In the realm where titans rise, Godzilla emerges with fiery eyes. From ocean depths, a force untamed, A creature of legend, by fate proclaimed. Scales like armor, a primal sheen, In the city's heart, a colossal scene. Roars that echo through the urban sprawl, Godzilla, the behemoth, towering tall.

This will be the thirtieth, (yes, thirtieth) Godzilla movie. Not counting the animated ones. If you count those, it's three animated series, and three animated movies. This is also the third movie, to tell the story of Godzilla's first appearance. Personally I think it's been way overdone already, and pounded into the ground as far as it will go. I'll still end up watching this one. Why not ? It looks good.

I love how now everytime universal releases a Godzilla movie they're like "he's a hero", and immediately after Toho is like "nah it's not" it's such a great dichotomy because they're almost always phenomenal back to back releases that allow you to see both how much of a saving force or absolute nightmare Godzilla can be

Yep. Big American studio films have corporate people on set with hawk eyes in every single little thing. As an American, being able to see a return to an original Japanese Godzilla and have it be very personal and emotional is a treasure.
@serugolino7867
@serugolino7867 8 ай бұрын
Well that's a bit of a stupid thing to say, since Toho has always had a very hands on approach with Godzilla, maybe except the first film. Studios are not bad and can actually build a lasting legacy, where the studio is the author and not the director. Toho is the creative voice behind Godzilla. The only Japanese Godzilla that Toho probably didn't have much control over was shin godzilla, but that's because it was Hideaki Anno. Similar as to how Disney is seen as the author of most of their animated catalogue or how Ghibli is seen as the author of their non-Miyazaki films.

The way the spines thrust inward when he fires the breath really adds to the feeling of weight behind the blast, even though we never see the beam nor the damage it causes To clear up some confusion, no I do not mean 'outward'. Stunning.Taking Godzilla back to his roots as a metaphor for post war grief, guilt and anxiety in Japan was such a refreshing take on the big guy. They paralleled Godzilla's destruction so well with the main character's story. And the metaphor for grief and anxiety still "bubbling just below the surface" in the final moments was brilliant.

It's called being resourceful. These people are utilizing the commercially available VFX software techs at home, rather than hiring multi-million dollar VFX companies such as Weta, ILM, MPC etc. This is one aspect that's very overlooked but Japan has a very mature VFX industry in the entertainment sector in the region. It may not be the most state-of-the-art quality but it's still good enough to the given average production budget and unlike the average A-list Hollywood production, Japanese or other Asian movie VFX productions tend to be more cost effective in that regard.

@@walkdeep Tl;dr - I disagree about basic storytelling. Found family, PTSD, redemption, and characters finding meaning in life and how to live after trauma are not basic storytelling elements that you would expect to ever see in a Godzilla film of all things. Now, Legendary Godzilla (2014+2021) those were basic storytelling. A WWII AWOL kamikaze pilot (an insanely massive deal for imperial Japan era to desert) dealing with personal PTSD escapes to home and becomes an orphan. Then finds two other orphans from the war to form found family and it becomes his redemption in life. Only after the pain of losing this found family (initially) he finally realizes the weight of how the soldiers that he let die that day felt before their deaths. All of this with Godzilla serving as a parallel catalyst of trauma that keeps him from moving forward from the war. He keeps running away and hides it from both Noriko and his friends until both of these grow and follow him years later until he finally has to face and defeat them both. That's a crazy plotline for what everyone expects from a simple big monster film. Basic storytelling would be the Legendary Godzilla films (2014+2021) where it was literally just, "Oh shit, the titans woke up, now let them fight!" And that's it. Absolutely no one cared for the human plot line lol. Minus Zero is one of the few or really only Godzilla/monster flick stories where the majority of people have been saying that they actually cared about the human plotline for once. That means the storytelling had enough depth for people to become invested. Both positively from film Critics and general audiences alike. It was good enough to be its own separate war/tragedy movie if they really wanted to if you just swapped Godzilla out for something more realistic.
@walkdeep
@walkdeep 9 ай бұрын
@@BboyEasySteps he found 2 orphans so randomly. And they just start living together. So unrealistic. He should realize by the end that him shooting the 10mm didn't make a diff. Nothing barely hurts godzilla. If anything that saved his life. I didn't go in as a godzilla fan so idk how low the bar is for godzilla movies. But the plot felt very predictable. Why would a failed kamikaze pilot with no combat exp be the guy to pilot against godzilla. You'd think japan wants their best retired pilot. Why does he want that random mechanic to fix the plane. Godzilla fight was predictable.

