Anti Gores IB & Yummi Nikki IB - A game where you’re a little girl who visits an Art Mesuem, eventually at some point the lights start to flicker and she ends up in this surreal world made of Abstract Acrylic Paintings, Self-Portraits that over time change, Empty Cathartic peaceful Villages drawn with crayons, & Really interesting ways of implementing Scares & Anxiety. It’s a little ridiculous at times to the point it’s comical because of the side character you eventualky encounter that the creator of the game (there’s onky one person working on it) clearly tried their hardest to make seem like real people but miserably failed. Yume Nikki - A game about a girl who is a Hikikomori (An adolescent who locks themself up as a shut-in), you start the real gameplay off by Falling Asleep in your Bed. You then end up in this abyss of unkown location with multiple doors, each door leads you to a different dream, most of the dreams (and the subject of the game) all revolve mostky around the weird imagination of the weird and what happens when you’re alone iwth it, and Loneliness. One of my personal favourites is the Lonely House that holds a very special Easter Egg, in the house you normally encounter a blond girl with a green dress, she doesn’t speak she merely stares at you, acknowledging you’re existence yet still acts like you’re not there and just stares, there is a 1 in 10 (basically really rare) chance that when you turn off the lights then turn the lights back on, the blond girl will be replaced by a ghost (whose name is Uboa) and the whole world goes black & white.

For anyone wondering, the jingle you hear throughout the game when she crosses the street is called "とりゃんせ" or Toryanse [1:54, 26:17, etc.]. It's a children's nursery rhyme about crossing at a crossroad safely but has the deeper meaning (similar to ring around the rosie or London Bridge in english) of crossing the crossroads of life/death (Purgatory) and moving on; this coincides with the limbo theme of the game as well as the death by vehicle at the crosswalk. At 28:07 onward you also hear a beep reminiscent of an EKG machine. I assume the little girl lived with a neglectful mother (oni mask=demon/evil). The mother was killed and the daughter is comatose in a hospital(which would explain the EKG beep) due to a car crash at the crosswalk while coming back from the shrine . Weeeeell.... now that was a fever dream. Also, I think the "going home" theme is not about passing on, but about literally going "home" from the brink of death. During the sequence with the TV, the announcer talks about a car and truck accident, and the fact the mother died and that the daughter is at the hospital and stuff. So I guess she was between life and death, and was trying to cling to life.

@@konoikurozora5851 I disagree, I think it's more accurate to say that the crying ghost is actually the entity of the shrine trying to get her to come to terms with her mother's death. The mother is wearing an Oni's mask, but never actually physically harms the girl, just getting in her way. So in the eyes of the girl, her moms a demon for leaving her but the mother wasn't actually abusive. There's a lot of hints that she grows up to be suicidal due to this event (both how the little girl gets crushed by her older ones body, how you can see the corpse if you continue to go downstairs once you get to the roof, and in the update the game over is replaced by jumping off the roof as the older girl when you fall into the water), the pianist could be a way of a hobby shared between family becoming tainted due to trauma (as there's an actual piano in her house which was likely the mother's and the little girl has a toy piano, could be a love they shared that's now gone. The elephant with a rider missing a head could easily symbolize the truck driver and his truck and how him becoming decapitated in the crash scarred her. Once again back to the crying ghost, at first she's always in the way of the girl, trying to prevent her from going home, and at the end she brings her back to the shrine to accept the death of her mom, comforting her in her mourning (main counter point to your belief, as the ghost actually comforts her, which wouldn't make sense in the purgatory belief). I don't know what the dog and the jumping flesh represent (best guess is the lost of childish nature due to the event for the jumping flesh, she's not very expressive as an adult which could be a result of the accident, you can hear it in the little she speaks that she sounds monotone, lacking emotions). Then there's also the notes at the end that it's okay to be sad about the accident even if she's alone now, she can finally go to a home and the entity won't stop her. Another thing is that the goldfish says something along the lines of "This isn't your home" to the little girl, and once she's grown up she can speak to her younger self standing at the door of the apartment and tell her the exact same thing, saddening her but making her disappear (moving on from the past).

