Hi John, I still have your Long Distance Casting book from the 80’s, I guess that’s your trusty reel on the front cover! I was given an Abu 484 when I was 16 and I still fish with it, in fact after trying some modern rods I still prefer it as they feel a bit ‘sloppy’ in comparison. As I understand it the 484 was capable of pendulum casts but it has a solid butt section, so I was just hoping you might be able to shed some more light on what effect flex in the butt has and why it is necessary? I only cast off the ground myself, and I like Daiwa as a brand so have been considering a Sandstorm so might just buy one and enter the modern world!

Blimey its John Holden, a name from the past, he was an archer and collaborated with the late Roy Matthews MBE on his arhery book, Archery in Earnest. I can see he is a good caster!

Any good for fishing pedulum type casts from groynes or rocky outcrops where groundcasts wont work due to no ground behind where fishing from?😕

What was the fixed spool reel you put on the rod please? - I ask, as I have the fixed spool version of the rod and am looking for a reel to go with it.

I have two of the 12ft version of that rod and I can confirm that mine makes the same noise as that. A very tough rod and I’ve ever broken an eyelet in ten years of ownership 👍
