Gods es un videojuego de 1991 desarrollado por "The Bitmap Brothers", donde el jugador controla a Hercules en su búsqueda para lograr la inmortalidad. El juego fue realizado para las computadoras Amiga y Atari ST y luego porteado a varis plataformas (MS-DOS, Acorn Archimedes, PC98, Mega Drive/Genesis, Super NES).

La versión del video es el port de MS-DOS corriendo sobre el emulador DOSBox y configurado para mostrar los diferentes tipos de video y sonido soportado por el juego.

El "Roland MT-32 y CM-32L/LAPC-I" corren sobre "Munt", un programa que permite la emulación de los sintetizadores MIDI Roland MT-32, CM-32L, CM-64 y LAPC-I, recomendable su descarga.

El CM-32L es una versión simplificada del MT-32, solo trae un control de volumen y ambos sintetizadores son casi iguales con la misma cantidad de instrumentos, una de las diferencias que hay entre ellos es que el CM-32L viene con 33 efectos de sonido extras y que algunos juegos hacían uso de ellos, un ejemplo es la aventura gráfica "Lure of the Temptress" que hacia mayor uso de estos efectos.

@DwDw Maquero Si, investigando un poco el Atari ST usaba un chip Yamaha (YM2149F), la Adlib y Sound Blaster usaban el YM3812 mientras que la consola Mega Drive/Genesis usaba el YM2612, por eso ese sonido tan caracteristico en las musicas, incluso en el mismo video se puede notar que tanto la musica son parecidas en la Adlib y Sound Blaster.

i love the Tandy 1000 configuration, its what i run. Makes you think of what a Master System port would have been like but an expanded color palette because of the SMS. Bu yeah the Tandy 1000 hardware is an old childhood friend of mine. still love it.

This was an awesome video. This game could truly could run on anything at the time. I got to your video listening to the PC Perspective podcast and decided to find a video that showed the difference between CMS, Adlib and Sound Blaster. I didn't even know of this game. But my first PC as a kid was a 286 playing Wolfenstein and Jill of the Jungle. This game is a slower more manly Jill of the Jungle 😁 The Roland was definitely like having EAX at the time.

About the EGA 64 color mode and this game Tltr: Rambo and Ironman Super Off Road don't work on 64 color mode in DOSBox and GODS don't support 64 color mode. I was testing Rambo and Ironman Super Off Road (both games support 64 color mode) to see if I can use/unlock the 64 color mode in emulator (DOSBox) but dont work, only normal 16 color EGA/Tandy, in real hardware is needed a switchable monitor to use this mode, maybe in PCem is possible. I was looking to see if this game support too the 64 color mode and dosn't, but with a VGA video card the palette change if is on EGA mode (02:06), still 16 color but with diferent palette or maybe the game take advantage from VGA and take all 64 color from EGA (I really don't know). The correct 16 color mode to EGA and Tandy video cards is this 03:18, I don't know why with EGA (00:24) the palette is diferent to Tandy, both modes are in 16 color and both have to look the same (03:18).

What is the difference between the first and the second runs? I thought they are both EGA, but colors look different. At first I thought first run was with standard EGA colors, and the second was EGA with custom palette - I believe EGA cards can display 16 colors out of a 64-color palette. But then I can't understand why would the developers create these two options just for EGA cards..

The second run unlock the EGA extended color palette, EGA can only display 16 color but with this mode all 64 colors are used, I'm using a DOS emulator and in the second run, I configured with a VGA video card. I really didn't know about this mode until now, a user (Riccardo Iovenitti) comment that this mode is supported only with some switchable monitors, you can read the comment below. From Wikipedia "Some EGA monitors are switchable, meaning they can be set up to use the full palette even in 200-line modes, often through a mechanical switch. Only a few commercial games were released with support for the extended color palette in 320×200 or 640×200" This reminds me something similar with CGA 16 color mode through composite video.

I remember when I was kid I was impressed by the game Battle Chess (CGA+PC Speaker) because the characters could "talk" (scream), for me that was the "future". I dont think is the same case of Battle Chess but try to look for RealSound (digitized PCM-audio playback on the PC speaker).

@@Humbert21videos Oh yeah, I remember when RealSound came out. My friend got... Crime Wave, I think it was, and I didn't believe him that his PC speaker was talking. I played Battle Chess on my friend's Amiga 1000 in 1985 or 86 maybe. Then I got it, but it was only in CGA for awhile until I finally built a 286 with VGA. Eventually got the CD-ROM version, too. My little brother who was in 5th grade at the time built a LPT DAC out of resistors that he took out of broken electronics, and I didn't even know how he did it, but that worked for some games. Eventually we used it with Star Control II although we did have a few sound cards by then.

Yes, is the only way to get music and sfx at the same time, work better with the CM-32L/LAPC-1 and not the MT-32, the CM-32L/LAPC-1 has 33 sfx and are used in this game.

Not sure why the DOS version didn't use a modplayer for Soundblaster and use the original Amiga MOD track, but I'm not sure if SB 1.0 was capable of multi-channel audio in DAC.

Easily the Sound Blaster could play sfx and music at the same time in game (at least midi files for music) but I think the midi files for this port was made exclusive to work with the Roland CM-32L / LAPC-1(ISA card version), thats why the game has music and sfx only in that mode. Btw the sfx in CM-32L mode are midi too, the CM-32L has 33 sfx for games and this game use that, if you run this game with a MT-32, those sfx will sound like musical instruments (MT-32 lacks those 33 sfx).

Second EGA mode (@ 2:00) seems to unlock EGA 64 colors mode that allowed palette redefinition (like in 350-lines) but supported only on some "switchable" monitors...how did you do that?

These was running in a DOS emulator (DosBox), first EGA was running in a machine with only a EGA video card, the second EGA mode was running in a machine with a VGA video card, maybe is because is not running in a EGA native video card and thats why unlock the 64 mode. I really dont know about this.

Oh good. For now the only known games to support EGA 64 colors in 320x200 mode are Rambo III and Off-Road...you can google to look at the differences. If EGA was really supported by monitors and software many games have look fantastic!

it's still just ega but the display would make it look like more. the downside was that text was nearly unreadable.

In a PC the Tandy sound does not work. At leats because PC is not Tandy and does not have tandy sound chip

El Tandy 1000 tiene el chip Tandy de 3 voces y es el unico en reproducir 3 sonidos por el speaker, creo que he visto en la red sobre un proyecto donde han puesto un chip Tandy en una tarjeta ISA para ser usada en un PC de los viejos y poder usar el speaker con 3 sonidos (como si fuera un Tandy).