My take on the plot: It wasn't the mother who died in the car crash, but the girl. The first time anyone plays this game, they would not expect the first death. I believe that the girl was visiting a shrine with her mother, got separated, and tried to "go home". She gets hit by a car because she doesn't wait to cross the street (judging by her height, and her elementary school backpack, I'd say she's about 9-11 years old. Aka young enough to forget to look both ways). The entire game is her spirit trying to return home, in denial that she had died. The other spirts are evil depictions of what she enjoyed in her life. They hunt down stray spirts and "kill" them, looking like mother figures or animals to lure her in. When she makes it home, and sees that she isn't safe from the spirts there, she begins to realize what had happened (though the tv showing the crash). That acid trip is her seeing the spirt world blending with her old life. This is where she confronts her guilt. She goes back to where she died, and sees the truth. The scene of her crying over her body is her final acceptance. The small broken mask being left behind as one of the spirts takes her away into the afterlife for good. Having accepted her death, she has no connection to the real world anymore and has "moved on" such that the other spirts cannot harm her. The woman with the phone is her mother. Her having a phone in her hand, and being shown calling someone during the bridge scene is what made me realize that the girl is the one who died. It's likely that she was either calling someone and neglecting to see that her daughter ran off, or it's a depiction of her calling an ambulance for her daughter. Scenes like the woman at the piano could represent the mother grieving and learning to play the piano as the result of her daughters death, or the daughter admired her mother's piano playing and got the toy because of that. I like to imagine it's the former, as the scene with the woman jumping from the roof could be the daughter sensing her mother's remorse. The very end is then the mother coming to terms with the death of her daughter, and the daughter accepting that she can never go home.

I agree, when I was a kid, I remember having a random dream where I was on a bench in the local forest by some train tracks, everything seemed peaceful, then after a while, I started hearing these choo choo noises, in which a large, very psycodelic train just arrived, the conductor came out, who was a random woman with pink hair and a dice necklace around her neck, she told me to hop on, so I went and did cuz I felt like that would be the best option, while I was on the train, pretty much everyone on their had some kind of abnormality (like horns, wings, tails, clothing, heck, some of them were just straight up pokemon or animals), and they were all like "wow, what is with that kid?" I was very confused about the whole situation, but oddly, I went with it, I remember the rest of the dream just being a really wacky and strange train ride, in which I woke up at some point, that is what I believed is to be the strangest dream my mind ever made. (also, I based one of my characters named Maya off of the conductor! :D)

I think I watched a gameplay of a previous version of the game when it was not finished yet. The final part about the bridge is really pretty and what follows is eerie and interesting. I was genuinely shocked and had my mouth open wide thinking "WOW, is this still the same game??" Okay, here's my- quite lengthy- two cents on the overall plot: The girl in kimono is in fact the elder girl in skirt with phone. This whole thing is bout her unable to move on from her grief since childhood after how she got her family of 3 (shown in 9:11 where there's only 3 chairs at dining table) killed in a car crash The evil spirits signify her playful desire of not wanting to go home when she was young (y'know, kids). It is symbolized by how they hindered her journey, having her start all over & over again as she finds her way. The skipping red thing symbolizes her temptation to distract herself from crying by playing outdoors & pretending to be okay (thus the only thing that can be 'killed' ever since triggerring the note at 12:09, stating she will "always try to smile like I'm happy"), dog was prolly kids liking animals, elephant & the man represent toys...the piano spirit may be a portrayal of her mother's talent (explained later in this comment). While stalker girl in white dress shows represents biggest temptation to run away from all grief (why she's first encountered in playground at 3:06). The manhole acting as a teleport portal may have represented creative imagination that only children would have. While the falling lady (4:45) depicts a side of her not wanting to stay at a house that no longer feels home, also the impulse to jump off & end her life that lasted until adulthood (thus killing her off whenever her younger self was reaching near). But now, what she really wants deep inside, was just to find her way back home Another evidence that both kimono girl & short haired lady are the same person is at 7:15- her adult self being unable to move on, still stuck & chasing after her younger self who's always been searching for 'home' The girl may have been scared of her mother, as the latter was depicted as a demon (9:02), but growing up she may have understood that though her mother was strict, she was never a harm & would still allow her some leisure (opening door for the girl to go outdoors at 15:35). The toy piano & room, which are still bright even though other parts of the house became dark, may have been her safest emotional refuge at home. Yet perhaps for some reason, the toy piano may also represent her longing to her family, where one of her family members- assumed is the mother- may have been a skillful pianist as her home owns a real piano (8:51) Eventually the girl crosses a red bridge, then to a hollow-faced lady on phone, faced with several ghosts. Red bridges in Japan are symbol of intellect, transformation, as well as rejection to attachment on wordly things. This may meant that a phone call is slowly helping her to let go of her past through her grief (represented by injuries & hollowness on her face) as well as longing for her mother (represented by toy piano). After a few stumbles caused by childhood temptations (ghosts knocking her off-course) & having to start over repeatedly, she came to 'kill' the need to pretend to be okay (24:35), then finally managed to reach/return to the shrine where the accident occurred Okame mask which represents good luck & a positive figure in Japan may also depict that the girl finds 'home' in her family. Broken mask (26:21) symbolizes the latter's passing & that her 'home' is destroyed (also in 12:39 when the goldfish says "this is not your home"). Girl coming to terms got over her grief & stopped wanting to run away- a representation by stalker girl in white disappearing (26:44), managed to prevent herself from jumping off (26:53) The end scene shows that the girl was able to move on, now back to reality as an adult, accepted the fact of her family's passing. She is no longer lost & is able to find a home to return to again Edit: Rewatched & realized girl ain't cause of accident but a victim, & that white dress at near end ain't her mother but the stalker ghost girl. However I still can't make out what that drawing at 8:42 means, although the painting is a portrayal similar to 25:47 when I assume she's starting to move on

