The immediate response when hearing about “Alur Bunyi”, the things that Monic and Boo-boo have discussed and explored over the years within their own roots and capacities are undoubtedly already “berAlur” (a long curvy shape) or “mengAlur” (flowing) with “Bunyi” as being understood as Sound that can be heard and vibrate to some extents, even certain frequencies that we humans are incapable of hearing but only feel. If Monic try to learn and unlearn the power of breathing and vocal composition, in contrast, Boo-boo utilizes the Guitar and other string instruments as his points of departure.
Regardless of Alur Bunyi’s past programs, in many respects, the given name in itself not only reflects our continuing curiosities in search for meanings, values and roles of music through sound explorations, but it also convinced us that it provides a shared platform for everybody with similar passions to express their creativity, interpretation, experimentation and exploration within the mysterious phenomena or the creation of Divine sublimations that we consider Music(al). As a result of technological and economic dominations in today’s world, music today has lost its true purposes, meanings and values. Making music is no longer a response to the surrounding environment and its context; it is mostly a way of making a living (i.e., money), becoming famous, and expressing self-indulgent mundanities atypical of today’s world. Today, hardly anyone perceives music as a mixture of expression, science, and spirituality that define one’s unique characteristics and potential as an individual or identity.
Having just entered the 3rd decade of the 21st century, arguably, almost just about everything “new” in music being composed and produced today are the fruits we bear from the significant achievements of 20th century giants, to name a few, from the Beatles, Walter Spies, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Ravi Shankar to even Nirvana; today appears to still be a progressing state of manifestations of that century. On the other hand (in the context of Indonesia), the values and roles that came out of the traditional (roots) soundscapes of various regions have played significant roles in shaping the cultures around the world, in particular the west, that eventually gave birth to modern & contemporary music as we know today. If we know so little about the significant contributions of music and culture that have enriched all sides of the world, the quest in travelling in a multidimensional time frame is crucial.
We see musical development as a cultural movement that goes beyond national and social boundaries. Together, we are convinced that music is all about integration: sounds and rhythms, spiritual quests and economic motivations, tradition and modernization, local genius and international expertise, as well as individual and institutional development.
