I’m glad you’re enjoying these episodes, this is definitely the peak of DBZ. Gohan was so badass in this episode, the way he destroyed all of the Cell Juniors! But Bryan, you should definitely tell Alex that this form of Gohan is called Super Saiyan 2 and that he’s actually the first person ever to ascend past Super Saiyan and achieve a completely new form. The other Saiyans only got power-ups through training in the Time Chamber but were still in normal SSJ state. All of this isn’t really explained in the anime, at least in this arc. The name „Super Saiyan 2“ is only revealed way later in the last arc of DBZ, so it doesn’t make sense not to tell him already.

this is the proper way of transforming beyond ssj, while vegeta and trunks have this ability to increase muscle mass and ki output it is non linear and wastes useful energy, and goku and gohan demonstrated better gains in just their regular ssj forms anyway but now Gohan also has the ability to add the same power boost plus speed that trunks did with an inferior ssj level of control. Thus goku and gohan are already stronger then ascended sayian trunks just as ssj's alone. Gohan also though can still stack the same power increase on top of that even further with absolutely no speed deficiencies of the form.

To differentiate ssj 2 there is a easy way, SSJ 1 will be yellow hair and it has bang hair on forehead of its users. For SSJ 2 the every bang hair will be spikey and steady, only one will be seen in forehead. And in addition there will be a electricity surrounding its users. Note that sometimes SSJ2 also doesn't always shows electricity when they be in perfected form of ssj2 (meaning no aura surrounded them like goku being in perfected state without aura in ssj1) we can determine them by using the one fleet hair on forehead.

The best part about that whole transformation is something that the Creator mentioned about that scream that Gohan did as he was going super Saiyan basically the echo of that scream reach the afterlife meaning it could be heard in heaven and hfil

Before SSJ2 got its name this is how they named it. SSJ SSJ Grade 2(ascended ssj-think super vegeta) SSJ Grade 3 (ultra ssj-buff trunks state) SSJ Grade 4 (the perfect control state-think goku and gohan) SSJ Grade 5 (SSJ2)
