Godzilla (2014) VS Kong Skull Island

You have know idea how long I’ve been waiting for this. Back in 2017 days when you did Kong 2005 and Kong Skull Island you mentioned that you’ll make a video between skull island and Godzilla but for a later day and that day has finally come! I’m watching this as soon as I get home. I know you don’t really like either of these movies but I personally love them, being a huge Godzilla fan as a kid!

I'm not sure how you missed that the soldiers were the bad guys the first time around. Also, Godzilla's director fully explained the decision of how he limited the fights because if he gave everything all at once, it'd be impossible to go bigger after a very short period. So, by doing this, King of the Monsters didn't suffer from, "Is that it? Godzilla did more in the first one. Yikes."

That's actually a lazy filmmaking technique from him. That's your job as an action filmmaker, is to top yourself with the action scenes or the horror scenes when you are making a movie within a particular genre. If he gave less action scenes because he thought he wouldn't be able to top them. Then that just shows that he wasn't qualified for the job. Look at action movies like The Raid 1 and 2. They are FILLED with action scenes. Each one surpasses the other and the movies constantly top themselves. And that's just ONE example. Others include John Wick and The Matrix. Topping yourself is what proves that you are a talented filmmaker. If you can't top yourself then you're not right for the job. So I would say that that is a very poor justification on his part.

Also, people paid extra money to see Godzilla fight other monsters on the biggest and loudest screen possible, yet they didn't get what they wanted. Now I don't hate Godzilla (2014) as much as Eric did, but I still think there could've been more action. Especially with Godzilla. He is the main star of the film, yet the Mutos get more screentime than him, to the point that it's basically their film instead of his. And I should know, because one of the first few times I finished watching the film, all I could remember was listening to the Mutos.

Kong Skull Island is better than Godzilla in my opinion. That's not to say Godzilla is outright terrible, I do like how the monsters are portrayed as world changing cataclysm and how the films really emhpasize the size difference. But Kong had more memorable characters, a more interesting landscape and the Skullcrawlers were more interesting antagonists then the MUTOs. Plus gotta show love for Kong.

Before these two face off on the big screen, Eric's pitting them against each other in this video! I like it. :D Also, I'm rooting for Godzilla to win. I've seen more of him than Kong, so I've taken more of a liking to him, and he just seems more likely to win. And I see everyone rooting for Kong to win, but I don't know why. Godzilla's much more durable, can attack with his teeth, claws, tail, smash his opponents into buildings, and even just step on them as well, PLUS he's got an actual ranged attack and has shown himself to not just be a mindless monster. Kong also does have brains and strength to him and is definitely faster, but that doesn't necessarily put them on even footing. I imagine that, aside from his axe that he'll eventually get, he'll be using the environment against Godzilla, and that's been proven to be very ineffective to him. I personally do think that trailer tried to mislead us by having Godzilla get no actual hits on Kong, and then when we see the movie, we're gonna see Godzilla come out on top. And then Mechagodzilla comes along and then Godzilla and Kong have to team up to take it down. That's just my predictions. (Btw, I'm pretty sure that the reason Gareth Edwards chose to not show much of Godzilla in the 2014 movie was because he was doing the "less is more" technique that was used with Jaws. That's what I heard, anyways. But I agree with you that Godzilla was used far too little in that movie.)

Unpopular opinion: I actually loved Godzilla 2014. I liked how it was more of a “thriller” for the first 3/4 and then there was a great climactic battle at the end. Even though there is not much Godzilla, there is still monster presence throughout the film so it was still entertaining to me. It also focuses more on story and plot rather than being extremely preachy and focusing on politics.

The problem is Godzilla isn't even the main focus of the plot. Rather, it's the Mutos. I mean, they're okay. But they get so much screentime, that it literally becomes their movie. And just to be clear, I give Godzilla (2014) a 5/10. Not a bad movie by any means, but certainly not a great film in my opinion.

