This original version gave me chill when there was no speech, just gohan’s silence of shock and then all of his anger erupted like a beast’s awaken
@MarineRX1792 жыл бұрын
The Japanese song hit differently if people actually understand the lyrics. It was literally written for Gohan and about this being the day of his destiny, where he must surpass himself, to become the saviour that will stop Cell's evil ways and save the world and the peoples in it. The Japanese speech for 16 was also very emotional...the way he said "Gohan...please protect the nature and the animals that I *loved* (past tense)...I am counting on you".

ngl, one of the reasons I don't like the sub. Credit to Masako, she is clearly a talented voice actor. But hearing an 80 year old female voice scream for Goku doesn't fit for me at all. @@LolwutStevie the monologue makes no sense cause gohan doesn’t need to explain to himself why he needs to let go because the last 3 episodes were explaining just that and 16 literally just explained that same thing to him not a minute before. So glad you showed her this. One thing I think the Japanese version gets right is when to play music and when not to. I like the Falconer score but they tend to go ADD with the music. They fill every second of every episode with music, even changing songs 3 times within 30 seconds at times - to the point that it gets a little overbearing. I like how the original they let scenes be quiet and let the moment sell itself without the help of music. The original version of the SSJ2 Gohan scene is the best example of this..

This scene, 16's speach, and Piccolo's speech are one of the most beautiful scenes in all of dragon ball. "He's just a scared 11 year old boy! He's not a fighter like his father, and I'm not going to sit here and watch this anymore! You want to know what he's thinking right now?! He's wondering why his father is watching him die!" "Its okay Gohan. Let go. Release your anger. I understand your pain. But you must let it go, to protect the earth. Please, protect the earth I loved so much." "16. You loved life.. you gave everything up to save it.. and you were just an android. I let you die.. I can't do that. I won't watch anymore. I feel it slipping.. AND I WON'T WATCH THIS ANYMORE!" The only other scenes I think are equally beautiful coming up in this same arc is Goku saving earth and Gohan using his Kamehameha.

Gotta say I wasn't expecting the reaction to be so mellow but I definitely understand since it's like taking her out of a world she knows already and dropping her in another out of nowhere. Dragon Ball is really one of those series that focuses on nostalgia due to many parts of the series focusing on creating "moments" with a lot of buildup. You get comfortable with the language and music you indulge in for so long it becomes a part of your memory and it is your standard to judge all else by. I feel though she was open-minded and honest about her feelings and I loved your explanation on what it meant to people and how it works differently. It's a different world when someone like me grew up in early 90s America with barely any English dubs out aside from Ocean dubs of only part of the Namek Saga repeating for years so I would have to go to China Town NYC for years to buy poorly subtitled VHS rips of basically 80% of the remaining show, and it was a fight to find each one to get every episode for $5 a pop. We had to work hard to see Dragon Ball back in the day after being teased by the Ocean dub for years. So think how after all the money I borrowed as a kid and all the trips to ride a boat to get to NYC every week just to hope China Town had new bootleggs, only to be letdown often and lucky other times. To sit down and finally witness this moment with Gohan in grainy VHS quality with poor subtitles... It blew my mind and left little 10 year old me in tears. It was the first time I've ever felt any emotion toward a TV show, period, and it forever embedded itself in me. This was about 26 years ago. I'm 35 now and I've never turned away from this series, and it was this moment that made me explore more anime. And out of all the years of grabbing DB bootleggs, the ones with this episode on it were the hardest to find because they sold like wild and were always sold out. Took me about 3 months of trying to finally get a copy and it was the most sold episode ever. There was legit underground hype. I love that you guys did this though and I really appreciate you fulfilling this request. I enjoyed this greatly and send you both love from Staten Island as always. She's going to love the next episode then when they recreate the transformation over again closer to the manga, because they add that unreleased Faulconer track for Gohan which is also fire.

I always thought of the bird as symbolism for Androids 16's soul. He was supposed to be just a machine but showed more humanity than most people have the ability to be... Overcoming his programming to kill Goku instead to defend the earth for the sake of life itself. Getting himself thrown to Gohan knowing it would be his end... Sacrificing himself. The bird...(His soul) flying out of him up to Gohan... turning... and flying away out of this realm which triggers Gohans transformation.

I actually saw the EN ver first, but found the JP ver way more satisfying. Gohan talks and in monologues way less in the JP ver giving it a more serious undertone. The entire sequence is best without words, letting the drawings express the moment. America loves to pour dialogue all over the visuals. Less is More and all it needs is That Scream.

I actually saw the American version first, and much prefer this version. Something I noticed is what Cell says to Gohan achieves the same outcome but for different reasons, as the American version Cell places blame on Gohan; whereas the Japanese version, Cell shows disregard to life by belittling a life form he already killed. Just interesting how they approached the same thing differently

Imo the silence on this scene with just the bird flying and the song in the background make this so much more impactful, cause he don't talk but it's like you understand what he's thinking, then BAM...this is it, he snapped, narrator tells you he ascended, he became what Goku and everyone were all waiting for, and it finish on that, perfect.