This is very interesting theory and I really agree with you. But there's one thing you missed I think. At around 27:10 when she come down from stair and if she go to her home door, the little girl will be standing there and the older girl will say "This is not your home anymore" to her. (You can see this in the easter egg video of this youtuber, and I don't understand Japanese I am just based on what other people commented about this interaction). But if the adult girl said "This isn't your home anymore" to the kid girl, it kind of change the theory of grief since it kinda implies the adult girl and child girl aren't the same entity.

This game is very memeable and the graphics can be kind of wonky, but this game has what so many professional polished games lack - heart. There’s something so unique in the music, in the aesthetic, in the way all these elements come together than you just can’t replicate and copy paste into another game. A really cool game. I felt so sorry for that little girl trying her best to get home, pointing the way even if she defied gravity to do it. So many deaths with such a great atmosphere & a lot of actually pretty scenery. I liked the additions made to the game. They made it a much more complete experience with the other enemies & the amazing elephant. I actually wish it was longer. Wonderful job!

It's really surrealist and artsy fartsy for a horror game. Even if it's a short experience with little gameplay, you can tell a lot of love went into it. The music's great too.

I couldn't help but love the theories of getting over grief being the theme. But I thought of another one, what if the crash didn't kill her but left her face horribly disfigured ? So her mom had to keep her home in fear of people's judgement on her. It would make sense why all the faces are abstract in the game and why at the end she was able to leave the house as an adult 🤔 but that's just another theory

I agree with Banana Tim with how the mom probably died in the crash, but maybe there was a sort of father figure? I haven't exactly figured out what the elephant and the decapitated man are about, so that could be something... It could also be something more metaphorical. Someone else talked about how the mask shown could represent the girl having to suppress her emotions, but when her mom passed the mask broke and she had to come to terms with the accident.

There was a family of 4. The mother, the father and one sister died in a car crash. The surviving sister grew with guilt in her heart. She was haunted by the past wherever she went. Even her home doesn't feel like home without her family. One day, she decided to end it all by jumping off the roof. She was saved by a phone call. In the end, the girl made peace with her family's death. She has a home, even if no one is waiting for her there anymore. That's my current interpretation of the story.

the song at the beginning of the game is actually a childrens song called Tooryanse (通りゃんせ) that is usually sung while playing a game. It's also sometimes used as a song for crosswalks in Japan to show when it's safe to cross the street and if you look into the lyrics of the song and into the childrens game it kinda gives a nice little extra to the atmosphere of this game here :D