Yet another great video! Though, again- I gotta disagree with the final verdict. To me Godzilla 2014 felt like an actual movie with a vision in mind, Kong Skull Island just felt like a prolonged 2 hour action scene with nothing else. Godzilla is far more impressive with the directing and sound design, and to me Godzilla’s lack of screen time is a benefit, since it made his few scenes far more memorable and grand. It’s just that it needed better humans to keep us invested while we waited for the Big G. Just me though, great video and I can’t wait to see your thoughts for Godzilla vs Kong! By the way, what was the music you used in the beginning of the Godzilla and Kong comparison? It was awesome!

Another problem I have with Godzilla (2014) is the lack of humour. It literally takes itself way too seriously. Now I know Godzilla is meant to be a serious film, but that doesn't mean they couldn't have at least added a bit of humour to it. At least Man of Steel had a bit of humour, and that film is lambasted for having absolutely no humour whatsoever, even though that isn't necessarilly true.

I like both these films as a casual and giant monster fan. I like Godzilla 2014 cause it respects the character of Godzilla and doesn’t make a mockery of him, plus the lack of Godzilla screen time while short isn’t too far off from the older Godzilla films. As for Kong Skull Island, I love it cause we see a new version of the tale of King Kong that we’ve heard and seen 2,000,000 times now. And plus I’m a huge fan of the Skull Crawlers. Now even though I like both these movies, I respect your opinion and hope Godzilla vs Kong doesn’t make you hate the Monsterverse

This was yet another awesome video Eric! I loved that it was a Monsterverse Vs. Video! It was incredibly well made! Great work buddy! I personally am ALSO rooting for Godzilla because I have grown up with this character my whole life and have seen all of his incarnations in the previous movies. As far as Godzilla Vs. Kong is concerned, I feel the only movie you should compare it to is Godzilla: King Of The Monsters. It seems like the perfect movie to compare it to. The director (Adam Wingard) stated that large chunks of Godzilla Vs. Kong will NOT be human babble and instead be alot more monster focused than you may think. The reason for this is because Kong is with the humans. Kong is the only Titan that can communicate with a human so in a way, we will be seeing alot of scenes with the humans connecting with Kong like a heart to heart sort of connection. That is going to be awesome! More monster screen time means that we will get ALOT of monster glory and more monster action between not only Godzilla and Kong but Godzilla and the humans, aswell as Kong against whatever he fights in the hollow earth. Hell, Junkie XL stated that the aircraft carrier battle for Godzilla Vs. Kong is around 18 minutes! 18 minutes of them going at eachother! Then the final battle, then Kong in the hollow earth, then Godzilla against the humans as he is depicted as the bad guy and EVEN the "doomsday" of this movie (I won't spoil it) which would provide us with even more entertaining fights! So even if the human story is terrible, at least the movie is redeemed by incredibly long scenes with monster fights! Godzilla Vs. Kong is also reportedly the shortest Monsterverse movie so far (1h 53m) meaning that the amount of human screen time would theoretically be gone and we would focus alot more on the monsters. The biggest reason as to why I believe you should make a Vs. Video between Godzilla Vs. Kong and Godzilla: King Of The Monsters is because Godzilla Vs. Kong seems to so far be the best Monsterverse movie and comparing to Godzilla: King Of The Monsters (your personal favourite Monsterverse movie as well as mine) would really make sense! Godzilla: King Of The Monsters is the movie to also tease Godzilla Vs. Kong aswell. Thats why I believe that this movie you should compare it to, is Godzilla: King Of The Monsters. But it really comes down to your own personal pick. I CAN'T WAIT to see a Vs. Video on Godzilla Vs. Kong regardless of what it is! I look forward to seeing it! Keep up the amazing job Eric! Quite interesting too. Seems Skull Island was learning from Godzilla in 2 ways: both having more a prominent case of social commentary among it's proceedings and making sure there is more going on in terms of world and action. I'd personally say Skull is the best of the 3 monsterverse films so far, since, while indeed not great, it does balance things a lot better than the other two, with Godzilla being too little too late and King of The Monsters being too much course correction in many respects, though I still enjoy it. Also, Sam really took me by surprise in the film. He is really the only reason it gets bumped up a little higher because his anger is drawn in such an understandable place, fighting a war and having lost so much for nothing, and vowing it won't be the same with Kong, going to see it through to the end, dead or alive. Good video.

