GOD SIGMA (Episode 1)

Nostradams foretold that the earth would come to an end in 1999. Some unforeseen disaster might occur in 1982 when most of the planets in space would line crosswise. What would the twenty-first century be like after passing through these years ? At the end of the twentieth century, a bunch of young men give up living on the finite earth and fly up to the infinite space. They find a second earth. The second generation born of them are the heroes of this story.

The effects in this show seem doable in reality with practical effects only. Model jets on strings and the strings are on a bicycle wheel, the wheel is on a stick, the stick is mounted to the ground and there's a string connecting a small steering wheel on the mounting bracket to the bicycle wheel that the jets are mounted to. Rearrange the jets for unique flying formations, stick a firecracker on the jets and set different fuse lengths. Set the camera on its side so the kids look for the strings in the wrong place and think "oh wow, is that real?"

Growing up in the UK in the 80s/90s, anime wasn't really a thing yet. This series, I watched it on VHS with Cantonese dubbing (family from Hong Kong). I really wished back then I could've got the toys. They're insanely expensive to get these days

I used to have the toys, way back then. The three robots that could move independently, and then transformed into God Sigma, with the mechanism exactly like in the film. I originally wanted the Voltus one, but my dad couldn't buy it.
