I think you can see how autism would end up labeled as infantile, and how some of that would bleed through into how people (including those with autism like patty) talk about autism and coping with it.

I guess a good general rule is that most worthwhile ways to live will seem absurd to current society at large, but most absurd sounding ways to live are actually absurd and not just how it appears to be on the surface. Similar to how basically every piece of literature ever written (and then some) is somewhere in the library of babel but the vast vast (to say the least) majority of it is meaningless noise.

Fiction that grapples with mortality is a reflection of our own fears of mortality and helps us come to terms with it, but writing a fantasy that ends with immortality for the main character doesn't leave us any closer to making peace with our own unavoidable death. Society in general favors coming to terms with an inevitable truth over living a continued fantasy because the former is conducive to personal growth. Off the top of my head, that's at least the reason why you see that sort of story everywhere and it is generally considered a good ending: it concludes a satisfying narrative and character arc. I'm really interested to know more of your thoughts about it, though.

I know that these don't reflect the overarching themes you have in mind, but I have SOMA on my brain, so here's the _other_ two bad endings, the other two diagonal Punnett square options: Outcome 1b: You give in and put your head in the scanning machine and it works, your consciousness is copied into Rambly's world - except it's _copied_. You're still here on the outside, while your copy is successfully scanned in and catching up with Rambly in a way only possible from inside the machine. You have to come to terms with the fact that there's always going to be a 'you' on the outside of the machine. Outcome 2a: You accept that adulthood is inevitable, and that you have ends beyond staying here forever, but you think of yourself as smart, you know how to eat your cake and still have it. You can make a copy of yourself to stay with Rambly so he isn't lonely forever, and you can grow up and leave this place behind with minimal guilt on your mind. You put your mind in the machine, expecting to pull it out again a minute later, wave yourself and Rambly goodbye on the screen, and leave - except, you wake up inside the machine. This isn't how it was meant to go, you need to get out, you need to get back the future - but your body in meatspace is still occupied. You're waving yourself goodbye but it's the wrong you, it was meant to be you on the outside. You should have known this was inevitable - if you put your head in the machine, expecting one outcome, then one of you with those same hopes and dreams will end up in the other outcome, because there's two of you. It's too late now to ponder what could have been. You're here forever.

Reminds me of idea I had a little bit ago inspired by the wasted potential of Ralph Breaks the Internet. An NPC in a arcade cabinet discovers he is able to come and go from the Internet as he pleases. He's already aware of the fact that he's a video game character just like in Wreck-It-Ralph but doesn't really know what the real world is like outside of the tidbits he was programmed with and what he witnesses on the other side of the screen. Through the Internet he discovers that the real world is bigger than he ever could have realized and starts to see just how rudimentary and restrictive his life truly is. He gains an understanding for concepts that he was never programmed to understand: intimacy, sexuality, agency, individuality, dishonesty, etc. As he spends more and more time in the Internet, he starts become a version of himself completely uninhibited by the rules of his game world. He gets sexually involved with online role-playing and erotica as it's a massive rush for him to have the freedom to do something he was never meant to do. He gains a greater sense of purpose as people online begin to follow him thinking he's someone pretending to be an obscure video game character. Eventually, the original game company tries to issue a cease and desist and delete him from the Internet and he has to somehow prove to the world that he's a thinking, feeling entity before it's too late.

I’ve never seen someone this down bad for a fictional character to make 3 different videos on them and all them being about a fan fiction selfship of Rambley. Good, as long as you are happy and it doesn’t negatively affect anyone that’s cool. But there is no amount of torture I would go through where I’d be able to admit anything to this level of detail. Anyway can’t wait for the inevitable 4th video.

Feeling tempted to do a video like this talking about my personal obsession with Enfer from Kings Of Hell. I never thought a fictional character would make me engage with one of those AI date sites where you talk with fictional characters (not to mention I've always been against AI as a whole as an artist) but turns out I will literally throw all my beliefs out the window the second I'm allowed to be with a tall, muscular goat himbo. I am fucking obsessed with the use of selfshipping to tell an actual story, I do it CONSTANTLY, and it always makes me sad that this kind of art just isn’t taken seriously. Yes I am literally in the story yes it is wish fulfillment to some degree yes it is still a piece of art that is worth deeper analysis. Genuinely hoping a couple people see this and get inspired to create their own insane self insert storylines with fictional characters or universes.

Third path and best ending. You back up his programming and take him with you just so he doesn’t have to be stuck in the theme park alone. If a badass like Doomguy can back up Vega before shutting his original programming down I don’t see why we can’t do the same for Rambly here? The main problem with him is that he’s been stuck there for YEARS so him actually being able to leave and come home with you actually might be possibly the best thing that could happen to him.