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. I like and enjoy both of these movie even though they have serious flaws. But I like Kong Skull Island a little bit more. But, Godzilla King of the Monsters outshines them by a lot. Hopefully Godzilla vs. Kong will be the best out of all of them.

Difficult for me to say since I enjoy them both but I would have to pick Kong Skull Island. I just love the whole Skull Island environment and how it felt truly foreign. The crew went the extra mile filming in Hawaii, Vietnam, and Australia and combining them to create Skull Island. I enjoy the characters and understood a majority of their motivation. Plus I love how they didn't repeat the same story with Kong and put a spin on it plus I enjoy the final fight in Skull Island opposed to Godzilla but I really enjoy them both

1. I'm on Team Godzilla 2. I think you should compare Godzilla vs. Kong to King Kong vs. Godzilla from 1962. I think that would make for a fun VS. video since the 1962 movie is where it all started. Also the 1962 movie is the movie that is single handedly made Godzilla a house hold name to many people world wide and without it I don't think Godzilla would be the iconic monster that he is today.

These movies always felt to me like a Kong movie for the sake of a Kong movie and a Godzilla movie for the sake of a Godzilla movie. It's like they made these in order to create the later movies such as King of the monsters and Godzilla vs Kong.

You could do either one of two things with your GvK vs. video: Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) vs. Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) Or Godzilla (2014) vs. Kong: Skull Island (2017) vs. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) vs. Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) I'd prefer the latter option, but ultimately, it's up to you. Now as someone who's been a fan of both of these monsters for most of my life, I am beyond excited for Godzilla vs. Kong. Everyone's seems to be going crazy over the Snyder Cut right now, but I'm still more excited for Godzilla vs. Kong. I'm rooting for Godzilla since he's had two solo movies in this continuity while Kong has only had one. Also, with Godzilla, it was like love at first whereas with Kong, I slowly grew to love him over time. Lastly, I just want to say that as someone who has seen every single Kong and Godzilla film, I've enjoyed this MonsterVerse more than most people do and I consider it to be the second best modern cinematic universe after the MCU. I enjoy all three MonsterVerse films almost equally. I think each film has its own strengths and weaknesses, but they all feel like films that Toho (the studio that produced the all Japanese Godzilla movies) would have made in the 1960s. They all have their own distinct tones and styles, but they all do a good job at giving their monsters subtle personality quirks without anthropomorphizing them too much and providing us with human characters that may not be particularly well-written and compelling, but are still somewhat likable and charismatic due to them being played by extremely talented actors. I am confident that Godzilla vs. Kong will be no different in this regard. Anyways, great video as always Eric!!! Long live the kings.

More is less and less is more. I think the 2014 Godzilla movie was more about how frightening it would be to be a human living in a world where beings like Mutos and Godzilla exist. Jurassic Park has very little of the T Rex if you think about it. It has the paddock breakout sure which is a lengthy scene but after that you only get like three little micro scenes. On the other hand The Lost World Jurassic Park not only has more dinosaurs but twice as many rexes. We even get to see it rampage in San Diego! Is the sequel superior entertainment by virtue of being longer and giving us twice us much rexy action? Idk maybe and maybe not. We barely get to see the Xenomorph in the Ridley Scott Alien movie. Is that a dull drag as well? The shark in Jaws? I'm not sure if there is even a single full body shot. The Predator is literally invisible until the end of the movie. Cloverfield monster? I for one am very confused every time someone says there wasn't enough Godzilla in the 2014 movie. I thought it was perfectly fine. Holding back was a good call because it makes his appearances feel more like an event. Made him feel more mysterious like how in Independence Day you only get a limited view of the saucers, letting our imagination fill in the gaps for their implied size and danger level. An event like brushing your teeth or putting on your socks is not spectacular because you do it everyday. Its a mundane thing. But to a homeless child, a glass of cool lemonade or new socks for Christmas feels like a once in a decade thing. A weak man knows the value of strength. In the case for Godzilla, perhaps we have been spoiled by getting much and so we complain when we supposedly get too little and no instant gratification. We've become junkies for mindless action films and can't stand looking at anything else.
