J6 assassin Goh Hinogami is a terrifying judoka who takes sadistic glee in reducing his opponents' bones to pulp with devastating single-hit strikes and unique reversal options. 💀 As always a massive thank you to Wireman: twitter.com/WireManFGC and Blessy: twitter.com/BlessyVF for their help on this series. Tomorrow is Jeet Kune Do specialist and renowned handcuffer of lightning, Jacky Bryant! ⚡

I like that you can look at his moves and tell he's a grappler, first, because he's got some ugly ass striking. I don't mean "ugly" in that his animations look bad, I mean "ugly" in that the dude just *swings* for the fences, there's almost no technique. It's also interesting how his personality is the complete antithesis of what you usually see in judoka character's. This guy doesn't give two shits about things like respect and honor, he just wants to fucking hurt you.

That's actually more so a reference to Judo more than his brutish personality. Judo is very bare bones in a real fight; so those dinky attempts at throwing out strikes like he has no technique is because...well judo doesn't really have anything outside of its grabs which are only really useful for the sport. there's literally nothing to judo outside of its grab game and how to safely fall on the ground. This ironically makes it very bad for fighting but fantastic for the average person to learn because it can save your life, not from a mugger, but from a slippery patch of ice or something so you don't break your back. So when Goh blindly swings at you as a Judo practitioner it because without the ability to grab you he's just a punk with nothing else for combat experience. It's like watching taka kick, he's comedically terrible at it because his sport never taught him how to even remotely incorporate them into his style because the rules of his sport don't allow it.

@@Neogears1312 Judo is incredible for real fighting, actually. Its higher grade throws are definitely impractical outside of randori, but the fundamentals are about grabbing your opponent by their clothing (which everyone wears in a real self defense situation) and using your hip, shoulder or ankle to unbalance them while keeping their grip off of your clothing (in a lot of scuffles someone will go for your collar or sleeve, like in Judo). If someone isn't trained in grappling, or in some cases even Judo specifically, and doesn't know how to escape, reverse or roll, getting slammed into a wall or the floor outside of a padded arena or gym is devastating. There's a reason Judo is one of the foundations in most of the world's military and law enforcement combative systems- an o-goshi works, period. Someone who drills the fundamentals and perfects the basic throws has phenomenal self defense against the average assailant. By contrast, trained fighters are much harder to beat with Judo, because trained grapplers are better at escaping throws and rolling, and trained strikers are harder to approach, let alone grab, but someone picking a fight in a bar or mugging you in an alley is unlikely to have that kind of training. Judo becomes pretty complex and flashy with advancement, because it's about outmaneuvering a fellow judoka, but at its core Judo is just very bare bones tossing and is incredibly useful. Boxers learn complex counters and feints to face other boxers and BJJ guys have to learn some insanely intricate techniques to get a leg up on a fellow grappler, but against the majority of the population, a boxer can sock someone out with a one-two and a BJJ guy can dispatch someone with a simple chokehold. Martial arts for self defense is about fundamentals, and Judo's fundamentals are strong.

Goh's changes throughout the games he was in were fascinating, he started off as a very weak character because he lacked damage and combo potential plus he was really slow in 4 Evolution, they made more and more quality of life changes to him that slowly made him one of my 4 best characters, he's definitely my favorite grappler from any fighting game.

Goh has one of the best checks in the game. 66P is a half circular mid that’s safe on block. On counter hit it side turns and leaves you at +9. This makes PK unblockable, that leaves you in back turn stance for a mix up. If your opponent tries to block Goh has a throw from stance that’s inescapable you can combo off of. If they try to duck or move to avoid it you can do a half circular mid from this that leads to a stronger combo. This mix up is avoidable if you duck the PK after 66P… but you can do another and they’re now facing away meaning they absolutely can not avoid a back throw. TLDR; 66P is like one of the best buttons in the game and gives goh a horrifying mix up that usually just ends terribly.

I would say he's actually more for advanced players considering his lack of strings and ability to just whip stuff out. You might have more of a combo game in five but he was still relies very heavily on reads and understanding the system very well. Because of his lack of strings too he's not the best at getting out of pressure.

I agree and was going to say the same. Not to mention unlike what the vid said Goh does require execution. f k+g, p+g is not easy to do.
@blessyvf6312

To be fair Goh has a very simple gameplan. Force nitaku with P,6P, then choose between 6K and Throw. I think people try and bait out whiffs to use their launchers too much when learning the game instead of creating situations with Nitaku. In regards to getting out of pressure, his sabaki options have him pretty much covered. He can sabaki high/mid linear single limb punches and mid kicks/knees. His only barrier execution-wise is his Tsukamigaeishi, but with a little practice it can be pulled off consistently. Goh's reliance on fundamentals makes him a beginner character, as people won't find success if they don't stick to those fundamentals.

Beginner friendly ? Wow! The last thing I read on him (can’t recall where) suggested he was one of the more difficult characters. He struck me as one of those characters that everyone wants to play, but not everyone can learn. I think I was inclined to agree because of how, as this video described, he doesn’t really use an abundance of strings. I think he has a lot of throw options too right? (Been a while since I played). So I’m not one to utilize grappling moves/ characters into my gameplan so maybe that was new to me in that concept

he's hard to master because at high level gameplay you have characters doing mid/low strings with count hit launching qualities and throwing out fully circular mids and lows. Meanwhile goh is over here doing usually single hits. He plays the basics of the game very well but lacks the bs and gimicks to take him over the top like jacky or lau.

I hated the fact he got those cheap starter combos in FS : "46p" ; "4kp" and of course : "3pp" Wayyyyyyyyy to much effenciancy ! Also If Sega is smart they should just give his more brawler style to a Yakusa character like Kiryu (or whatever Yakusa main characters).
