I never found Harper's forays into Irish nationalism convincing - it was barely a decade since the '98 Rebellion, there were participants in it who had managed to escape and were on the French side, and who had some success in enlisting Irish POWs taken from Wellington's army into an "Irish Legion". Such a patriotic Irishman as Harper might be considered a potential defector to the French, especially given that there was a long Irish tradition of fighting for France - the "Wild Geese" and so on.
@stanklepoot5 жыл бұрын
Yes, and both the Sharpe and Hornblower series have movies where that is a main theme. I don't see what's out of the place with Harper, however. Someone who loves his home and isn't happy with the idiots running it, but doesn't run off to join a rebellion, is far from unheard of.
@kaczynskis57215 жыл бұрын
@@stanklepoot Harper seems to me anachronistic, with a 20th century sensibility in an early 19th century character. I am not sure a nationalist Irishman would merely have been unhappy with 'idiots' running his country - the way was open for him to form more radical conclusions than that. Yet he is a talented NCO in an army in which a Catholic Irishman like him does not even have full civil rights, and even later in the century, in the Crimean War, English officers would refer contemptuously to "Irish regiments" and associate them with indiscipline. It is perhaps at a tangent but I am reminded of 'The Mackenzie Break', in which a German U-Boat captain who is a POW asks why his antagonist, an Irishman, is a captain in a British army which has murdered his people for centuries. The Irishman does not actually have a good response - but essentially he is a cynical crime writer and detective, and uninterested in politics. He certainly would not have one of his NCOs bellowing 'God Save Ireland' on the parade ground.
