People seem to forget that even though Gohan stopped training and got a lot weaker than his super sayain 2 form in the cell games, he's still stronger than all the z fighter except goku and vegeta, he was able to easily beat up Cell who outclassed vegeta and goku at the time, so he had a lot of power to lose while still maintaing enough to be consider one of the strongest on earth. He could still blow piccolo, krillin, tien, and Yamaha( lol ) away.

It's quite spectacular. Gohan's lineage with his Saiyan power is stronger than people give him credit for. Out of all the half blood Saiyans. Gohan was the only one able to ascend to SSJ2. Meaning that Goku's lineage to the Saiyan's power was stronger than Vegeta's. Even though Vegeta is the Saiyan Prince. Goku's prowess and lineage always was from the time he received King Kai's training, always stronger than Vegeta's. Vegeta himself stated that: 'His blood was the key to unlocking the true power of the Saiyan Race.' I think that Vegeta didn't understand the context of 'True Power of the Saiyan race.' the ability to transform into a Giant Ape increasing power Tenfold. Most Saiyans, no matter how powerful can't control this. But Vegeta can. That's Vegeta's lineage and strength. Everything aside from controlling his giant ape form, Goku prowess and lineage as a Saiyan 'Warrior' is stronger than Vegeta's. You can basically see his eyes right before Gohan's transformation. Broly had that.

In Super, Future Trunks is able to go SS2. You have to also take in the fact that trunks is younger than 10 and is able to go SS and he is less like Vegeta other than his cocky and arrogant attitude. Heck in the Cell saga, future trunks was the only one who came close to SS2 except Gohan.

I loved this, not just because the awesome transformation and music. But also the shock of him being the golden fighter and great saiyaman from Videl and his classmates, which was built on goofy filler, but really helped cement how strong Gohan was at this point.
