Going Straight - S1 E3 Going Sour 0459am 9.5.23 this isn't a show about an ex-con it's about the tedium that ensues with reference to the average joe who had no desire to join up and see the world, doin' his duty for a country which has no love for him nor any desire to shine at anything in the name of love or art, no desire to take sides with the vast malaise that are the upper echelons or the animalia aka the plebs that litter life and are deemed it's movers and shakers... p.s Ingrid is really irritating.

I agree. I thought it'd been canned because when Fletch was removed from Slade prison the situation bit of 'sitcom' changed for the worse and messed up the dynamic of the show, but I was really surprised at how good it was. I can only assume it was really cancelled because of Richard Beckinsale's untimely death.

Saying that this wasn't as good as Porridge is unfair - Going Straight proved very popular upon launch and attracted over 15 million viewers and even won a BAFTA the following year in 1979. Plans for a second series were made but were dropped due to Richard Beckinsale's untimely death that year. If it wasn't for Richard's passing, I reckon this would have been as popular as Porridge, but didn't get the chance to. Like Porridge, Rising Damp, etc, this is top drawer stuff and miles better than the trash that passes for comedy today.

@KebabMusicLtd
@KebabMusicLtd 2 жыл бұрын
@@Tconcept I totally disagree. First off Godber wasn't even in this episode, but considering this series revolved around Fletch's home life, it couldn't have been easily finding ways of including Godber in the stories... In Prison Godber needed Fletch which created that dynamic between them but on the outside it was Fletch who was a little lost at sea whilst Lennie found it the easier to adapt to the outside world. Sadly, neither of them would enjoy freedom for long as was proved in the 1979 film, Doing Time.

Is this one of the first appearances of Nicholas Lindhurst? I knew he was in Butterflies but hadn't realised he was in this.

2:01 Feels like a joke that they could BARELY get away with in the '70s. That feels like a joke way before it's time.

I wonder why Porridge is frequently repeated on TV and Going Straight never is.

Going Straight was good but it wasn't legendary like Porridge was. It's just good. It wouldn't get the viewing numbers.

Humour has always changed. Go back 100 years and you'll probably find many jokes that aren't funny anymore; I don't know why people think this is something new. In another 50 years this might be considered a politically correct joke again.
