Kessil has been producing LED lights for fresh and saltwater aquariums for quite some time now, and they have grabbed a foothold in the market with their Dense Matrix LED clusters and simple, refined control that just works. Kessil has a few different models of LED lights for reef tanks, and today we are going to take an in-depth look at the A360X.
Today on BRStv, we have a brand new episode of our series, BRStv Investigates. In this series, we explore popular reefing theories, products, methods, and what the manuals are missing, with a focus on putting them to the test!
If you liked this episode, and want to watch more, keep an eye out because we release new BRStv Investigates episodes every Friday. We have many more tests that we are currently running and then a bunch more that we want to complete. If you want us to investigate everything make sure to let us know in the comments below.

I still don't think we should overlook the fact that BRS is renting par meters. When you find a company that is willing to do something like this, you know they care about your success. BRS is just simply amazing and they have a similar awesome business model. I think we can all can agree that they care about our tanks and are willing to go out on a limb to help us. We watch these videos, with all their knowledge, understanding that us reefers are a small group and it just blow my mind that a company is willing to put in the time and effort. Thanks Ryan! And thanks to your business partner. Believe, the reefing community wouldn't be where it is today without you folks. You are awesome and par meter rentals is a great example of how much you care.

Thanks for this excellent video, Ryan. Good to see I choose A360X over AP700 same as Ryan's points in this video. My 190 gallon tank already has AP700x2 and ATI 4' Hybrid which perform great to my coral, but I just decided and bought 4 A360X to maximize darker corner for my over size 4 feet tank. PAR per unit is never a problem to me but how to arrange them into an integrated look light system. Now my problem how I integrated 4 A360X into a good looking ATI+AP700 system. Haha

I spent an hour at my LFS debating whether to go with the AI 26 or the Kessil 360x. I just traded in 2 old Kessil WE because I didn’t like the fact that I could never get the corals to pop with these lights. After watching this video I decided to get the X and after 24 hrs of experience with this light I’m happy I made the decision. This light is different than the previous version. I pointed the WE and the X against a white background and you can see how the X does a better job at mixing the spectrum. Coral pop is better and I’m going to supplement with XHO over T5.

