Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was both creative artist and scientist. He viewed and practiced science as a participatory endeavor - an evolving dialogue between the human being and nature. He believed the human being needs to develop ever more refined capacities to do justice to the deeper nature of nature. In this talk, Craig Holdrege will present key features of the Goethean approach to science, based on Goethe’s own research, and discuss its relevance for the present and future.
Craig Holdrege is the founder and director of The Nature Institute in Ghent, NY (www.natureinst....

Very interesting! I love the idea of delicate empiricism and experimenting with making ourselves identical with objects in order to truly understand them. "We must follow [nature's] example and become as mobile and malleable as nature herself."

That word 'capacities' is crucial - and the arts, as Craig described, and contrary to the apartheid split between The Sciences and The Arts, are key practices and experiences for developing them. I was fascinated to learn from an Anthroposophical doctor that Goethe had posited that medical students would benefit immeasurably from sculpting bones of the body, especially the vertebrae, in clay, and experimenting with metamorphosis of these forms. Certainly a more delicate and humble approach would grow through interaction with the phenomena of patients.

The idea of meditating on objects in nature to more deeply understand them as a whole is an understanding that is described in some of the most ancient philosophy of India. This practice is fundamentally a way to develop the observer's deeper ability to receive understanding through non - intellectual capacities. In western culture the only approximate term we have for this is intuition. In reality it is fulfilling the deepest need of understanding, the joining of existence in a complete form. This is the path which Dr.Holdredge seems to be encouraging us to consider. In addition, I have read that Goethe himself wished to visit India, doubtless to explore the knowledge there.

This is a fantastic talk. Thanks for sharing. (And just to say, for some reason the link to Craig's website isn't clickable in the video description. Would be nice if it was!)

May we consider the possibility that there is more to a being than its physical bodily nature? Meaning unseen, undetected forces.
