How to Handle Oxygen-Acetylene 'Popping' - Kevin Caron

Excellent video. One other thought "popped" into my head: (for rosebuds and also for welding tips). They come in different sizes for a reason. If you are using too large a tip, and try to run it low to reduce heat, the gas in the head is moving so slowly that the flame can move up into the head, which will make it pop. Us the smallest tip that will provide the heat you need, and keep the gas flow to near maximum. Then, if you still need more heat, use the next bigger tip. That keeps the passages in the tips cooler, and the pops will become rarer. Kevin, love your videos, keep up the good work !!

The most common cause for a welding or heating head popping is overheating due to running insufficient fuel flow. You CANNOT reduce gas flow to get a smaller flame. If you need less heat, use a smaller tip/head. See how the end of Kevin's rosebud is black? That is a tell-tale sign it is running too hot. Always use the manufacturers recommended pressures, preferably on the high end. When you fire it up, adjust the acetylene-only flame just until the smoke disappears, then open the oxygen and adjust to the desired flame (neutral, reducing, oxidizing). Here's a little tidbit that most users of oxy-acetylene don't know: acetylene cylinders are only capable of delivering a limited amount of gas flow. A compressed gas cylinder can empty itself in seconds, but that is not the case with acetylene. The industry standard limit is 1/7th of the cylinder capacity per hour. Kevin is running an AC4 cylinder in this video, which is rated for up to 145cu-ft of acetylene, but individual cylinders vary. Some hold less than that. The actual amount filled in any given cylinder is on the red tag attached to the cylinder. Assuming your cylinder is filled to 145cu-ft, that means the max withdrawl rate is 145/7 or 20.7 cubic feet per hour. That ain't much - the biggest Victor welding tip you can run is a #5, and the biggest heating head is a #4. If you run a #6 or bigger tip or heating head, you risk drawing acetone out of the cylinder, but you also risk the cylinder pressure falling to a point where it can no longer support the flow you are asking of it. This will cause the tip to overheat just as if you dialed back the acetylene flow. If you have a big acetylene heating tip that you want to keep using, you have 3 options: Get a bigger acetylene cylinder, manifold multiple cylinders, or run the tip on propane or propylene. The biggest AC-type cylinder is an AC5, which holds 350cu-ft, giving you a max of 50CFH. That will let you safely run a #6 tip or heating head. If you go to a Prest-O-Lite W-line cylinder (if they're available in your area) you can get a WTL, which holds 390cu-ft and is good for 55.7CFH, which will run a #7 welding tip or a #6 heating tip. You can run a #8 heating tip, but only at the middle of it's allowable range. If you want to go bigger, you go to the second option, which is to manifold multiple acetylene cylinders. This is expensive, both because you have to buy more cylinders and because the proper, UL listed manifolding is expensive. You can NOT just scab something together to manifold acetylene! The tubes and passages must be a below a certain size to prevent explosive decomposition of the acetylene, and you cannot use copper or yellow metals with more than a certain percentage of copper in them in contact with acetylene. The third option is to run the tip on propane or propylene. Contrary to what many think, an acetylene tip will run perfectly fine AND perfectly safely on alternative fuels like propane, propylene, methane/natural gas, and even hydrogen. The reverse, however, is not the case. You cannot run an alt-fuel tip on acetylene or hydrogen. It will overheat and backfire or flashback. Assuming your acetylene regulator is a CGA510-type (male threads on the regulator, female threads on the cylinder), it will thread right in to a propane or propylene cylinder. You can even use a standard BBQ cylinder, although it may eventually get too cold to sustain pressure after prolonged operation. You just need to keep an eye on your cylinder and delivery pressure gauges and make sure the latter doesn't drop below your set point. The other thing you need is a grade "T" hose set. Supposedly, propane and propylene will slowly attack grade "R" and "RM" hose, although I have used it a great deal on both gasses with no issues. Still, I'm going to toe the official line and say "Get the proper hose!". Lighting it takes a bit of practice if you are used to acetylene; if you open the fuel valve too much the flame will detach from the tip and blow out as soon as you try adding oxygen. If the flame detaches, dial back the fuel flow until it re-attaches to the tip, then open the oxygen to get a neutral flame. If the flame detaches while adding oxygen, dial both the oxy and fuel back until the flame re-attaches. Once you get an attached, stable neutral flame, incrementally add fuel and oxygen until you find the max flow your tip can handle before the flame detaches, and dial it back just a bit to keep the flame attached. The BTU output will be about 20-25% less than acetylene, and most of the heat is in the secondary flame vs close to the primary flame with acetylene, so you need to experiment to find where the "hot zone" is. Propane and propylene use more oxygen per cu-ft vs acetylene, but they also put out much more heat per cu-ft burned. The reason the BTU output is lower vs acetylene is that the higher oxygen consumption uses more of the flow capacity of the head, so the amount of fuel burned per minute is LESS than when acetylene is used. That is why equivalent BTU capacity alt-fuel heads have more orifices in them, to feed the overall larger amount of gas flow needed. In any case, you will likely find that the tip still puts out more than enough heat for any job. If not, you can always go online and buy a big honkin' alt-fuel rosebud :-)

