This belief system has a formal name (you need to look this up, and understand it, so that you can address this). I wasn't aware of this until I heard my pastor speak of it: "Moralistic Therapuetic Deism". It has 5 tenets: 1. There is a God, and He wants us to be happy 2). God wants us to be "nice", and "fair" (they quote the Bible). 3. God does not need to be involved in one's life. 4. Good people (the ones who are "nice and fair") go to Heaven. 5. God watches over everybody. Now we as believers KNOW better, but truthfully, (I am 70 years old) I was RAISED this way by honest, but liberal parents. In fact, I went to a large denominational protestiant chuch (Like "Smith Memorial Church", (name not being "smith" of course), and basically we were taught that God makes those decidsions (that is Calvinsim). Get smart about 1) what your friend believes, and how to discuss this with them.
