I'm French, been a rugby fan all my life (played in school) and I'm always happy when I see American people discover rugby and enjoy it. There's a video called sth like Rugby rules explained to NFL/American fans that you should definitely watch to enjoy what you see more. Die Hard rugby is a great channel, but then you could also watch extended highlights of great rugby matches, like championships finales etc. The semifinals of the 1999 Rugby World Cup between France and New Zealand for example is a piece of history.

true, but that's too advanced for the Americans at this stage. They still can't comprehend the lack of 12ish pounds of padding, helmet, mouthguard, floss, gatorade, and a lawyer on standby.

@@nzdefrag yeah I might have to agree with that.. great respect for americans who are looking into it.... Meaning no disrespect but the fact that the average American would never concider playing without padding might be seen as weak in rugby playing countries lol

Some basic rules when tackling are: You cannot have contact with your opponents head. You can't tackle someone who doesn't have the ball. If someone passes the ball just before you tackle them then the referee has to decide whether you could have pulled out of the tackle. If your opponent is jumping to catch a ball, you cannot tackle them whilst their feet are in the air.
@athlonen

Rugby has those jukes, which they call them "steps". The video you really want to see for that is called "When Rugby Steppers Humiliated Opponents". Trust me, you will love that one!

Anyone else from the UK remember playing rugby in school during the winter, when the ground was frozen (and covered in frozen tread marks or footprints, etc). It was like diving face first into concrete. Painful, but good fun (I’m 54, so maybe I’m looking at these memories through rose tinted glasses)

I remember and playing on flooded pitches during the wet months. I scored a great 90 yard try one game and the teacher disallowed it as I didn't dive in to the big puddle!😅

I played rugby in the highvelds in SA while in boarding school as a kid. It was never fun. Dislocating frozen fingers on the concrete blocks was a norm and 40 years later my fingers look like skeleton keys as a reminder of those shitty days.

It's great to see you enjoying rugby. You said you don't see too many players juking / side stepping, there's definitely a few good videos out there. Rugby has some fantastic side steppers. As you are learning about rugby I though I would recommend checking out "Rugby 7s" its the same game played on a full sized pitch but each team only has 7 players and its played 7 mins eachway. For a full game 7s would be great for you as it shows all aspects of the game, when it comes to the rucks and mauls (fighting for the ball) you can see what's happening easier and learn as there's less players. I played amateur rugby for 20 years and it's a fantastic game.. you do need alittle disregard for your own health haha.

As far as side-stepping goes, watch any videos of Jonah Lomu. Once you get over how amazing he was - like charging straight into five large French players and breaking through them to score a try - then realize that he was doing it all while suffering from kidney disease. He was only ever operating at about 85% so god knows what he would've been able to do if he'd been fully fit. Sadly, in 2015 he died from a heart attack that was related to his kidney problems. He was 40 years old.

We only had rugby in winter as a kid in South Africa, it was played by 90% of boys. It's a great way to establish your position in the tribe. Everyone has a role to play no matter the size and gets taught to play by a gentleman's code even while you're stomping on backsides clearing the ruck. By the time you're a teenager, you know what position someone plays just by looking at their face; if it's puffy and they have cauliflower ears, they're a forward like me. If they had perms and painted their nails, they were a back. And if they looked like a little lesbian, they were probably a half.

Hey @GoHamm TV so I have watched your journey into Rugby over the past few weeks. I appreciate that its a bit weird in comparison to American Football (Gridiron). So the basics of rugby are actually really simple. If you are on your feet then you can play, as in keep the ball and do what you want with it within the rules, when you are not on your feet you cant play. So when you are tackled and as a result end up not on your feet all you are allowed to do is roll towards your team and push the ball back towards them. Easy Right! You have said on multiple occasions that that cant be legal when people get hit in the head and you are right. There are 2 levels of sanction what that happens the basic level is a yellow card (its a bit like ice hockey where you spend time in the sin bin) so you spend the next 10 minutes sitting on the side-line and your team is down a player. The higher level is when its actually really dangerous to the other player and you get a red card and your game is over (your team are down a man or woman for the rest of the game, check out women's rugby its no less of a contact sport than men's rugby). As an ex player (old fart now) if you relax into the tackle it doesn't hurt too much but' and this is a BIG but' you are doing that for 80 minutes! When I was young I was a bit of a dickhead and I rolled my car, got up walked away and it was less painful than a rugby match. I played pretty much every weekend for 15 years.