Great info in the vid and your above lengthy comment. I just got my acetylene refilled and was going to use the rosebud for the first time in probably 20 years. when I first got the "journeyman" victor set, I did a lot of rosebud work and had no problems. So this time, I figured I better get a refresher on how to use this tip. I have a 75cuft tank and a victor 8-t29 rosebud. In doing some research, am I correct that I should NOT use this tip with this tank because it does not fit the 1/7 rule? I don't know how I was able to do it 40 years ago when I bought the set. I have used the same size tanks all these years. What size rosebud can I use with this 75cuft tank? it seems from the charts that a size 5 is all I can use (6cuft per hour). Is this correct? #6 is 14cuft minimum.

Kevin, a #8 is pretty big for a smaller Acetylene cylinder. I have a 75' cylinder, and according to Victor, the largest tip that is safe to use with it is a #4.

Back years ago when I was learning, they said with a rosebud to always set your regulators to the same pressure. But not over 15 psi. Try that, it has worked for me for the last 25 yrs. Different torches may be different but I've always used Victor and it works.

I have an older air products welding set. when I light the cutting torch, I had a lot of soot and it always popped when I turned on the oxygen, then went out. I opened the gas valve farther and problem solved. very little soot, and no pop when oxygen opens. Thank you..

I watched your video. I'm having popping issues at startup. Used your pressure setting based on the same size I'm using. Pops and goes out when starting to add O2. I tried to clean the head. I checked all seals and fittings. I'm at a loss.

I am assuming you checked your hoses and torch for leaks with soapy water, right!?!??! Try turning your acetylene down a little on the torch when you light it. You have to just crack the oxy valve open just a crack to get it started. You might also try bleeding the lines before you light. Do the acety. first.

I have had rosebud problems only rarely. Obviously 🙄 I need more gas but first I’ll check stats for Harris J-63. Usually I use rosebud because I want to bend very thick rod or bar a particular way. Either angles or curves. I am slightly intimidated by larger torch tips but I always check for clearance for sparks and remove all nearby combustible materials.

I just picked up a new Lincoln gas kit brazing tip set up worked fine. Cutting torch Gas is not coming out tip but base by nut.. oxygen set at 10 gas psi @ 5 for brazing… for cutting g35-40 Psi A-6 psi… any help would be appreciated

Don't forget to open the oxy valve on the center of the cutting torch. Open the oxy knob at the base about 1/2 turn and adjust with the knob on the torch attachment.

i have a harris built craftsman commercial torch set i bought a new cutting torch tip for it firing it up it pops every 20 secounds just free burning then it back flashed into the hoses and started burning a 50 ft hose back to the tanks fortunately i got the tanks shut off before disaster. i have had smith victor and marquette cutting torches and never had this problem my dual stage regulators were set a 7psi acytelene and 25 psi for oxygen with a stable neutral flame exscept for the popping

Definitely invest in two sets of flash arrestors, one set at the tanks and the other set at the torch, and also carefully inspect your hoses as they have had flame inside and maybe damaged. A new set of hoses and arrestors is cheap safety insurance vs. a gas bottle explosion and/or fire with you somewhere in the area and liable to be caught out.

