I actually love this Godzilla! He got me into the entire Godzilla franchise! I love all the incarnations of Godzilla from the very first, to Final Wars Godzilla, The 1998 alternate version of Godzilla, Godzilla from Godzilla the series, and even funny enough Zilla from Final Wars (Yes American Godzilla from 1998 and the series is a different carnation of Godzilla in another universe, but Zilla is an entirely different creature in the original Godzilla universe).

No they are different creatures. Godzilla 1998 is called Godzilla and stands alone in an alternate universe. Zilla is larger, it was an alien creation, and unlike the 1998 Godzilla, it was intended to be an evil creature.

JackassJunior627 Actually Toho bought this Godzilla and renamed it to Zilla because it was nowhere near the original Godzilla's look. By renaming it they removed the only link between this one and the original.granted Zilla looks bloody awesome but in all honesty it strayed too far from Godzilla's original looks to be classed as him. I'm very glad Toho is deeply involved in the 2014 version and hope that they engage us into liking the franchise all over again. the new design looks very much like the originaly but they've beefed up his appearance to look far more menacing and the revived roar still sends chills down my spine each time I have watched the teaser. I have the feeling this upcoming one will show Godzilla for what he truly is, a force of nature that people won't wanna mess with.

The creature was also never renamed "Zilla", but that name belongs to a separate character, a variant of Godzilla '98. Toho never changed the name to Zilla, the truth is that director Ryuhei Kitamura created a new (parody-mockery) character that he named Zilla, but he certainly did not rename the American Godzilla, and niether was he anything like a spokesman for Toho Co. Ltd. He just did what he wanted with his 2004 Final Wars film. The name change is a well disproven myth. Case closed.

@@gladiator674 That's not true in the slightest. Both the movie and character are permanently trademarked as GODZILLA alone. There is a variant incarnation of the character introduced in Godzilla: Final Wars that was dubbed "Zilla" however, but that does not rename any previous incarnations and much less the original character. This was the same deal as how Kiryu was a variant of Mechagodzilla, or how Mothra Leo was a variant of Mothra, or how Kaizer Ghidorah was a variant of King Ghidorah. In just the same manner, Zilla is a variant of Godzilla '98. None of the new variants replace or renames the older ones.

@Rita Hazen That's called personal preference, and it's going to confuse people who don't know the difference between the two fictional characters of Godzilla '98 and Zilla, and they are two different variants of the same monster design, so to say that Godzilla '98 is Zilla is patently false because they are legally and permanently separate characters. Noting that he does look like Godzilla's basic design of a giant radioactive theropod with plates on his back and that breathes fire. He just looks different from previous incarnations of the character, but that doesn't strip him of his title as Godzilla.
