Its encouraging to see that businesses are trying to embrace the electric future. Here in Newcastle we have a cab which is a Model S and I've always wondered how he charges while working. I'm sure that as people (businesses) adopt EVs the business charging infrastructure will expand with them.

I would have preferred if Tesla maintained a commercial-use rate tier for the Supercharger vs. essentially banning them from it. Make it no free charging and 2x non-commercial cost, and they would have a big deterrent from commercial use. On a different note, I personally felt a bit sad when you said in your VLOG video that this discussion was over here. I loved having this content interspersed in your VLOGs as it kept things more interesting imo. I’m not everyone though and you should do what you like, but even though I’m a big Tesla fan, owner, and even president of our local club, your VLOG is the ONLY one I’m subscribed to (though I have occasionally watched others). Much of that is because we get so much more of you that way. Now I’m going through Jasper withdrawals since he wasn’t on the VLOG video either :( lol

I seem to recall that Tesla will install a Supercharger restricted to 50kwh if a business is willing to pay.

Tesla App and Navigation already show the status of Superchargers. Maybe it can be used to book Superchargers for a period of time. As long as you arrive within 5 mins of your alloted time, the Supercharger is booked for you. After 5 mins it can be used by others too ?

Might work, but saying with any reliability when you are going to arrive somewhere in the UK is quite difficult. Also those potentially new to EVs might feel that is a bit complicated, versus just turning up and plugging in.

When we have 4 or 500 mile range in a couple of years it will not matter. I suspect this is part of the plan.
@gillespelletier9161

nowtleft2 it will matter. How long do you think it will take to charge at home? No body will bother with home charger and simply pack for 1 hour or more to fill up the battery.

Not that many people drive 300,400 or 500 miles in a day. (Those that do probably won't want a Tesla). For the occasional long trip, the Supercharger network will work fine and I would envisage the owner would top up somewhere on the return journey so they don't have to charge much more than normal at home. Far bigger problem for those that live in housing without off street parking and the ability to charge at all......

And this post was similarly _'fair enough'_ on all points. Well said. 😀

James should you be worried ? Did you not purchase your Tesla through a company, does this constitute as commercial ownership and use ? Question is what will Tesla specifically constitute as commercial use.
@paulyh4531

On the website it says only applies for cars from 15th DEC so if you already got one and use it as a taxi should be ok , well that's how I read it . even so if using an EV for commercial use and you had to charge it elsewhere and it cost you would claim it back as anyone would(petrol /diesel) via your tax return surely. Good video

Of course it's going to be a problem. Seeing as the EV's owners entire life revolves around re charging..

This is another knee-jerk reaction from Tesla caused by their own lack of foresight. It was never explicitly stated in the beginning that supercharging was only for long distance travel. It was said it is free supercharging, and if you remember, the Tesla cost calculator even factored in the savings from that free electricity. Several companies (such as Tesloop) did the math and formulated a business plan which required the free charging to get the desired ROI. Many private buyers also used the free supercharging as a way to convince themselves or their wife that it was a financially sensible move. Without the free charging, it puts their cost/month over what they planned for. Tesla can change the rules for any car they sell from this point on, but any good lawyer could fight them in court about degrading the lifetime supercharging of any existing Tesla which was purchased with that as a string selling point. Tesla is basically saying that tesloop or anyone wanting to drive for Uber cannot buy a used Tesla and get the unlimited supercharging. Adding a fee for idle charging is also reasonable, even though also questionable for existing owners, because if I bought my car with the understanding that it won’t inconvenience me, and I can stop and eat while my car is supercharging without watching an app and running out to move my car in the middle of my meal. Tesla never mentioned this when they were trying to convert people how convenient their cars are to own. Tesla’s huge mistake was using words like “lifetime, unlimited, forever”. If they just set the policy for each car to expire at a certain date, then they can easily update the policy and eventually all those not covered by the policy will have to agree to the new policy to regain access to the supercharger. If Tesla mist charged a fair rate for supercharging as if Tesla Supercharging was company that must be profitable then it wouldn’t be an issue. You won’t see the Shell station telling a EV taxi to go charge somewhere else.

Wouldn't all of the leased Tesla's out there be affected by the new policy? After all, those are leased vehicles, technically, they are commercial rentals.

I don't quite understand why Tesla is restricting the usage of the Superchargers to non-commercial use. How are they going to check that anyway? It's much more simple to charge (money) the charge (electricity), as they already started to do so for Model 3. Make it just a little bit more expensive than charging at home and all Tesla users will automatically restrict their usage of the Supercharger network as much as they can, which is the purpose, isn't it? I see the Supercharger network as the Rex of a BMW i3. It's always there if you need it, but you're not supposed to use it :)

Pardon the imposition here, but the point needs making for all those decent channels which face de-monetisation: Hi, folks! Check out the *Clifford Rutley* channel. channel. He needs 525 more subscribers within 4 weeks, to avoid being de-monetised by Google. Thanks. Thanks for allowing this comment, James. Too many smaller channels are being de-monetised unfairly by the new KZbin policy.

I thought when you get free supercharging it goes with the owner now. So if you buy another tesla if you had free supercharging, you will have it with your new car.

If I was a fleet buyer of cars it would put me off Tesla. As a P85 private owner I feel that this linked with the obvious reluctance to honour the referral programme will make me look at Jag, BMW etc as my trust in Tesla to stick to its promises is being dented. A sad day.

James, ever thought about whether even you might be affected (if you ever buy a new car - or get a loaner...)? You're doing KZbin commercially, with your Tesla. Anyway, I'm pretty sure this new policy won't live for long.

There is a parallel between the internet provider and charging network providers in terms of “Net Neutrality”. Personally I’m against Net Neutrality as long as there are anti monopoly provisions that allow competition. If Tesla wants to make a network and give special bias to Tesla owners, especially to model S/X owners, that’s their right. If EVGO wanted to offer GM a package discount so that all Chevy Volts and Bolts can charge at a discount, that’s their right. If people don’t like it they can either buy a Bolt or choose another charger brand. But what Tesla is doing now with their superchargers is the same as what caused the Net Neutrality issue with internet providers, which is selling you unlimited and then setting conditions on how you can use that. But we don’t need the government to tell them they can’t do it, we can tell them by the way we spend out cash, and they will conform. Patreon learned the hard way recently with their stupid policy change that lasted about a week and cost them a lot of money, and the government didn’t even need to step in.

what about buying a Tesla as a company car. It would be registered through the company for tax reasons and would be used for company and personal mileage. the car would be seen as being commercial use. not good for all those Reps driving up and down the country with the choice of a diesel or a Tesla they CANNOT super charge I know which they will Now be FORCED to purchase :-(

I'm very disappointed by this new policy. I've rented a Tesla before and I'm doing so again at the end of the month. Are rental cars affected by this ban? I can't imagine that was Tesla's intention, but the policy is very vague and just says "any other commercial activity". I can understand wanting to limit usage by taxis, but this policy is way too broad. If they kill off Tesla rental companies I will be more than a little upset. It's not like any private charging arrangements could possibly cover that kind of use. A charger at a central location is not going to cut it for rentals. And rentals expose a lot of people to Tesla, and allow those who can't afford to buy one, to experience these awesome cars.

As the person using a rented vehicle, I would expect to only have to pay for the electricity used. It's a grey area, of course, but we'll have to wait and see how Tesla adapt their strategy. How are leased car drivers going to be affected, for instance?

You're right to be concerned, James. After all, you are making money from producing and showing videos about EV's. OTOH, most of your Supercharging is incidental to your personal needs, and is not done for commercial purposes. Thanks. All the best for 2018 and beyond.
