Mothra is definitely a standout. She’s one of my favorite kaiju in the series. She’s just so different from the rest of the monsters, being herald as a goddess of sorts. Unlike the rest, she’s more consciously aware of the world around her, wanting to protect it, which is simply awesome. Also, her design is just cute! Lol

@pbsstoried clearly. also my Dad was obsessed with everything Kaiju and Godzilla (and I do mean everything) he somehow found a 1970s American knockoff of Godzilla and for some reason watched it, it was terrible. (I was in the room while he had it on) it was an iguana from of the Galapagos Islands, I remember pretty much nothing else except that maybe it was caused by a heat wave? so from warnings about nuclear weapons to warning about climate change???????? I don't remember the connection being very clear and the movie was boring and strange... or maybe I just hate it for the arrogance of trying to out do Japan of their own creation that it represents.

Mothra's pretty significant in a lot of different ways, but for my money, I've always been a Megaguirus fangirl. She's the singular villain of her movie, but she defies all of our expectations for such: Instead of being huge and overwhelming Godzilla, she's half his size. Instead of having beam weapons out the wazoo, she has super speed and a vampiric drain. Instead of being super tough, she's just quick and intelligent enough to know how not to get hit, and how to land her own, far more devastating blows. And yet she's still strong enough to pick Godzilla up and carry him around! Plus, she has the most adorable smile~

What I really like is how Japan is really trying to bring Godzilla back to his roots with their recent projects ever since the States got another (successful) crack at him. *America:* "Godzilla and the kaiju are natural disasters. Forces of nature that symbolize Mother Earth getting back at us. By Godzilla is kind of like an anti-hero." *Japan:* "Godzilla is an eldritch horror being birthed from science. It is a villain that needs to be beaten with human ingenuity."

It also greatly depends on the translation, for example Rodan (row-dan) has been pronounced as Raydon (ray-don) in different English dubs of later movies. So the English names are varied. But she not only used but correctly pronounced Gojira, which is impressive as most people don't when they make a video like this. And yes the original English release of king of the monsters was pretty bad, find yourself a direct translation of the original. It's much better

Forgot about the 2016 Japanese's reboot? Shin Gojira bears the heavy metaphor like the original 1954 but based on the 2011 incident of the nuclear power plant "accident" in the earthquake. This is one of the most important key factors to Godzilla. Many sees Godzilla as an awesome creature, but truly Godzilla represents darker things and a symbol than just an uproaring fan favourite.

@scaper85 жыл бұрын
As a lifelong kaiju fan, very nice video. But I do have to say that I think you were a bit too hard on the 1956 American edit of _Gojira._ The editing that spliced Burr in is surprisingly good in much of the film, though, admittedly, very noticeable in some areas; and the antinuclear message, though watered down from the original, is still very harsh by the standard of almost any American monster movie of the time. All and all, it may be inferior to '54's _Gojira,_ but '56's _Godzilla, King of the Monsters!_ is a very good film in its own right and an excellent companion piece to the original.
@scaper85 жыл бұрын
@Aspiring Marauder I don't know, I think most fans have a pretty good opinion on '56 and it's only getting a better reputation as time goes by and the Legendary MonsterVerse is near universally loved. While "America bad" may have been the default position, I really don't think that's been the case for the last ten to fifteen years now, and that opinion is steadily losing ground.

Yes he even wanted to make it stop motion but the costs were prohibitive so he went for the whole wearing a suit and the rest is history

Her pronunciation of all things Japanese is simply atrocious

Well she isn’t Japanese and probably doesn’t know Japanese so I think we can give her a break since Japanese can be difficult to pronounce.

Nice video on both Godzilla and Mothra, my friend! I really have a fan of Godzilla for 20 years. Formally, my favorite kaiju is King Ghidorah, the three-headed dragon. But not just Godzilla and Mothra, but every kaiju that I love, especially other kaiju in the Monsterverse the most.

Godzilla was my childhood hero. Nothing like having a hero with dangerous breath to come to a little girls rescue.

I gotta agree with you there out of all the monsters in the toho franchise mothra is unquestionably the one I’m _happiest_ to see on screen.

I respect how 99% you got it right, the 1%. Is the comic rage across time, zues didn’t beat him, he did hurt him but he completely drained him self, Godzilla got right back up out of hades threw a volcano and destroyed everything. But other then that you did a amazing job! Props ^_^

Great video!! I love Gojira and Mothra and they are my favourite kaiju’s. It’s interesting though that you mentioned the film’s references to Nagasaki and nuclear bombs but didn’t mention another more recent incident that inspired the movie. Lucky Dragon 5 was a fishing ship which was contaminated by nuclear fallout at bikini atoll in 1954 due to US nuclear testing. This was mere months before the release of the movie Gojira. This incident is even referenced in the movie as the first ship to encounter Gojira is named Lucky dragon.

This was a very touching love letter to kaiju. I loved learning about Mothra and I never considered her social implications before. It makes me look at the character and Godzilla movies in a new light now.

I think there is something so powerful about being able to look at texts in multiple ways: as entertainment, and as something more complex.

Sure, Mothra may be the Queen, but as far as female Kaiju go, I've always had a soft spot for Biollante. I love that they managed to make something as outlandish as a giant Rose/Human/Godzilla hybrid actually badass and tragic at the same time.

There was a Kirby: Right Back At Ya episode on 4KidsTV a while ago that had the same storyline as the original Mothra story. I had no idea it had such important historical, social, and cultural context! And now the storyline of the episode makes soooo much sense! Thanks for another greatly enjoyable and informative episode!

Godzilla is my fav, mainly because He’s not the most powerful or the strongest kaiju, it’s because of his ability to persevere through any obstacle and not back down without a fight, he certainly earned his title as the one true king of the monsters
