Going For Some Northern Cool

Recently, we left Bonaire to visit friends in St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada. The beauty above and below the sea was amazing. Come along with us, in this short video, and discover diving at some higher latitudes. See northern lobster in their natural, clean habitat. The undersea colors might surprise you. The skies cleared just before hurricane Dorian came through and left us with a beautiful experience.

Same question as Dean - were you diving with a dry suit? The visibility wasn't too bad. A nice change of pace. It's the first Nova Scotia dive video I've ever watched!

I know you won’t believe this but I dove with a 3 mm where with overlap the chest had 6 mm. I had 5 mm gloves and hat. I did not dive more than 20 ft and the water was around 60F . On one dive I dropped to 50 ft and it was about 50 F. That was way too much and I came out shaking. I learned to dive in New England but it was an eye opener since I have not done it in a while. The Gulf Stream actually warms up Nova Scotia so it is not as cold as you might think.

@@ADiversLife Wow - surprisingly warm for that far north. Those lobster were something else - not like the shy ones we see in California!

@@bobherrick4927 You probably know this, but the gulf stream is responsible for the warmer temperatures in Nova Scotia as the current is part of the global conveyor belt caused by the salinity of the water. The big concern is melting of glaciers in the north (say Greenland) will poor excessive fresh water into the gulf stream and slow or stop it causing a huge change in the northern climate. The lobster are definitely not shy. LOL Cargill, in Bonaire, collects sea salt from evaporated sea water in large "pans." When they release water from the pans it creates a 2-3 knot current blowing down the wall due to the heavier, dense highly salinated water. We were caught in it once and it drove us down the wall. The force is incredible. Parts of the gulf stream run at 6 knots and involves much more water. This warms the northern hemisphere. As you point out the amazing thing is experiencing the warmer water in Nova Scotia.

Do you recall what the water temperature was? A friend once commented after a dive here in BC that the temp made it hard to tell between an Angus and an Agnes 🤣