Thanks a ton for doing the video. Based on the PAR charts and the price point though, I am super disappointed in this light. It is just not pushing the par you need for a 24-30 inch deep tank. Period. I also think the representation of the price of the lights is a bit unfair as you keep leaving out the spectral controller which is now required since there is no web interface. All in all it seems like Kessil took a technological step backwards with this release in just about every way but the improved spectral plot. What they needed to do was invest in an app developer to improve their web interface. Instead they developed an expensive hardware controller which I frankly have no desire to pay extra for. I've been going back and forth on how I want to move forward on the lighting choices for my 256g, and I may just go back to halide and T5. I hope Kessil learns from this experience and improves upon the AP700 style of light(which was brighter and had app based control) rather than ignoring what people are asking for. Cheers. Adding in my research which got buried in replies: Comparison between 3 options: XR15 x 4 units w/ normal setting at 6.5" mounting hieght kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3a5Z6CDat2YfJI Price = $1,776 6 inch: Avg 286 (Extrapolated by taking undifused 358 and using ~20% reduction) 12 inch: Avg 268 (Extrapolated by taking undifused 335 and using ~20% reduction) 18 inch: Avg 248 (Extrapolated by taking undifused 309 and using ~20% reduction) 360x x 4 units w/ normal setting at 6.5" mounting hieght kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4fSp4aPe6eVaLM Price = $1,895 (w/ spectral controller) 6 inch: Avg 300 12 inch: Avg 265 18 inch: Avg 232 AP700 x 2 units w/ normal user setting at 7" mounting hieght kzbin.info/www/bejne/lae3koyCeJ6ieM0 Price = $ 1,598 No average is listed, so I computed it myself: 6 inch: 30 measurments at 207 -> 207*30/66 = 94 22 measurments at 444 -> 444*22/66 = 148 14 measurments at 663 -> 663*14/66 = 140 Avg = 382(94+148+140) 12" 30 measurments at 296 -> 296*30/66 = 134 22 measurments at 382 -> 382*22/66 = 128 14 measurments at 452 -> 452*14/66 = 96 Avg = 358(134+128+96) 18" 30 measurments at 315 -> 315*30/66 = 143 22 measurments at 327 -> 327*22/66 = 109 14 measurments at 335 -> 335*14/66 = 71 Avg = 323(143+109+71) As you can see, the Xr15 and 360x have about the same exact par output when averaged out across all three levels(~265Par). However, the AP700 has an average(354Par) that puts out a staggering 33% more PAR. What on earth is going on here? Watt to watt, it doesn't seem to make much sense. Did you guys have some major measurement errors in your AP700 video? That is the only thing I can think of that would change my analysis. At 15% cheaper than the 360x option, with 33% more PAR under the same scenario, I stand by my point on the AP700. Yes the spectral output is better, but the overall PAR output is significantly less. One could also improve the spread of the ap700 by raising the light(which will drop the PAR some), but the same cannot be said for the 360x for increasing PAR by lowering it even further as it is impractical.
@thomashall41
@thomashall41 5 жыл бұрын
Very well said! This is exactly what I was thinking. Very disappointed in the PAR numbers and would like to see them come out with a second generation AP700 using the wider spectrum.
@ryanbatcheller394
@ryanbatcheller394 5 жыл бұрын
that's absolutely true with a single one but with deeper tanks I think it is less about creating focused beams of light that reach the bottom at high PAR and more about how intersecting light patterns build upon each other from multiple light sources. I was really happy with the PAR numbers we got from 4 units in a 4 foot tank. Created a nice balance of PAR from top to bottom.
@ryanbatcheller394
@ryanbatcheller394 5 жыл бұрын
@@thomashall41 More or less the 700 is just two 360's with more flexibility in positioning. The lower PAR at the bottom is a net effect of the ultra wide lens which is going to decrease peak par numbers the future you get from the lens. They could make it higher PAR or narrow the focus of the lens to increase peak par numbers but the result is going to be PAR hot spots at the top to create acceptable numbers at the bottom. It is just difficult to use a small puck or cluster of LEDs and distribute light evenly. IMO the only way it can be done is ultra wide lenses and multiple light sources or a large panel of LED's .
@jrcoralfarmer
@jrcoralfarmer 5 жыл бұрын
@@ryanbatcheller394 I wish I had your resources for experimentation :) I would love to see how this stacks up to a comparable xr15 setup w/diffusers( 2, 3, and 4 pucks). IMO I think they went too wide on the beam. I'd prefer a narrower beam that I can adjust by changing height to meet needs as opposed to an ultra wide beam that I have less ability to adjust. Thanks again for all your hard work to bring this reefer knowledge to the masses.

Fantastic video review. I have been contemplating which kessil to get and have ran across some people complaining about them. They are billed as having a 50k hour life which they say is about 11 years before they drop to 75% intensity but some people have had some of the squares burn out or total failure of the light in less than a year. You didn't say what the warranty is on them. Would be interesting to see a one year update, especially from anyone running a bunch of these.

If I was starting from nothing, I would probably pay the extra $100 and go with 3 x A360X for my 90gal. However, I already have 3 x A360N with the Aquatic Life hybrid fixture set up, and not worth the upgrade to me. Also agree that would like to see Apex compatibility. So many are already vested in Neptune gear, I wouldn't want to spend the $100 for the controller. All together, that would cover the cost of another A360.

Must say I was excited at first for this light and then it slowly disappeared as you add the $ to light a sps tank. Ecotech’s XR15 pro’s are cheaper and ready to go with the reef link. No need for extra k-link cables and controllers that take up space etc etc. It’s too bad they choose that price point. If they priced it like the 360we and included the controller instead of nickel and diming I am sure they would convert more buyers, especially in the nano tank realm. For my 25 lagoon I was waiting on these lights and then now I am backtracking to the xr15pros. Beautiful light fixture though and I am sure future generations will be even better, just not there yet.