The highest score ever on Rotten Tomatoes. Seeing a movie made isolated from the Hollywood "rules" was so refreshing. A young man, a young woman, and a baby, lost everyone and everything they knew at the end of World War II. Could they somehow build a life from the total destruction that was Japan in late 1945. A thrilling, and engaging movie that contains absolutely no “Bad Guys”. Just a very difficult situation, and then Godzilla shows up. It's a period piece, it's a love story, an anti-war movie, personal conflicts in high stress environmens. Don't worry, there's PLENTY of Godzilla squishing things, and being a major nuisance. A terrific film on every level. I'm so glad I went to a real theater to see it. Each Godzilla movie attempts to improve upon Godzilla's heat ray. Godzilla Minus One does not disappoint. Whether you're a Godzilla fan or not, you WILL like this movie.

This was easily one of the best new movies I've seen in 20 years. It was like Godzilla mixed with saving Private Ryan and Titanic all-in-one ball of perfection. Someone said on Facebook that it was as good as the original Jaws so at 10:30 in the morning I put it on my phone on one of the pirate sites just so I can laugh at the comparison but holy shit. I almost feel like there's no possible way a fucking monster movie could be this good but it was.

What's more refreshing is what can now be done on a low budget. Hollywood has so many rules party because of how much money is invested. These dorsal spines look incredibly aggressive and really fit the overall design and attitude of Godzilla here, the way they come out the same way control rods would come out of a reactor allowing for nuclear fission to resume(and in doing so the atomic breath), a good reminder of the original message Godzilla was meant to carry. This is the best timeline, on one hand you can watch the Legendary movies with the Monsterverse and on the other you can go back to the roots of Godzilla itself and watch some OG Toho content for it.

It was well synchronized as to the formation of the ships and the crew as well and when they all saluted and the camera spanned them all. This is absolutely horrific, and I LOVE IT. The concept of Godzilla alone is frightening, bringing it to this level is so much better than I could’ve imagine because he’s just so big and imposing in this iteration. And his eyes and face being so expressive is honestly even more terrifying lol, like he’s conscious of the destruction he causes and how utterly helpless we are as humans compared to him.

I think it’s very interesting how Minus One got popular (it also appealed to western audiences, which is more rare for Asian movies). Most movies today get popular because of hype, big name actors, and mass marketing. But Minus One got popular in a more retro (and better) way. Its success was mainly due to word of mouth and how people told other people about just how amazing it is. Movies getting success and becoming popular in this fashion isn't as common as it was in the 20th century and stuff. So it's cool how this movie's popularity was spread in this fashion And it proves you don’t need 250 million dollars to make a movie with great visual effects. Congrats on the Oscar, Toho! I also just bought it on digital… just as much of a 10/10 A+ masterpiece as I remember 👌

