The problem was that Roland Emmerich didn't want to make a Godzille movie. He wanted to make Independence Day with a giant lizard.
@Batfan10310 жыл бұрын
To be fair, Independence Day was pretty good. This, on the other hand, was more like the Transformers movies: the epic trailers drew in newcomers, and the nostalgia factor got the old-school fans. Both sets would be relatively disappointed.

Jagi Raoh I think it actually STARTED OUT as The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, but to get more people to show up, they decided to call it a Godzilla remake, because more people knew what Godzilla was, and it would attract more U.S. and international audiences, alike. It does meet all the requirements for "Beast," doesn't it? They look similar, if not identical, their actions are nearly identical, they both come up out of the New York harbor and begin attacking New York City, and it even seems to have scenes lifted directly FROM "Beast." Maybe I'm right, maybe not. But it's FAR more likely than the notion that this actually started off in the beginning as a Godzilla remake. There's just no way it could have, considering these things. The only thing really different between Zilla and The Beast is how The Beast is quadripedal, and Zilla's bipedal.

"Some people say that 1998 Godzilla was made to be more realistic" He's supposed to be the representation of the destruction of atomic weaponry that evoked a similarity to level of destruction Hiroshima and Nagasaki faced when the bombs dropped. Of course Godzilla isn't supposed to be "realistic" - in one of the original designs for Godzilla was a monster with a mushroom-like head, intended to invoke imagery of a mushroom cloud after the detonation of a nuclear bomb (the sketch can be seen in the special edition of the "Gojira: The Original Japanese Masterpiece" DVD).

You’d go with all your friends and just laugh." (Not only did he revealed that he really can't stand the character, but the jerk made fun of it) - "We got approached with GODZILLA, and Dean was really in favor. I said, ‘Are you crazy? Have you seen a Godzilla film? How does the monster look? They put a guy in there.' " (Seriously, TriStar, WHY HIM?! Of all the directors out there, THAT was your choice?!) • Devlin: - "We just thought, ‘How do you overcome the cheese factor?’ We talked about it and all we could see was farce. We could see the joke… we couldn’t see the movie." ("We could see the joke..." Zilla '98 was made by people who had no respect and didn't take it seriously...) - "We really didn’t know how to make it properly, and so we passed on it." (And was also made by people who just admitted they had no idea what they were doing) I've said it before and I'll say it again to those who were older than me back in the 90s (because I was just a newborn back in '94) -- HOW THE DID YOU NOT SEE A BAD SIGN WITH THIS??!! HOW DID YOU NOT SAW THIS COMING??!! Even Nostradamus would've saw this coming! These men were TriStar's choice? Congratulations, now I have more reasons to hate those two.

He uses specific clips from a film that he reviews that help to illustrate his narration. In order for him to do that he has to have a copy of the film on disc to extract clips from and put them on his video review so he has to wait until the movie is released on dvd / Blu-ray. That's my guess on why he's not putting out a review so quickly. I could be wrong.

more right* there are definitely major flaws in the 2014 movie. like the entire human cast outside of Brian cranston and the japanese doctor. and cutting away from monsters fights and things. the only REAL problem with 1998 was that it was called Godzilla. was it a masterpiece? no. but it was decent. it just wasnt "Godzilla" and thats where the backlash came from.

I understand eveyone's problems with this movie but I can still enjoy it as a guilty pleasure. I was 6 when i saw it so there's a lot of nostalgia attached. The soundtrack is great, the action is blatant schlock but very entertaining and it has 3 of the voice actors from The Simpsons. Set aside the Jurassic Park inferiority complex and pretend the title is something different and boom, all of a sudden you have a great popcorn movie to enjoy on a rainy day. And lets not forget that this movie was no doubt a gateway for a lot of people to discover the Toho movies- it certainly was for me.
@papershadow7 жыл бұрын
Like James mentioned, the movie works better when compared to "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" than as Godzilla, since the monster resembles that more than the monster it's currently named for, including the fact that it's killable but the issue is more managing to land the kill without taking a dangerous apocalyptic option.

