Something I don't think gets mentioned a lot is how this movie manages to avoid the typical "we used to date but it didn't work out so we hate each other" plotline with Irene and Trapper. It's established that they know each other cause they dated in college and made sure to point out that they broke up because he didn't take anything seriously but that doesn't mean they hate each other, they simply don't work that way, they tried but are better friends. Maybe there was some drama when they broke up but it's refreshing to see a film acknowldge that people can still get along despite their history, they were drawn to each other in the first place so it makes sense they still enjoy each other's company but they just didn't need all that relationship stuff to enjoy it.

something I love as a long-time Godzilla nerd is the purple pink shade Godzilla becomes after his cross-country kaiju hunting trip because for as wild as it is, its kind of a Godzilla reference. in Godzilla 2000 and through a lot of the millennium era Godzilla movies, his spikes did become larger and pointier almost crystalline with a purple hue to their tips. its like... whenever theyre looking for new ways to interact and engage with the monsters theyre keeping core elements there from the sources. they're finding ways to reinterpret and reinvent but keeping core elements for each of them to let you know "this is what sets them apart". Godzilla is a fundamental element, he's a force of nature that cannot and will not be stopped, he is constantly finding new wellsprings of power and using it to show how insignificant we are in the grand scheme. everything that comes against him loses and even a defeat is merely a temporary setback Kong is an animal, plain and simple, he needs enough enrichment and social engagement to be kept happy or he will lash out and a big part of ensuring that he is okay is that human element. at our best humanity has the role of caretaker for the animals around us, we form zoos, we form wildlife preserves, we form organisations to preserve and protect animals. however at our worst we displace animals into worlds they no longer recognise and that are no longer made for them. Kong is a reminder that animals and us share a world together. Mothra is a more spiritual element to the forces of nature. that everything lives even after were gone. yes right now we are the dominant species but hundreds of thousands of years ago so were dinosaurs. the roman empire thought it would last forever, the pyramids were built over 2500 years and we are still closer to the death of cleopatra than she was the completion of the pyramids. because Mothra is in a constant state of death and rebirth (much like a phoenix), she reminds us that all things are temporary and that in a moment we can all at any point die. that if we don't take care of the world the world WILL keep on spinning without us
@leothewhiteranger5 ай бұрын
So I want to add two amazing pieces of context for this movie. First, Mothra. She appears so little because they weren't sure they were even going to GET the rights to use Mothra, and so were covering their bases with a backup monster to fill the same role just in case. And Second, you'd think there might be more opposition to this with Minus One about in the Japanese fanbase right? WRONG. The Japanese fanbase, by and large, seems to adore that they have both a silly Showa era style Godzilla film, and a serious disaster-esque Heisei style Godzilla film so close to one another. To them, it's the two cakes sort of thing.

@dracodracarys23395 ай бұрын
Exactly! Honestly it's a bit annoying hearing people being like "Godzilla was just a brutal psycho in this movie!" because he's smarter than everyone thinks and he's actually a surprisingly merciful leader, he only kills other Titans if he has to and is content with sparing those who aren't threats to the world. He kills Scylla because she's defied him numerous times before and this was the last straw. He kills Tiamat because he needed the energy to fend off an imminent world-ending threat and Tia wasn't sharing. And he attacks Kong because, remember the apes once were his sworn enemies. Then suddenly he senses they've escaped. Then Kong comes to the surface. And Godzilla, with no context, assumes Kong has sided with his fellow apes. So until Mothra cleared everything up, he was just doing his job, and he trusts Mothra enough that if she trusts Kong, then so will he.
@samcooper24745 ай бұрын
@@dracodracarys2339'he kills Tiamat because he needed the energy to fend off an imminent world-ending threat and Tia wasn't sharing' That and, like Scylla, Tiamat has shown in the past that she can't be trusted. Something a lot of people don’t pay attention to in this movie is that almost everyone had an arch, even the monsters. Dr. Andrews learned to respect Jia’s choice whatever it may be. Jia finds that she does belong with Dr. Andrews. Trapper doesn’t have one, but he was great from the moment he was on screen so I didn’t mind. Bernie grew by seeing that recording everything for followers isn’t as important as the lives of others, in this case the Iwi people. Kong learned to become a father to Suko and a leader for his kind. Suko developed by accepting Kong as a father and overcoming his fears of the Skar King’s second in command. Godzilla learned that Kong is not an enemy, but an ally, although Mothra needed to knock some sense into him for that. Lastly, Shimo went from being enslaved for most of her life to finally being freed and making the choice to help Godzilla and Kong defeat her enslaver.

What I love about the Legendary Monsterverse is that they successfully navigate Marvel's success with the first three phases of the MCU, in that most of the movies have a distinct feel to them, but are recognizably in the same universe. Godzilla (2014) had a fairly grim, realistic tone, which Kong: Skull Island mostly followed, while subtly introducing some fantastic elements, which as Lee pointed out has been increasingly leaned into as the franchise has progressed. And that makes a certain narrative sense in that the awakening of the MUTOs and Godzilla's subsequent reappearance after presumed decades of little to no activity essentially kicks off humanity coming to the realization that the world isn't remotely what we thought it was. I am looking forward to whatever comes next and genuinely hope we get to see some more classic Godzilla monsters in the future (particularly curious to see if we ever get a Monsterverse Gigan, who design-wise was always my favorite Godzilla foe). However, even if they never made another movie in this franchise, it has had a fantastic run and my sort of lackluster interest in the film that kicked it off aside, the bulk of the Legendary Monsterverse really has stolen my heart as an old school kaiju fan.