Then, when my folks heard my brother and I were gonna watch it *and* how great it was... Well, we bought a whole row of seats because it was my friends and our folks, neither Godzilla or Japanese movie fans... And let me tell you, I think it was the best film we saw in 2023. Yep. I found out about it just a couple days before its English release thanks to its historical/WWII-ish setting, having never seen a Godzilla film before. I ended up watching it in theatres four times, something I've never done with any other film. I mean this in a good way, but Godzilla here is "just" what he was originally created to be: A walking natural (or unnatural) disaster. Outside of that it's a wonderful, very human story about trying to rebuild after the horrors of war, about dealing with trauma, and about persevering through that with family and friends. It's about hope, and a belief in humanity and the value of a single life. It's a fantastic period piece, with excellent visuals and real-world-appropriate military vehicles; every named ship in the film (Takao, Yukikaze, Hibiki, Yuukaze, Keyaki, Ikuno, Katashima) was one of the few ships to actually survive the war in reality, which further showcases the love and care put into this. And the fact that a subtitled foreign-language film of all things is being universally praised for its amazingly human and relatable characters speaks volumes about not just the quality of the film and the acting, but also of how so much of what makes us all human, all the same, _isn't_ what we happen to look like or what language we speak. Everyone relates and empathizes because they're simply fellow human beings.

I think one of the best things this movie does is to scale Godzilla down so that its interaction with humans is much more organic. @Nedziller

Its nice to see these visuals acknowledged and being added to the Japanese original.. it establishes that all contribute to the longevity of Godzilla Similarly its always nice to see Toho moments recreated as well… I instantly recognized Godzilla dramatically blasting Ghidorah from off frame being a recreation of Terror of Mechagodzilla In Godzilla vs Kong you see Goji go full “primal” and attack on all fours for the first time ever.. im curious to see the Toho application of this

One of the things I really like that I'm seeing a bit of in this trailer is how even though Godzilla is CG, he still moves like a human wearing a suit. I would imagine they used mocap like they did with Shin Godzilla, but having those very human movements makes him feel more like Godzilla because we're use to to seeing him move like a human in a suit after 50 years of suit movies. It's a specific type of body language that's part of the character.

Its 1/3 of the size of the universes Godzilla when they find him in the 40s. We see them find their "war era" Godzilla. Its tripple the size. Actually if you havnt kept up, the Legacy of Monsters video on youtube shows the monsterverses Godzilla exactly around this time, in great detail. Scales hard with these massive monsters, but -1 would be at around Legedarys navel. @@Us3r739

This film has been getting unanimous praise. I just saw it myself yesterday, and... yeah, it's entirely deserved. This film was genuinely spectacular. One or two tiny gripes but it's easily one of the best Godzilla films ever made.

my only nitpick was "how did he find her in that specific place at that specific time in a giant stampede of people when he only just found out she was in Godzilla's splash zone" but i forgot about it immediately with the atomic breath scene. absolutely breathtaking and haunting. small plot conveniences don't matter when you are invested, on the edge of your seat, truly enjoying a movie.
@DrkStr17
@DrkStr17 8 ай бұрын
@@kaninekodiaki didn't catch that one but that makes sense. The plot convenience I found somewhat irritating was just how incredibly fast the fleet of tug boats were able to get all the cables/ropes attached. Feels like that would've taken at least 24 hours to do, but they did it in minutes lol

I like how this Godzilla is remaining both faithful to the original material and exploring new things like a new beam. It kinda looks like it’s more like a cannon now with the spines popping back in which is cool.

This is the Godzilla I've been waiting for: an entirely new concept while keeping faith to the 1953 "Gojira" original. What makes this one a standout is that it is a character driven drama that weaves some actual historical elements to give it a believabiltiy absent in previous Godzilla films. I was actually drawn to this well-paced story with the monster appearing and disappearing at the right moments--never dominating the screen time while allowing its human characters to flourish. The finale made my youngest son and me weep--something that I've never done in any Godzilla film. Kudos to Toho Studios on the 70th anniversary of what is perhaps the greatest mythological monster in cinematic history...

@@figuregaming3872 Correction: 1954. This was the version before the Americanized version with Raymond Burr from 1956. The restored version of the 1954 film is much better and edits out all the American scenes of 1956. Thank you for pointing out the mis-type...