Supposidly they wanted to do a trilogy of Godzilla movies but Roland hated Godzilla, so yeah you have to wonder if he made this movie as bad as possible just so he could get out of doing the sequels
@velociraptor4you32918 жыл бұрын
Roland Emmerich DOESN'T hate Godzilla, he's INDIFFERENT to him. There's a difference between the two: indifferent means that you neither love nor hate something, you just didn't have a big interest in the subject in question.

I loved this movie. I think the only reason anyone really hates it is because it's called "Godzilla" when this lizard bears no resemblance or characteristics of the original Godzilla. The best way to look at this movie it to see it as just a kaiju film rather than a full fledged Godzilla movie.

6:03 I really like that they tried to fix it within the context of the series instead of flat-out ignoring it. I kinda liked that T-rex style Godzilla design (I used to watch the cartoon, never saw the movie). I guess I'll just shame myself by admitting I kinda hoped Godzilla 2014 would take inspiration from that cartoon; little did I know the cartoon was based off a Westernized flop. I guess I'm glad 2014 was more accurate.

I love this, and I love Frank Welker as a voice artist! He's got one huge talent: making very realistic animal and monster noises! As well as giving Zilla and his offspring their roars, he gave Sharptooth from "The Land Before Time" his roar! Frank Welker also gave CUJO (from the movie of the same name) his terrifying barks & growls. He also voiced the maniac monkey from "Monkey Shines" by George Romero and the killer bear from "The Edge."

I've heard from a friend that the animated series about this movie basically made up for it in a way. The Zilla in the cartoon was huge, breathed a green Atomic Breath, and was pretty bulky. Not sure why Zilla in the film was such a wimp and(I don't think) as big as the Zilla in the cartoon. Can someone who's watched the animated series confirm if it's good...ish?
@ThatGuy_122010 жыл бұрын
It sorta made up for it, in a cartoonish way, I guess. I got definitely hooked on it when I was a kid, waiting for it everytime it aired. But then, I was a kid back then; almost every kid would think a nuclear-breathing dinosaur battling other giant monsters is awesome. So it's still subjective~
@FaceUnreality10 жыл бұрын
Well Zilla Jr, Jr being part of his official fan name is more true to the Classic Godzilla while keeping the 1998 movie look. Every episode he fights a different monster, my problem was he actually saw that Worm guy as a father and they had a good relationship, Zilla Jr also needed help fighting every single monster he came across. The human characters practically saved the day every time. Hell in a couple of Episodes there was no Zilla Jr, they go the future finding out he died trying to save the city and the whole focus is the main characters trying to get back so they can fix everything. Like Usagi said its good when you're a kid, but as an adult I wouldn't recommend it. Except for maybe this one time they brought back the original Zilla as some undead cyborg. If I remember it wasn't a bad fight.
@Raptorcloak10 жыл бұрын
It is. In fact, the people who hated this movie say the Zilla in the series deserves the title of Godzilla compared to his father since he feared nothing and acted just like the Toho version.
@saidi797510 жыл бұрын

@ihefan97239 жыл бұрын
"the original design was made around A GUY IN A RUBBER SUIT!" It was made in 1954. Back then there was no such thing as CGI, and stopmotion was incredibly expensive. Rubber Suit-mation back then was incredible and unheard of, and the 1954 film had executed it perfectly. Has it aged well? No, Rubber Suits are bulky and cause their actors to pass out due to heat, and CGI looks significantly better. Heck, entire cups of sweat were drained from suits commonly. As such, CGI was put in the 2014 film instead of a suit. However, Godzilla from 1998 didn't have a revolutionary and original idea. CGI was revolutionized by Jurassic Park, and the CGI in that film was widely regarded as terrible, even back then in 1998 when CGI to that scale was a relatively new concept.

@TheSeptet5 жыл бұрын
My favorite bit of trivia from this movie is this: When the actual Siskel and Ebert reviewed the film on their show, it received two thumbs down and Gene Siskel commented on being spoofed in the film; he said it was "petty" and asked the filmmakers "if you're going to go through the trouble of putting us in a monster movie, why don't you at least take advantage of having the monster either eat or squash us".

It was scraped because TriStar didn't want to approve Jan De Bont the bugdet he requested of 100-120 million dollars(which ended up costing way more than the actual movie). Also Stan Winston had created a design that stayed true to the original look of Godzilla compared to what we got in the final movie.
