It’s actually more efficient as that layout later synergises really well with the gyroscope factories.

The upgrade actually specifies EXACTLY 2 other glass factories. A 2x2 will invalidate the buff as then they'll be adjacent to 3 (it counts diagonals as well, hence why the iron smelting in the 2x2 is a 75% buff, not 50%)
