I saw someone on Twitter point this out, and I think it bears repeating. We would be wise to accept that this remains, and likely always will be a niche fandom, and that casual audiences often are not interested in learning. Not to say that they can't, only to say that if they do, they'll likely become more honest fans. I don't think anybody is saying there are not bad Godzilla movies. Just that there are more than 3. It seems to me that there's an emerging substrate of people who like Minus One, probably Shin and '54, and genuinely aren't interested in exploring the rest of what the franchise has to offer. And to be honest, that logic fails me. I don't understand why you would look at something you like, see that there's more, and think "ah, the rest must suck," rather than "oh, there's more!" I really do feel like people look at a couple clips from the late Showa movies and turn away, which is beyond disappointing. Stating an opinion is one thing, but stating blatant misinformation and puking out bad faith arguments is another. I love the way you put it, we just want honesty and respect. We're not asking that everybody loves the thing that we're passionate about, we just don't want to have our faces spat in.
@thejunecooperative9 ай бұрын
Highly agree. I think all those who love that style are doing themselves a disservice by not trying Godzilla Raids Again, Terror of Mechagodzilla perhaps if they're not entirely allergic to scifi camp (since it's directed by the director of '54), Godzilla 84/85 (whichever year it was), and Godzilla vs Destoroyah. I think all of those have something to offer someone who's a fan of 1954 Goji for one reason or another. I'm sure I could come up with other recommendations if I thought about it like maybe they'd love the Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Godzilla Tokyo SOS movies in the Millennium, or maybe even GMK if they just love the more dark and serious tone. There's seriously so many more films. They could even watch the other early Toho Kaiju films in that era like Mothra which are also fantastic. Gods it's annoying me as someone who loves all of these movies you listed.

@@thejunecooperative 100%. It's amazing how some film bros simply refuse to be challenged by media. Vs. hedorah is a trippy, surreal, compelling experimental piece if you're willing to give it a chance. Vs. Biollante is a heartbreaking tragedy, and it's plain to see if you give it a chance. The eclecticism of the franchise has always been one of it's greatest strengths, and it's saddening to see people reduce it to 3 movies.

I’ve had so many thoughts on these people trying to grift and “ride” on the Godzilla franchise thinking they’re better than us. But everyone has already said their piece so lemme share what I feel. Basically I became a fan since “the dark ages”, beginning in 2004 and for like 10 years we’ve had nothing until 2014 when Legendary brought the franchise back. I was already heavily bullied back in school, and it got worse when I started liking Godzilla. Hell if it weren’t for Godzilla I wouldn’t be the person I am today, not to go into too much. And to this day, I am so grateful for Godzilla having such a pop culture resurgence thanks to Legendary and The Monsterverse. Was everything that came out of this new daikaiju era perfect? No of course not. But at least we have content that we can appreciate and love. And Minus One is the best film of 2023 for me because it felt so personal for me it’s message reached me in such a way that I was crying for a week thinking about it. So when I see these “grifters” coming in here making these videos, they’re telling us “hey you guys are stupid for liking this. And I’m right because I made a KZbin video telling you why you’re wrong”. This gets me so angry whenever these guys are talking to US and trying to deceive their viewers into thinking Godzilla is just a stupid franchise when it’s not. I’ve mentioned so much about how Godzilla should have variety in its films but now it just legit feels like bullying at this point, and I hate how these grifters have such a presence with the viewers who already watch their content on the daily, and now they’re gonna think Godzilla movies suck because some clown told them in a video. And I’m pretty sure you guys are tired of feeling like you’re being talked down to now thanks to these guys. I won’t share any negative thoughts or actions we could do to these guys because at the end of the day, we should prove to these guys why Godzilla works in general, and continue to love how this now 70 year old franchise is continuing strong to this day. Hope you all have a good day, and let’s not feed anymore attention to these clowns. Let’s just enjoy Godzilla because we helped build this community up brick by brick, and I’d be damned if these KZbin commentator/movie essay elitists come in here and say otherwise!