I was wondering in my welding class we run 5 gas and 30-45 for oxy and I was wondering what the recommended settings were and it pops and I was wondering how to fix that. It usually starts to spark and bubble before it pops and I was wondering how to make it so it does not pop but so you are still able to push a puddle or run a bead. I was also wondering when you heat up a piece of metal that you have pushed a puddle on or welded it will have those weird ember things and I was wondering what they were and how to make it so they were not there?

Gas pressure settings all depends on the size of the tip you are using on the torch. The "spark and bubble" is most likely caused by the oxy pressure being too high in relation to the acetylene setting. The embers are probably unburnt acetylene. You may have a leak in the hose or torch. You should stop using this setup until that is fixed.

Hey, Kevin. I'm having trouble cutting even thin mild steel all the way through. Bran new 000 tips, proper settings per the guide chart, neutral flame, blue cones just touching the plate, etc. I get the material melting back together & or the cut not going all the way through to begin with. . The problem HAS to be my technique, but after hours of watching videos & practice, I'm still stuck on stupid. Any ideas?

Yes, I had a cheap rosebud that was barely leaking just behind the main head which I did not know at first. Dang thing would work fine for a bit but all of a sudden pop. Then I noticed if just the acetylene was on it would sometimes light like a match size flame there on the side. Had a damaged seat of the head, took it back and got a replacement but this one had no leaks and worked like it should with no popping.

I have a set of victor gages I have used for a long time (years) without problems. the last few months I have had a terrible time with popping. it starts out after just a few minutes. Now I can barely get it to use a full amount of flame compared to what I use to use, or it will pop right away. I have to have it at such a low heat it takes for ever to heat something up. I have the pressures set correctly for the size tip, and I never have it close to the part I am heating up to heat treat. after a little while it pops so much it sounds like a machine gun. super fast super loud repetitive pops until I just shut it off. I have tried cooling the tip and it works good for just a short time before it happens again. I thought it may be a bad tank of gas but just recently have replaces both O2 and accyt. tanks with same results. should I go buy a new set of gages and tip? do you think that is what I need. thanks for the help.

Thank you so much for this video. @2:55. Yep! This is me with my number 6 Rosebud: Radnon Victor 6-MFA-1. It is also me when I try to get what I think is a neutral flame and eventually it's an oxygen out--BOMBP!! I'm scaredy-cat because the rosebud doesn't just hiss like a lot of KZbin videos ckaim: this S.O.B. sounds more like a rocket ship launching into space just at 4 PSI acetylene. The accompanying booklet requires a minimum of 8 PSI acetylene. Furthermore, the booklet says not to starve the tip or else it will result in excessive heat and popping flashbacks. All I want to do is heat four sqare inches! $640 in equipment purchases later I made no progress in 3 hours. I'm kind of wishing I bought the $400 electrical cord heater kit at this point.

Never give a sucker an even break is a W.C. Fields movie and that's the way my life works; whenever I look around the poker table I can't find the stooge so I am the stooge. Neither the place that sold me the tote kit with a 10 cubic foot acetylene bottle nor the store that sold me the Victor Rosebud ever mentioned a problem with using a rosebud with a 10 cubic foot tank. I calculated that I could use this Rosebud for about 4.28 minutes before I violate the 1/10 rule. I hope this is enough to heat up a 1-1/2 inch thick pitman arm where the drag link fastens through it on my semi tractor. I'm getting to the point where I wish I just pickle-forked the S.O.B. $40 for the pickle fork and about $25 for a new drag link food and I could have saved the other $540. But I guess the Silver Lining is that I got the watch your video and a guy on Craigslist is trying to sell his tote kit for almost what I bought mine for new and his tanks don't have any gas where the shop through the gas in for gratis on mine.

Kevin Caron, Artist actually Kevin you use American... I'm English and it's our language...we speak it and spell it differently. I think what you meant to say was imperial or USC... And technically metric is called SI units 👍
