand, kisses his palm and places it on his own face, and shows him instead the tenderness and vulnerability of intimacy. It feels like it is the first time Johnny has ever truly been touched and caressed. Or held in an embrace. He is so hungry for human touch, it is as if the floodgate of emotions in him has burst. He clings to Georghe over and over, like a drowning man, as if he is trying to meld his body to Georghe's. The most powerful love scene of any movie, straight or gay. Without a word uttered.

The movie makes such no big deal with the sexuality of the main characters that I kind of forgot about it half way through. Johnny's journey from being completely broken and on the verge of complete self-destruction to being someone who knows how to love and be loved in return was so much more engaging.

Josh O'Connor is a new sex symbol. His rare and shy smile is irresistible. The film is far beyond LGBT. It is a film about the beauty of the world to the creation, an hymn to life. A film of hope where life trials are overcome, where men forgive themselves and rebuild their faith in future. At end, it is a magnificent tribute to the farmers.

You know, I didn't expect that Call me by your name will be dethroned by this phenomenal and beautiful movie as my top film ! I just watched this yesterday and I felt so hidden inside the vault by not seeing this for almost 5 years . I didn't know that this criminally underrated movie exists. It brought me to places I have never been and made me feel like I was being in love since 19th century. THIS IS NOT ONLY A MERE FILM, THIS IS ALREADY THE WHOLE LIFE!
@Alexavian9 ай бұрын
I saw this and then I watched call me by your name in that order for the first time and really really really don't see why people even remotely accept that movie as good. I rewatched GOC multiple times and could only stomach CMBYN once..I felt the latter had nothing of value to take from it. GOC is so beautiful, it feels like a movie/story written and directed from the soul.

Great ending and cannot get enough the song…

This film is so powerful and I love how Johnny, who's always topped with his hookups, is overpowered by Gheorghe and that act alone causes Johnny to slowly fall in love with the guy. The lone inheriter of his tough as nails, daddy's farm. Johnny goes back to get Gheorghe and he won't take "no" for an answer.

I'm so happy to have seen two breathtaking gay films within weeks of each other: this one and CMBYN. A lot of commenters are finding it necessary to choose one over the other, but the tone of each film is completely different, and they are both stunning in their own way. And the way they fall in love differs greatly. In CMBYN, the seduction is as intellectual as is it physical. There's a lot of dialogue, and it's a beautiful depiction of the meeting of minds. God's Own Country has barely any dialogue, and the way they fall in love is so primal, all in the looks and gestures, while nature pulls them together like magnets. I just adore both films. And the soundtracks, perfect. By far my favourite gay-themed films since Brokeback Mountain. I enjoyed Weekend and Shelter, but these two are just masterpieces.
@asteropea7 жыл бұрын
Really, I don´t know why people just focus on comparing. They are both completely different, yet so full of meaning and beauty. Just enjoy the damn things hahahahaha I LOVED them and just can´t get enough of them. I really don´t even see them as "Gay" movies or just LGTB movies, for me is the story of humans feeling, discovering, loving, caring, enjoying one another. These are masterpieces of what love is all about.

Yes. They are so different. I think CMBYN is a movie such as pool of sunlight flooding in the late afternoon in summer, GOC is a movie like a very powerful ray of sunlight at dawn in winter... Brokeback mountain is like a earthy and fallen leaves smell in late fall. The most meaningful thing to me is that GOC's leading actors, who were poor n lonely n kind of wounded soul, finally saved each other. Anyway i love three of them. It just depends on the taste.

The color imagery in this goes so hard. When they start out, Johnny wears cold colors and Georghe wears his red sweater. Only after Johnny looses him, he accepts Georghe as the one he loves, symbolized by him putting on Georghe's sweater. When Johnny talks with his dad, the blue is back on as he doesn't want to show his love for Georghe yet. When Johnny comes after Georghe, the colors are reversed, Georghe has let go of Johnny, so he's wearing blue. Only after they accept each other are the colors they wear similar.

Yes phenomenal. Josh's acting is superb. It's not easy without dialogue. The best to me are his expressions when he looked at gheorghe after injuring his palm with a rock and when he first offered gheorge his cigarette in front of a fire outdoors. I have watched this film about 20 times. Josh is superb. An exceptional action in his portrayal of emotions. He said some lines casually but i felt the pain beneath those simple words: I wanted to see you. Why did you just leave?

You can watch this movie many times and still feel every feeling like "forbidden" love, being stuck, dealing with illness,, trying to hold it all together while falling apart, using sex and alcohol to forget our unfulfilled mundane existence. I also like the fact that Johnny's sexuality was almost a secondary storyline, people seemed to have more problem with Gheorghe being Romanian, then Johnny being gay, loved that aspect (showing how homosexuality is becoming less "vilified" then it used to be.
