I worked for an automotive company making carbon parts, we would use a large plastic bag that was basically a tube, and we closed both ends with the gum tape. It saves you lots of tape and decreases the chance of leaks. Love the build!
@carbonfiber8071Ай бұрын
That works great, you just have to smooth the back of the mold, so it won't puncture the bag.

Good job with this new part! Looks like you are getting more comfortable using the materials. I’ll try to answer your big question about the print through. When you infuse thin skin laminates you should use the green infusion mesh and not the red. The red has bigger spaces in the mesh and the green mesh is finer. The red will flow faster because of the wider mesh. When you post cure thin parts with the resin still wet or before full cure, the little blocks of resin in the mesh are shrinking at a different rate than the carbon with the resin in it and it affects the surface quality. One big help is try the green mesh. It will infuse slower so make sure the pot life on the resin will be long enough for a full infusion. I always recommend my customers do a flat sample test for every new laminate and resin used so they can see how fast and far the resin will reach during an infusion. Second is try to let the part cure between 120F- 130F, let it cool completely, remove the bag, mesh and peelply, put back in the mold and post cure. There are a few more options but those two should get you going.

A tip when doing the infusion, you should always let the resin enter the bottom of the part and pull the vacuum from the top. This will help reduce air bubbles that you may get in the resin. Air like to rise, not go downhill. Also I didn't see you using any breather/bleeder cloth? As for the surface finish I don't know but you may try using 2 layers of peel ply? That may help?
@brentwiebke9795Ай бұрын

Rule of thumb for epoxy, every 10 degrees Celsius above room temp you cut your cure time in half. You have an awesome oven so I would use it to your advantage. 24 hour cure time sucks.

@brentwiebke9795Ай бұрын
If you warm up your resin it will flow better and eliminate some of the surface imperfections, also your doing it right by post curing the part on the tool, as you near the material TG it is good to have it fully supported or it could deflect. If you need stiffness you can always use some core, since your using using RTM I’d go with a close cell foam. Another option is you could combine processes as your shapes become More complex, doing this in your oven even at 80-100 f will help with resin flow, good luck and keep up the good work

Dont take this as me trying to say i know better because i for sure do not. However if i was to be doing this being the bedsides are so large and have alot of different curves and such. I would start on the front fenders being they follow suit with bedsides but are half the size. then if you mess up its less wasted 2-1 basically just a thought same general shapes just smaller panels. just gives you a chance to work out all the curves and if it turns out good thats awesome and just a little more practice for all the curves and such otherwise so far im loving the direction you are taking the build. Cant wait to see the end result!

@carbonfiber8071Ай бұрын
Get some plastic to top your wood table with so it won't grab the fabric. You can use masking tape around a spot when you repair gelcoat, so you don't get it where you don't want it. You can also tape the spiral wrap to the back of the infusion mesh to keep it where you want it. I use duct tape, there's not much grip on the mesh. I use sign plastic (solid not corrugated) to make flanges on plugs, when making multi-piece molds. You can make templates to cut it by with cardboard. I make a bed of beeswax on the surface of the plug, to set the edge in, then clean up the inside edge so there's a sharp corner and no beeswax before making that part of the mold. No resin gets to the backside then. Make the flanges strong enough not to distort when you make your mold. I like more fasteners around the perimeter of multi-piece molds than less, and I keep them assembled for storage. Check your vacuum pressure when you make the part, it can be too much sometimes, and the fabric pattern comes through more. You can also spray resin in the mold before making the part, so it has a thicker outside layer. Looks good, just make sure your parts are thick enough, the weight difference in another layer or two isn't much penalty for the extra strength. Think about a light impact, even someone leaning on it, ruining your bedside. More layers of carbon or even a core sandwiched in. AJ Hartman has some good videos if I haven't mentioned him before. Looking good though, keep it up.
@ag_trucksАй бұрын
Wow, that's a lot of great info! Really appreciate all the tips👍 taping the spiral is a pain😂 for my quarters I'm going to do Just that for my flanges and I'm thinking of adding another layer of carbon for strength. Thanks again, much appreciated

No such thing as too much vacuum with resin infusion. The point is to not have air in your laminate.
@carbonfiber8071Ай бұрын
@@MattDodd-j1x All you need is to pull the material into the corners and crevices of a mold. You feed from the bottom and pull air from the top. The air is being pulled from one end and as long as the resin feed has no air in it, it's fine. How many resin infusion parts have you made?
@MattDodd-j1xАй бұрын

The print through is due to the amount of vacuum youre maintaining. You can actually have too much vacuum, I typically shoot for 20-24 which maintains a slick surface layer of resin