RUGBY is the best sport on this planet. Hard hitting no bullshit. I’m so glad your reacting to this sport. I could tell you all the rules of rugby but it would take too long to do that my friend. Just came across your channel so subscribed and not because your whatching rugby. My name is Eamonn and I’m Irish from Ireland 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪☘️☘️☘️. About 95% of us here love this sport. I did play it at one time and it is hard hitting. The biggest team in the world to beat is New Zealand known as the all blacks. BUT Ireland 🇮🇪☘️has beaten them a few times and other big teams too. As we come into the World Cup in 2023 in September and the rugby World Cup takes place in France🇫🇷now Ireland is the number one team to beat in the world. Ireland is number one in the world right now. And Ireland has never won a rugby World Cup but they will this year for sure. And the U.S.A has its own rugby team too that can play in the rugby World Cup. 🇺🇸. You just can’t beat this sport known as Rugby 🏈🏉💪💪💪. Anyway you have a great day buddy. Catch up with you again. iRELAND is going to win the rugby World Cup in 2023. Thats me Eamonn here from Ireland 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪☘️☘️☘️. Up the Irish 🇮🇪🇮🇪☘️☘️✌️✌️. Just messing LOL.👍.

Just FYI - that very first clip where you asked if the guy died - that was a tackle from an Under 14 schoolboy match between Paarl Boys High and Monument High. Those kids are 13/14 years old 😂 Also - the rugby world cup is indeed later this year. The opening match - New Zealand (3 time world champions) vs France (New Zealand's bogey team and the Host Nation for the RWC 2023) is going to be a brilliant game for sure.

When i was at school we had a game called deck. Essentially we had a ball and the goal was to just hold the ball as long as you can while everyone else on the field tried to deck you (tackle you). I remember one kid got folded in half so bad they had to give him injections into his lower back.

I too grew up playing it non stop as a Kiwi... One of my brothers would've been an All Black but got knobbled at the pub in Manurewa... if you know it... it's the pub in the movie... Once were Warriors... I also went to school and played with 2 blokes who were All Blacks... I loved paying footie but I knew when they were superior... back in the 80's too... and funnier story... I went to France after training to be a Chef in Sydney. I'm more qualified than that BTW... So this bloke in France had a bar and he was so into Rugby he had a Rugby Bar in the city... I will track down the city... I was also wearing my All Blacks beanie... as we call them here.. I heard a girls say in french, as I speack french too... she said she hated that name! on my hat The All Blacks. God that was fun! you can't findme here on youtube... I am hidden because it's easier for me... Have a great day. Kia pai tō rā - Have a good day.

It amazes me that NFL is LIFE to so many in the US, yet they no clue that it is fact a product of rugby. In fact football is a way of life to many towns and communities. Most people are absolutely nuts for it. Yet hardly anyone knows that it stems from rugby. Back in the 1800s the British took rugby to North America, and over time it’s changed into what the NFL is now. It’s funny to me how there’s so much passion for football and that it’s life for so many yet they have no clue where their beloved sport comes from.

The only way you're allowed to move the ball ahead of the line of play is by kicking it. Usually it's by a chip kick that punts the ball about 20-30 feet ahead so then your own players can legally (as in 'by the rules') chase after it. If they get a lucky bounce and regain the ball now they're behind the opposition with hopefully a clear run at the try line. Some players have manage to chip the ball over the defensive line and been fast enough to catch it by themselves on the full (without it bouncing on the ground at all) but those guys are like Usain Bolt in rugby jerseys.

Thankfully a lot of the reckless tackles you've been watching over recent videos are now red card offences. There is little mitigation for any head to head contact. You can't lead with a forearm. You must wrap your arms. You must control your opponent's descent safely to the ground. Basically, trying to eliminate the shaking of the brain that leads to CTE / dementia, etc., in later life.

The referee will try to "play the advantage" instead of calling penalty or stopping the play as much as possible. Rugby Union is non stop and it flows so nicely. Enjoy the ride. You should watch some of the older games 70s and 80s thats when rugby was at its best full on tackles fighting the famous 99 call were they fought like fuck plus the best player of all time is a man called Gareth Edwards a ture gaint of the game and a fellow welsh man. Loving your reactions pity you've never played it you would have loved it. Have a look at the six nations

You have a hashtag for rugby league but this is rugby union. There are some very important differences. League doesn't have huge size differences between players like union does. League has some great tackling videos but they don't have many off-ball collisions and contact that are highlights. FIY I was a much better player in club than I was in college. Mostly because I'd gone through a divorce in between those periods and I was able to channel the anger on the pitch.

Ok buddy I’m loving your reactions and I’m a new subscriber also what your watching now and if you watch what I’ve suggested these men have no padding like the NFL does.