Made respect for showing her this version. All the points you hit about the difference between the two versions are why I will always prefer the Japanese version to the North American. # 001 The thing is that the JP version, the Dub, the Kai version and even the TFS version. All of them nailed this scene in their own unique ways. JP with the Silence and the Oozaru roar under Gohan scream. English Dub with Gohan's inner monologue reflecting on his self hatred of feeling useless. Kai's harpsichord (or whatever that instrument is) music that encapsulates Gohan's descent into him snapping Faulcouner's unique melody that encapsulates Gohan's becoming who many of us refers to as a "Gentle Giant". As in Gohan is a Gentle Soul. But his power is that of a fierce unstoppable Giant when awoken from its slumber. While I can see why the JP/original version is well liked. I still prefer Faulconer's theme personally. Gohan's theme is pretty a reminiscent of Goku's theme when he turned Super Saiyan the first time against Frieza. While both Goku and Gohan's themes are different melodies, they do carry that same message of warning when you awaken a sleeping Giant.

It's this tendency with American voice directors where they think that they need to have someone talking at all times, or they the audience will magically lose interest and change the channel. They can't just let the animators tell the story, and feel the need to bash the audience over the head with monologues and character commentary. I just wish they wouldn't treat the audiance like they're stupid and just let the moment breath.

There's another reason why peeps like the Japanese one more. Like myself, it didn't matter which version we saw first. The japanese version was just more awesome, WAAAAY more consistent with itself, and didn't try so hard to kiddy up everything it could to be more marketable to American kid's cartoon network. But how can people watching the first funimation dub tell what is inconsistent? The characters' actions vs the script. None no more blatant than Goku. where they tried to turn him into a superhero when he clearly isn't. It doesn't end with character either. Like the explanation of how fast Instant Transmission is: it's literal teleportation, which is why even those faster than Goku lose track of him whenever he teleports. Or how they tried to make it seem like getting Super Saiyan required a lot of training when it clearly never did. Those who never cared to pay attention and/or totally buy into Goku's "ally to good" non-sense, among things are usually in for a HUGE shock when they finally see the real Goku in Dragon Ball, Kai, and Super. But anyways enjoy the show :)

So I had an uncle record it for me on vhs, in the meantime I would go to Chinatown in the Bronx and buy bootleg 3 episode tapes from the Japanese original (they didn't have any legit DB on sale here yet) and and the movies. This was also an experience as the tapes could be from early cell saga to Kate Majin buu. So eventually I ended up watching the entire series in English, japanese, latin American Spanish and the Spaniard duh. Each with it's own charm.

I really appreciated this! I think that this is one of those scenes that even if you grew up on the American version, it's highly respected. So it was awesome that you took the moment to showcase both!

Everything about this version is better. The unique song for the soundtrack, the oozaru roar behind Gohan’s scream. The best part? Gohan doesn’t even speak. They just leave the scene in his deafening silence.

This version, of ssj2 Gohan first transformation was the best ngl. The English version that TeamFourStar included in DBZA was also really impressive.

After finishing all of Dbz can you guys watch the Dbz Abridged it only goes from the Saiyan saga up to the Cell saga. This part is pretty good in it too. 👍

I watched both English and Mexican Spanish version growing up, and to be honest The Mexican Spanish dub was WAYYYyyy better ( dialogues were more intelligent and Emotional. Also insults were more dramatic) English dialogue sounded like it was made specifically for kids , also Mexican latino version was not censored you could actually see blood & guts instead of burn scuffs and kept truer to the japanese Dialogues and Intros. I do have to give credit to the English version of Vegeta's voice though its on par with the Mexican one

Gohan's lore is great, because he has to be the savior that he never sought to be. And everyone ends up placing in him the hopes that everyone previously placed in Goku

You need to listen to the English version of that song that's playing lol honestly TFS done a wicked job on the English version

The Japanese slipping the Oozaru roar into the explosive transformations you see is always just an amazing addition that I wish the dub would’ve adopted. The silence before Gohan’s exploding really speaks volumes. It’s the literal breaking point of a child who doesn’t like fighting, who’s been through tremendous loss and pain in his young life who doesn’t want to be there who just silently cracks and lets the monster come out and take over. Grew up on the dub but this and maybe a handful of other original scenes are just vastly superior to what I was raised on.

I was wondering if you were gonna show this to her. I'm normally a Falconer Dub fan over everything else but Gohan's SSJ2 Transformation was equally good for me either way. Love it!

You guys really should watch the transformation scene from the DBZ abridged version. sure they do a lot of comedy but they kept the seriousness of the transformation scene. With the sound editing i think its the most epic version.

this would be the scene played right when 16 dies. no more jokes from that moment on. kzbin.info/www/bejne/goiYkGqDqKt_q6M

Love the Japanese version. My favorite version is fan made version where it takes the English dub, uses the Japanese music, removes Gohan’s inner monologue, and leaves the narrator ending which gives me chills.

I love both versions to be honest. I grew up with the japanese version dubbed in my language, but the american version with the narrator at the end makes it so awesome
