I'd like to think that Godzilla at the moment, didn't have his Atomic Breath yet. That's why his scales pop out in Godzilla Minus 1, it's his first time using it. Or that his Atomic Breath wasn't a concentrated beam, and was more more like a spray. So the Atomic Spray also would've left the Rival weakened and deteriorating over the years, and Tiamats spray made it even faster

I envision that Godzilla, prior to losing to the Rival, never thought much of the Great Apes. They were "inferior to his kind" and by extension himself, but not a threat to the Gojira species' reign. And then Godzilla lost his original lair in a humiliating defeat. I like to headcanon that it was this loss that motivated him to never again feel "weak" or ever experience a loss like that again, which put him on a path of self-improvement that would ultimately enable him to become the strongest member of his species, preparing him for the Great Titan War and the invasion by Ghidorah. But Godzilla never got over the Rival, and being denied a final comeuppance must've left a very sour mood. Kong in particular is likely very reminiscent of the Rival to Godzilla given his size and strength, but now the roles are reversed where Godzilla is the larger, older, and more dominant one who overwhelmed the smaller, younger, and weaker Alpha Titan. So in a way, fighting Kong was basically a bit of catharsis for Godzilla, hence why he didn't immediately finish him off and often flexed his superior strength on him. And when Kong brought down the overcharged axe and temporarily floored Godzilla, it reminded him of that humiliating defeat from so long ago and sent him into a pure rage at the thought of ever being humbled by an inferior ape ever again.

I have a theory that The Rival was one of Skar King's generals gone rogue and wanted to have his own throne. Also, "The One Who Ate a Star" would imply that Godzilla didn't always had his Atomic Breath. The loss of this confrontation is what prompted him to constantly evolve and eventuallybecome the most powerful Titan on the planet, starting with eating Hollow Earth energy and gaining the ability to weaponize his atomic energy. That's my best guess as to how a young Godzilla was easily defeated, which would also be a callback to the character's 1954 origin that also imply he didn't had a heat ray until the H-bomb granted his the ability.

Honestly some I feel like the excuse that Godzilla was young doesn’t change the fact he still had some amazing feats for his age. As from what I’m guessing time wise this happened after the Godzilla and Kong wars in which Godzilla trapped Skar king and his army. As it would be weird that he was kicked out of his home and risk being caught by the same titan that kicked him out. Plus we also know that this young Godzilla fought shimo and also fought ghidorah. Basically despite how young Godzilla was, he was still a skilled and capable fighter which also shows how skilled the rival is too. My best guess why Godzilla wanted the rematch is due to him now having a size advantage as Godzilla also dwarfs all the kong & great apes in weight and in height. As in 2014/monarch legacy of monsters he was 351 ft tall and weighed 90 tons which if the rival is similar in size to Kong now the rival would be 337 ft tall and weight (no idea as there is no clear source all is speculation but probably 60-80 ton range). So after kotm he would have gotten a weight of 95 tons and a height of 395 ft. So after gaining some weight and getting much taller he probably thought he stood a better chance. Plus Godzilla then from kotm onwards Godzilla would gain a lot of weight but stay the same height as in GxK and GvK he is 164 tons (even after evolving).

As a Gojira fanguy.... I actually like that Godzilla was humbled in this fight. I can see if Godzilla was a smug teen ( or young adult) thinking he's the top of the power chain, only for him to get home invaded, beat up and kicked out... this would add another layer to his hatred for Kong and his kind. I only wish we could see these battles play out on screen in a movie or series.

Well while the rival might have help but still a good feat nonetheless but it possible that legendary Godzilla also lost not just because he was outnumbered and young but due to this being legendary Godzilla possible first fight with a member of kongs species also legendary Godzilla is a species in the monstersverse and toho better not change that because it breaks canon of the monstersverse plus it make the great Titan war now boring so no legendary Godzilla in a species in the monstersverse

It all makes perfect sense. 1 on 1, theres NO chance any ape titan would beat the same godzilla who battled skars army, or ghidorah. Godzilla was most definitely younger and weaker when he battled the rival. Considering that ape titans do not grow any larger than kongs size, the rival was not especially large or heavy, and godzilla was taking on an ARMY of apes, so 1v1, against a godzilla who had battled armies and wars, the rival would get wiped

Normally I would agree with that... if Godzilla's own narration says that he got jumped by other Kongs alongside the Rival but that's clearly not the case. One Kong did humble him. If we're going for the idea that he was "younger, weaker and inexperienced" (as an excuse) then why are we also saying it's unbelievable for one Kong to beat him. That feels heavily contrived. Either Godzilla's stronger than one Kong or not, make up your minds people! The events of when Godzilla's battles in the past take place are all over so I feel it's unclear. Personally, I like the idea that Godzilla fight Ghidorah and Skar King's army after his lose against the Rival, which would lead him to be more determined to win the battles to come. Until proven otherwise, that's how I'm going to interpret G-Man's past conflicts. I know we like to think Godzilla is the most badass and perfect thing but it's not realistic for him to start off with Ws; he had to lose at least a few times before he became king and there's nothing wrong with that. Not to mention it doesn't make any sense for Godzilla to somehow 1v1 an entire army of apes when he couldn't even take out two Mutos (yeah, he was hibernating for years and was out of shape during 2014 but he still damn near lost). So yeah, my fellow G-fans, it's okay to have Godzilla take an L every once in awhile. No need to get hostile.

This was also the reason why Godzilla would not be defeated by Kong due to his earlier encounter with the Rival. But let's not forget that Skar King is the primary reason why Godzilla hated the Great Apes for starting the Great Titan War. While I do respect the Rival's victory against Godzilla, I would have loved to see a rematch where Godzilla defeats and is forced to kill him when he the Rival refuses to leave.

In my opinion, the reason why The Rival was able to defeat Godzilla, was because Godzilla was exhausted, which “probably” the Rival knew that Godzilla had just won a great battle and after the battle he was at his weakest, and knowing Godzilla was at his weakest, that's when The Rival thought of defeating Godzilla once and for all.

I think the Rival evicted Godzilla before the Titan War, which saw him fighting against Skar King and his army. So, by the time he sealed Skar King and his forces in the Subterranean Realm in the Hollow Earth, Godzilla already had a beef with the Great Apes.

I get the part where Godzilla is younger and not as powerful when the Rival kicked him out, but the part where he didn't use the atomic breath is something I have a another possible explanation for it: he didn't posses that ability yet. In the novel from GvK, it was stated that Godzilla's atomic breath is the result of him acquiring it from an unknown energy residing in the Hollow Earth. So, and this is just my personal theory here, it is possible that Godzilla hasn't discovered this energy at that point where the Rival showed up and handed him his tail on a plater. He only gained it after being kicked out, but probably before locking up Skar King and Shimo down in the Hollow Earth. Again, this is just a possibility with no solid evidence to support it, but it would explain how the Rival was able to defeat the younger Godzilla.