I don't think this has been the best made of the Monsterverse movies, but it is absolutely my favorite. Seeing Godzilla and Kong fight together for that long a period and actually helping each other so much during the fight is one of the best cinematic moments I've ever seen in my life. That alone shows why there are some movies that just need to be seen in theaters to truly experience them.

Thank you for pointing out the visuals and sound design. So underappreciated. My favorite piece is actually when Godzilla and Kong arrive at Hollow Earth. After Shimo gets rid of the flock of Vertiscine and we see Scar, you can hear Godzilla's roar. Scar looks worried and pissed. GxK shoot out of the vortex, and you can hear the bomb whistle before impact. Their entrance together had me rolling with fun laughter in the theater. My kids and i loved this movie!

Goji spent the last two movies hearing voices; there’s the ghidorah alpha call he kept hearing every time they tested mecha godzilla and then the iwi distress signal in this movie. He had no clue what the danger was he just kept hearing threats and either ran to confront them or rushed back and forth to fix smaller problems/help increase his own power because he didn’t know what the warnings were about yet.

What would a Planet of the Apes/Monsterverse crossover look like? (*POTA Apes living in peace and harmony*) Godzilla: (*Unintentionally wrecks the well-camouflaged forest colony, while heading back to Rome for a nap, after putting another titan down*) Kong: (*Totally unaware of what happened, due to partying with his new crew down in Hollow Earth*) End Credits Total runtime: The first 5 minutes of a Monsterverse movie

16:00 people keep calling Godzilla stupid here, but let me lay it out for you: Goji fought Kong before, but because of their bonding over mechagodzilla, tolerated his existence in hollow earth, as long as he stays sown there. Godzilla gets a signal that he knows means The Scar King is back, so he needs to power up FAST. He yoinks some radiation from humans, and consumes a stache that's been building in the ice for millenia, all to prepare for an invasion of Scar King's kind. Next, he hears Kong Roar, not just trespassing on Goji's territory, but actively roaring, which can be read as a confrontation. The only logical conclusion is that Kong has joined Scar King and is attacking the surface, if you know what Goji does. I'm sure his judgement call was also altered by the fact that Goji has already fought a war against Scar King and all the Kings in past, so trusting one that you already have a tumultuous relationship with to NOT choose its own kind, just is not an option in Goji's mind. That, and the power ups he has flowing through him, are more than enough reason to not risk it and just attack.

I was happy that they scrapped the "Kong and Godzilla are afraid" angle the did the the trailer and it's just that Godzilla is pumping himself up for the fight. The only disappointments I had were that, in the zero-G scene, we didn't get a "Godzilla vs Megalon flying drop-kick" or a "Godzilla vs Hedorah atomic breath jet propulsion" moment. Because either of those would have totally worked in that context. That and Tiamat got pretty jobbed. She's a major threat in the Monsterverse comics.

I’m quickly becoming a fan of every character Brian Tyree Henry plays. Did I even remember his character’s name in this movie? Nope. But I loved him. How he voices Jefferson Davis/Morales in the Spiderverse movies? So great. Lemon in Bullet Train? He and Tangerine were my favorite characters and their brotherly relationship made me cry a little. Hell, I even liked him in Eternals (from what little I remember of that very, very long movie). Point is, Brian Tyree Henry is always a win for me

You know why Godzilla chose to go BACK to the colosseum? Sure, it fits nice, and knowing that humans know not to mess with him is nice, but the sands of Giza where they meet the Mediterranean is probably way softer, and the warm sun mixed with the cool waters is definitely a pleasant sensation for a lizard. There's probably way more comfy places than a concrete floor, but he chose to go back to sleep at the colosseum. If you'll recall, last time we saw him choose a nest for sleeping reasons, it was in his old temple, where the ancient humans worshipped him long ago before they were wiped out. That place was also nuked, to give him the power to defeat ghidora. His only home is gone. And here, on the surface, there's a man-made structure with similar architecture, that fits him perfectly when he curls up. The colosseum reminds him of home. He goes back because he misses home.

So, one thing about the sound design and scale, in Hollow Earth, the Titans don't sound like giants. When Kong is fighting the snake, it just sounds like the water is to scale, then it goes to Godzilla and Tiamut, they sound huge, so I think thats a neat detail that with no humans around, the sound doesn't need to so large, because we're following the perspective of Kong, and to him, he's not a giant.

@@JackHobson I don't think that's Minus One being overrated, that's just it not being to your tastes and that's totally okay. Kaiju movies, Godzilla especially, tend to teeter between these big analogous think pieces about the world, with Godzilla famously being a metaphor for nuclear power and it's destructive capabilities, OR being big dumb monster brawlers with dudes in rubber suits. They're both great, just a big divide in a seemingly shallow genre.