I only really got into Godzilla fairly recently. The Monsterverse started my love for Godzilla, and my love came and went over the years. Especially as an American, where Godzilla isn’t that big. Last year my Godzilla love came back, and I ended up going through all 70 years of Godzilla films for the first time. I ended up enjoying so many of the movies. Both the goofy and weird movies of the later Showa era, and the more serious films of the early Heisei era. (I can’t defend All Monsters Attack though). I started reading Godzilla comics, buying Godzilla toys, interacting with Godzilla fans. I got to finally see why people loved Godzilla so much. I thought Minus One was amazing, and I was so happy when people who aren’t fans were interested in Minus One, and that it was becoming such a big hit. Hoping that maybe this’ll lead to a renaissance for Godzilla in America. But instead we got these annoying people.

Because not every film needs to have a deep meaning or be as dramatic as a Godfather movie, sometimes a Godzilla movie can just be dumb fluff and still be fun to watch. But people behind videos like those will praise Minus One, forgetting everything else that happened from the first film to now, forget other attempts to make Godzilla scary again like 1985, GMK or Shin Godzilla, and act like they’re smarter about the franchise than they actually are.

Nerdstalgic famously steals ideas and content from other creators. They’re shameless about it too, for example there was a video about the Generation X TV movie that hit the algorithm recently (the video is a year old, and then showed up in my recommended feed suddenly last week). Within a day of seeing that, Nerdstalgic did their own video on that, hitting all the same points about the same largely-forgotten and niche movie that no one remembers. Whatever’s popular, they’ll farm it, milk it, and exploit it. Agreed on your points about the lack of research, these guys making these videos just wanna get their numbers up. Once GXK comes out, you’ll see the same thing sadly. Sucks for people who actually love these franchises.

No, no, no, no. I hate these idiots as much as everyone, but this does not justify gatekeeping, NOTHING justify gatekeeping. There's a huge difference between pointing out misinformation surrounding a franchise spread by opportunists (as is what this video is doing), and just arbritrarely deciding that someone is not a "true fan", or doesn't deserve to be a part of the conversation on a franchise. (Which is what gatekeeping actually is.) One is valid, the other is not. Gatekeeping is not valid, gatekeeping will never be valid, it will only serve to prevent the fandom from growing and stopping new people from getting into this franchise.
@ORLY9119 ай бұрын
@@costelinha1867 You really drank the punch on that. It's that attitude that's let these kinds of people propagate their BS in the first place. Im all for more people getting interesting in kaiju, but i am not interested in jerks trying to mold the fandom in their own image and then trying to get a position of authority to kick other people out who liked the thing (ie, look what happened to comics). A month late, but the after coming back from seeing Godzilla x Kong these sort of youtube critiques from Nerdstalgic, Skipper, etc. feel so so cynical. So contrived, as if mocking people for liking a thing. I've been a life-long Godzilla fan, having seen every single Godzilla movie that released in theaters since 1998 at a ripe young age of five years old. And I've been a bullied kid my whole life too, Godzilla being a point of contention used by bullies at school and home alike. From being forced to throw out all my Godzilla toys when I became a teenager in order to 'grow up' by my Stepfather (including custom made plushes that are unrecoverable...) to me internalizing and burying it for a time until I discovered fan-kaiju circles online. My one support group after years of being isolated for liking this character, this franchise. And eventually G14 came out. And I felt like a kid again. The theater clapped when Godzilla used his breath for the first time and there was cheers when he survived and went back to the sea. KOTM...I cried no less than three times in that movie as it spoke to my inner bullied child so deeply and personally that to see it be the punching bag for insecure fans, critics and youtubers wanting to make a quick buck I fell into a deep depression. In Godzilla X Kong... when I went to theaters, Thursday night, I saw entire families there. Dozens of children and people of all ages. Kids **excited** to see Godzilla. Adults talking the franchise. As a bullied kid who was mocked, bullied, and had real trauma inflicted on me for liking this franchise... this was one of the most validating things to see, to see this thing that I love thrive. The fact that kids can love Godzilla and it being accepted and not be the source to bully someone over and something EVERYONE can appreciate and love and enjoy is something that warms my heart. So to go back to Skipper and Nerdstalgic and others of their ilk, all that does is damage that. All their videos do is pander to a cynical mindset that encourages people to mock, deride and gatekeep to stand from above talk down to people for liking the things they derided for quick youtube views. While they might not mean it, and only saying it to pay bills... their tens of thousands of fans will. They'll regurgitate their words like gospel. Spew their critiques as if fact and use it to people in other places who actually like the thing their 'critic senpai' derided. And all that does is make people bury what they love. To bury their emotions as sincerity is the greatest crime imaginable on the internet, and push things back to where they were in the early 2000's where kids would gang up in their cliques to bully and deride a kid who likes some weird thing they don't. But seeing GxK that thursday night and seeing a packed theater full of kids and full of people clapping and having an utter good time was such a emotional antithesis to any video of their ilk. The Monsterverse isn't perfect... neither is Minus One, but we have multiple flavors of a character that both lead directors gush about in unision and the franchise having and gaining more and more mainstream attention, appeal and more than all new fans coming in day by day. For this longtime fan, that is the most validating and magical thing to see.

