I live on the island of Trinidad and Tobago which is more than 8k miles from Fiji and almost everything about this ceremony is like ours. Our people, the saris , kurtas, the pundit and even the drums and as well the scenery looks so unbelievably much alike. And u would be warmly welcome to a hindu home without an invitation as well. Happy to see that our culture is still alive no matter what part of the world Indians live

Hi Nigel, thanks for your most interesting and well described comment posted. I could not have said it better. I was born in Trinidad but have migrated. I do remember all the weddings that I attended while living on the beautiful island. This video brought back so many pleasant memories. Our culture brought to their new lands by our forefathers is still well and alive. Thanks for the blog Pale blue Dot. I enjoyed watching every minute of your video.

Thank you, Christiana. I had a gut feeling this vlog would have a big impact with the Indian diaspora community. I'm already planning to do more weddings, cultural functions, etc. as well as over other aspects of life of all communities in Fiji and the Pacific. There is a 'Girmit Centre' in the neighbouring city of Lautoka. 'Girmit' is a corruption of the word 'agreement' detailing the indenture experience of Indo-Fijians. Once Covid restrictions ease, they'll start having functions there and I will endeavour to do vlogs from there.

@@ThePaleBlueDot I do want to add something else here. Since I have studied the indian diaspora, especially Indo-Fijians. Considering that they were brought and kept in such dire circumstances, it was almost impossible to hold on to family values and family life. Very few women were brought, men had to buy their wives. It is a testimony to Indian culture, and the hindu customs, that over a matter of few decades Indo-fijians overturned all that. Kept their values, brought women from hom and established the sanctity of family. No good societies without stable families. Families come with their issues but not having families and the potential of stability that they can provide is not an option. The core has to be maintained. I hope Indo-Fijians ignore bollywood movies that make fun of rituals. Every other movie today shows bride and groom getting cold feet, people running away from the alter, or mandap. These are ways to undermine what the wedding itself stands for. Unilke English and many other languages --in Sanskrit the word for wedding and married life is the same. Vivaah, meaning flow...married life then is a vehicle that carries on through life. Many ups and down, raising children keeps on busy....one wonders why they do it....and yet, grihasthas, those who willingly enter the 'yangna' of married life, are the ones who carry on a society, rituals and traditions. All the things that ultimately make living worth living. Thanks again for doing this.

You're soo English in your "rural hamlet" description !😁 a Fijian would probably just describe it as " na noqu i tikotiko " Anyway, the massive backyard, bamboo framed, corrugated roofed sheds for a wedding reception are just so homely and intermit, compared to the fancier hotel/venue receptions. Loved your protective security detail escorting to the wedding as an honoured guest. 👌🏾 The kava session to the side was obvious, seems like you've turned into a kava swiper Azeem 😊 The memories of the smell from the pundits ceremonial smoke making took me back right there. Just a side note tho Azeem, you should have taken off your bucket hat out of courtesy as a special guest, just saying. . . Anyway, I'm probably just mad bcos the shot of you devouring those vegetarian curries with puri, made me soo jealous. Always love your " fly on the wall " vlogs mate , cheers.

Had to say this...watching this for the second time while working. I remember as kids we would dance (like mischievous monkeys) when the ladies sang. Anyone else remember doing this? By the way Azeem, you are doing a great service to Fiji, bringing the culture to the world. Dare I say you could soon develop a cultural, geographic and historic documentary channel for Fiji.

Thank you, Raj. 😃👍🏽👌🏽 😎 I could have a few more wedding videos coming up soon (I prefer weddings like the one in this vlog where people are so humble and hospitable). I've got so many stories to convey about Fiji. I just need to build up a bigger subscription base before I really launch myself. Eventually, I want to focus on Fiji and the rest of the Pacific (Pasifika). I will have to go back to Italy for a few months to tie up some legal issues regarding my apartment there but rest assured I will be vlogging from Italy ('A Fijian in Matera' will make for some interesting stories!). And possibly Colombia before returning to Fiji. But there are many, many more stories to come!

Fun fact! A difference between the two weddings you went to- the first one was with northern Indian traditions while the second one was with South Indian traditions. It may not be as easily noticed but some differences were the clothing styles and the music played in the different weddings. The food also could be different but I didn’t get to see that in the video for the second wedding.
@ThePaleBlueDot
@ThePaleBlueDot 3 жыл бұрын
I had so much to eat at the first wedding, Lakshay, I felt bloated! 😂😂 That's why I couldn't eat at the second one although the father of the bridegroom insisted. By the way, did you mean the first wedding was South Indian? I had payasam for desert at that wedding. Above all else, I was treated with so much courtesy and respect at both weddings it was a very humbling experience for me.
@lakshay8496
@lakshay8496 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThePaleBlueDot The first wedding was definitely a North Indian one based on the music and clothing (couldn’t see much of the customs but I’m sure with whatever else I had noticed!) when compared to the second one which I’m sure is South Indian. As for payasam the word payasam in South Indian languages generally refers to any slightly wet dessert though North Indians in Fiji have unanimously associated that word with the wet sweet made of moong daal (while a South Indian would specifically say ‘moong daal payasam’ as they’d call kheer as ‘rice payasam’. Either way that form of payasam has become quite popular with the general Indian population which may be why it was served in the first wedding. You should have tried something at the second wedding as the food cooked by that community is said to be more delicious! Either way thanks for posting these wonderful videos.

Someone recently asked me why the priest says “Swaha” at the end of every sentence. This is symbolic just as the two wives of Lord Ganesh or Ganapati, consorts Siddhi & Buddhi; Suddhi means spiritual power and Buddhi means intellectual power. Similarly “Swaha” is the wife/consort of Lord Agni (Fire), but any sentence (mantra) said to him is incomplete without the mention of his wife “Swaha”. Now you know the equality of power in Hinduism (Sanatan Dharma) of women.

Indian Hindus should prepare English sub titles of the pundit chanting. To begin with pundit said: 6:49 the first prayer should be to the mother earth. 20:38 "Om ishthdevata..." (it is very important here to understand the concept of God/ goddesses here) Isthdevtaye (in simple terms it is personalised God/ goddesses of the individual/ family...), 'kuldevtayein' (clan or clans God / goddesses), 'gramdevtayein' (village gods/ goddesses)
