This is a video on how I switched from oxy/acetylene to oxy/propane on my setup

Oxy/propane cuts just as cleanly as oxy/aceteleyne. Can't blame the cut on propane.

To add for anyone else reading this, concrete can explode when heated up to cutting torch temps, ESPECIALLY wet concrete. It's not fun.
@jeffreyyoung68852 жыл бұрын
I know I have done it when I was a youngster, I had a flair that I wanted to put out and l pushed hard on the concrete floor in my dad's garage and it exploded, it was a very violent explosion, not good!!!

acetylene burns hotter but propane kicks out more BTUs per pound. I cut with a plasma cutter so I will be using a gas cutter to heat and bend. So I'm going with propane cuz I already have a 100 pound propane tank and propane is cheaper.

Oxy propane is the shiznit. Much cheaper and cuts everything you need. I have oxy/propane tips that will cut from 1/4” all the way up to 6” and I’ll never be cutting anything over an inch or so. But I got them just in case. Oxygen and propane is dirt cheap and you don’t have to worry about the 1/7 rule like you do with acetylene.
@N4ANE3 жыл бұрын
Yep I have used this set up with the same propane bottle (have swapped out several oxygen) and that tank is almost empty

Good video other than the bad cut and I don't recommend cutting galvanized, idk what the pipe was but judging by the yellow/white oxides, thats burnt zinc. I appreciate the information though!
@bob142195 жыл бұрын
galvanized pipe is a bad thing to cut with a torch- it can make you really sick with flu like .....propane and acetylene need different pressure settings - propane needs more oxygen pressure

Natural Gas or Propylene is the way to go. Natural Gas is available almost everywhere and burns almost the same as Propylene. (Don’t go trying to plug into the house manifold). That’s my disclaimer 🤓 I can show you how to use a Natural Gas / Propylene torch in a way that would pin your ears back! Seriously from a guy who has welded for 29 years think SAFETY!!! If it’s not clean metal use a respirator. That pipe has been coated, the fumes will make your nuts shrink up and fall off. Second. Move the Truck! All it takes is a spark to get into a wire harness or anything flammable and you’ll have a serious problem on your hands. Keep posting videos.

@@Jordan-rb28 whats the cigarette going to do? youre actively trying to light the tiny little stream of gas thats pointed away from you... i imagine you could crank the valves wide open and spray it in your face with the cigarette lit and you wouldnt be able to light it.. i just spent 20 minutes struggling to propane to even light on a acetylene tip have to flick a lighter infront of it 10 times with just the perfect amount of propane coming out and at just the right distance from the tip if the flow was ever so slightly too high or i didnt have the lighter at the right point it wouldnt light.. this stuff does not want to burn or explode we have to get it in ideal circumstances for it to light up
@Jordan-rb282 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewBrowner because it's needless when a simple magnesium lighter is far safer and costs about the same amount as a cig lighter. Watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGPEnoJmiZipobM The reason your cuts are bad is that you're oxy/prop preheat flame is too weak, and you likely don't have the pressres set properly or the tip you are using. Consult Smith's chart for pressures on the oxy/propane tip you are using and set your regulator accordingly. Then watch thevid I linked up and see how to set up your preheat flame. It should roar a bit, wheras you are setting it up like an acetylene flame. Finally, hold the oxy/propane tip further from the steel, around 1/2 to 3/4 inch or so. It will preheat faster than the acetylene flame. Using a 1/4" tip on 1/4" material I can start a cut on a cold 1/4" steel plate in about 2-3 seconds, cut at a speed of an inch every 2-3 seconds, and the finish cut has no dross or corner rounding. It literally looks like a high quality plasma cut.

Can you use the acetylene regulator tubes torch and arrestor on the propane cylinder? In other words is all you have to change the brazing/heating and cutting tips?
@rkelly12124 жыл бұрын
There is a huge difference when cutting. I never had blow back with acetelyne but God I have blow back with propane. Propane burns at the melting point of steel. Acetelyne burns way hotter. Way easier to cut steel
@N4ANE4 жыл бұрын
You must be using a small tip never had that problem
@HavanaWoody Жыл бұрын
It is not the fuel that cuts the steel, its the oxygen. The ignition temperature of steel is 1,500f less than the melting point. Acetylene is effectively "sharper" than Propane But Propane has more energy by volume.
@BullProspecting2 жыл бұрын
You also have to switch out your hoses because in less than a year the propane will dry rot your hoses and can become very dangerous.

@N4ANE6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the tip needs to be cleaned or your settings is wrong what pressures are you using
@obfuscated30906 жыл бұрын
Hop over to serious welding forums. KZbin is not a serious welding forum. Your settings will be different and lighting is different than acetylene. Abruptly opening your oxygen valve will tend to blow out your flame.
@simonkimberly69564 жыл бұрын
Ob Fuscated yeah. Sometimes if you really torque the oxy valve it takes more force open. This has caused me to open it abruptly and kill the flame.
@AndrewBrowner2 жыл бұрын
thats the downside to propane its a little miserable to use, but if you only pick the torches up once a month then its fine.. you need to be ginger as can be on the valves, and jump back and forth valve to valve with like 1/64 turns.. acetylene you can crack the fuel open light it up and crank you oxygen in all at once, propane you have to light a tiny flame add a tiny bit of oxy a tiny bit of fuel back and forth and back and forth working up to the required flame

im in eastern canada pretty sure i pay like 80-100$ for each tank and theyre size 15/16 around 100cuft, propane is 1/4 of the cost of acetylene and the acetylene is 2/3 the cost of running O/A.. so youre cutting the cost in half to run propane, not to mention you only need the oxy tank not the acetylene on lease

Agree. Only reason to go propane is cost. Acetylene is way better flame and easier to use. I fill #4 acetylenes for like $55 dollars and dont go through them that much anyway... Maybe if your doing a lot of cutting scrapping things or something, but as a normal weld shop, use the acetylene.