When I heard him saying "It takes place right before the first film" I was like..... that doesn't sound right? Especially because wasn't the first film supposed to be their first encounter with Godzilla? Like as in, the first time Japan had ever seen him? Maybe not, I'm not very familiar with this franchise to be honest, but if that's the case then wouldn't this be a massive plot hole/continuity error? And even ignoring that, I know for a fact that multiple continuities in Godzilla exist, with a great example being Shin Godzilla flat out ignoring the original movie, or the heisei era ignoring anything that ISN'T the original movie or movies inside it's own continuity.

one thing I noticed is how people beg for x, but complain. so now they're given y, and they still complain that they want x. franchises might be forced into a tightrope act for people that might not even be interested at all, let alone be supported in what they want to do. on the other hand, some franchises still get support despite ruining what was supposed to be great by tacking on things that were irrelevant or just had no reason of existing in the first place. a good part of a community will now have to deal with what a bunch of hecklers wanted, or what the investors wanted for the muns. genuinely difficult to enjoy content these days especially when you barely have the time to enjoy them; I've seen the paleontology community brawl about accuracy where it isn't needed, I've seen the art community tear itself again over some trend, I also hear of people still getting bullied for the things they like and getting their interests compared or some shit. eventually it'll all come back to tribalism as opposed to learning from the past and making something new with that knowledge. it's already suffocating enough to have think i had the same interests with other people when it turns out they had those interests for less-than-stellar reasons, if they even are interested or passionate about it at all.

Sometimes what you hate may not be the subject matter itself, but the people "defending" it. I'm not a gatekeeper nor am I unhappy that liking Godzilla no longer a niche quirky thing. In fact I'm rather glad that my fav atomic lizard is now more mainstream. But what I do hate about bringing in too much new "fans" is that some, although few but is louder, felt like a know-it-all and basically shitting on everything except for the new one that got them into the fanbase in the first place. I guess to a certain extent I agree with the idea of gatekeeping. That is to the extent that they needed to do their research or ask about the subject matter to the community. And ofc to keep out ppl who don't even care about the franchise and only "into it" cuz it's trendy. Yes, you can just casually enjoy Godzilla, or anything without being too invested. But if you don't even care about it in the slightest, yet actively turning potential real fan away from it, then I would prefer it if they got gatekeeped by the community.

What I find interesting is how the context for the original Godzilla vs Kong being a satire is lost to time and you open up a whole new way to look at the movie by researching this and figuring it out. A modern audience not steeped in the context of the time mainly perceives it as a dark parody.
