I am one of those coffee snobs, but it got to the point where I am such a danger to myself and others making morning coffee that it was better for everyone involved that I got a bean-to-cup espresso maker. True coffee snobs will turn their nose up at me, suggesting I can't "Dial it in" properly, but I want my espresso quick, I want it easy, and I want it right away in the morning. Not 45 minutes after I ground the coffee, distributed the grounds, flattened the mound, tamped the coffee, and then finally put the thing in the machine. God help you if you want a Cappucino...

I'm reminded of the "paperclip factory" thought experiment, an automated factory that tries to maximize it's paperclip output, to the detriment of all other things. At some point it will run out of things or matter to turn into paperclips, so it recycles existing paperclips - becoming a kind of closed assembly loop, whereby the outputs are the same as the inputs. Isolated from everything else, just recycling stuff into stuff for eternity.

Guess on the surface level, it's a ritual that lost its significance or spiritual meaning as the process became more modern, repeatable, consistent and less personal. Like the commercialization of religious symbols, mass produced and sold without that connection. Or maybe how the things that used to be seen as unknown are now understood and able to be manipulated for a more mundane outcome.

As a religious person that hit deep...
@JooJingleTHISISLEGIT4 ай бұрын
it's interesting you also got religious vibes from this. a lot of these symbols look like they represent the constant production of heresy. fruit being a symbol of consequences for our works, the bird symbolizing spirituality, the seeds are lies being planted, etc. etc. interesting the horse has no human face, where most of the other things do have one. maybe the faces represent human beings, and the horse is some other thing, processing them into a culture made of trash. well i'm not looking to fully break down what i see here, that'd be a lot of effort interpreting something that probably doesn't mean what i see it could mean, but it's cool how so much lines up with that idea.

@GrumpyForestHag That & the singing ghost horse poops at the end. They only spit out the elephant head but otherwise were still around. Maybe they're what the factory is shipping out as a product? I'm starting to think this game exists only to make people say things they never thought they would.
@casanovafunkenstein5090Ай бұрын

I honestly believe that what we're seeing here isn't a factory. It's a life cycle. _Every_ living thing we see here loops back around to be recreated, continuing its own kind in a cyclic process of metamorphosis. The elephant and the buffalo make food for the bird, and then the bird and the elephant combine to lay the purple face fruit, which spits out dogs which spit out frogs which make nuts which combine with the bird's head and the face fruit to make _another bird._ At the same time, the nuts grow into carrots which turn into buffalo, and also - after going through the digestive tract of the horse - turn into another elephant. _All_ of it is cyclical, all of it repeats itself, and will do so eternally. The only outside forces are the horse and you, the player. What it reminds me of more than anything is a parasite - many parasites go through similarly complex life cycles, their bodies taking on myriad forms across multiple different hosts, many changing simply so that they can be passed on to the next one. And lo and behold, the parasite requires your and the horse's care to keep existing. Hosts, to keep it fed with energy so it can transmute itself and continue its multi-stage existence. I've never seen a game quite like this, where, rather than existing for you, the world of the game exists _because_ of you, and actively leeches off of you in order to continue and thrive.

The little drone guy that picks up the elephant head near the end made me think of Declan Lee's illustrations in the book Magic Night by Isobelle Carmody. Surreal little creature. (Took me like 8 hours to find the name of the book as I only vaguely remembered it from my childhood)

It does seem like this whole place is made to just produce kettleheaded birds and waste (in the form of living, singing, garbage bags filled with horse poop...)

You should be very worried when a game can't even get Manly to make up a cheery video title for it.

Manly sounds tired. It wouldn't hurt him to rest more.

I can't help but feel like this is less a horror game and more like someone turning a dream they had into an interactive sequence of animations? Or they're just trying too hard to make it creepy.

At first I was like: Is this how Tool dreams up their music videos? But then I was all: Na, I'm done once the ethereal ghost horse started playing catch with it's poo. I just... not today. Not this guy. But more power to the creator, and kudos for Manly for being able to continue.

imagine you're playing this game and one of your parents walking in on you during the part where you have to collect ghost horse turds, HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THAT?

I do like how you see how resourceful the factory is. How the waste is reused to do the process again and again.

This factory is what overly complicated Minecraft Mod recipes feel like

From what I take the factory has 2 end products, birds with weird elephant tea kettle heads and lions made from crushed carrot tops

The things made with crushed carrot heads are then dessicated and fed to the bird.