@BRStv

You don't necessarily have to add on a spectral controller or wifi dongle. Each light has a knob on top for intensity and color, so you could plug them straight into a wall outlet timer for on/off control. You just wouldn't have any automatic ramp up or down in light intensity. Not a big deal, but a feature that a lot of reefers enjoy.

I will take a little less polished shimmer for being able grow any sps I want. Kessil just isn't there yet. They are the Apple of the led reefing world. A lot of polish but a little underpowered and not nearly enough improvement for current 360we users to upgrade. It is like owning an iphone x and deciding whether to upgrade to the xs or xs max. Just not enough difference to justify the $$$. Just for a small 40 to 60 gallon tank stocked with sps I would need to have 2 kessil 360x's and a controller ($1000) vs. an option like the Orphek Atlantic V4 compact at $770 and a gateway $130 ($900) that will grow all your sps in those tanks and still look almost as good as the kessil. I will agree that just looks of the tank alone that kessil beats everyone in the led world. But looks don't grow corals. I removed kessil 360 and replaced with the orphek and coral growth took off as well as coloring. Ryan mentioned he would like to see orphek come out with a diffuser to eliminate the disco ball effect. There is very little of that and really you just need to find the sweet spot on hanging height to eliminate most of it. I will agree though that a diffuser would be a nice option to have. I'm not really kessil bashing here because I do like them and there is a market for them but they really are not a viable option for the serious sps tank. I will say that if you combine them with t5 like the aquatic life then you have a winner. But at another $230 plus the bulb expense on top of the $1000 you already spent. In the end I just don't think kessil did enough to justify upgrading and surely not at the current price point. Put the 360x at the $349 a360we price and then phase out the a360we with a price drop down to say $275 until they are gone.
@bckey1440
@bckey1440 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think that anyone is comparing the difference in longevity of the top few led reef lights. It is more about par, shimmer, disco ball effect, spectrum, spread, etc.Who cares if you get close to 14000 hours out of a light if said light didn't produce the results needed for your reef tank.
@bckey1440
@bckey1440 5 жыл бұрын
I got ya. After I calculated out your hours using a 12 hour day for the lights it comes out to just over 3 years. Not long for the price paid. I'm not sure that is the common amount of time for the 360 to begin having problems. A lot of factors go into possible causes. One thing I do know. Kessil was outstanding in customer service when I needed help. They replaced an a360we for me that worked just fine but had a stripped out mount hole. I was going to send it in for repair when they decided to just send a new one. I was pretty stunned. So I can't say anything negative about their customer service. I do think their lights are extremely polished and tank ready for any level of user. I just wish their pricing and par output was better. I will say again what I said above. If you combine the kessil 360x with a T5 option like Aquatic Life you have a winner and probably the best lighting option both appearance wise and par distribution wise if done in the right combination. Money becomes a factor. I would love to see ATI or Giesemann come out with something similar to the Aquatic Life where the reefer could use their existing led lights in the their T5 offering. I like Aquatic Life for what they have done with giving the consumer a T5/LED option that is open ended. It was an innovative approach and one that is in increasing demand by the reefing community. I am hoping for some higher end options in the future from Dave at Aquatic Life and other competing companies. Competition in this particular area will be really good for the reefing community going forward. Things in the saltwater aquarium lighting world are getting better all the time.

29 gallon tanks are usually 30" long, while the Kessil A360X is better suited for a max area of about 24" x 24". For a standard 29 gallon mixed reef, I would suggest two AI Prime fixtures instead. The two smaller fixtures will allow for better light spread across the length of the tank vs a single larger fixture like this one.

You can control the intensity with the built in knob, by using the wifi dongle, or by adding a spectral controller X.

Can I ask a question? How do you keep the light in the tank? I mean no spillover into the room? with no hood 😬
@BRStv
@BRStv 5 жыл бұрын
The best way would be to choose a light that the max spread does not spill to far out of the tank. For the light that you can see from the side of your LED this is more difficult. Some use custom blinders, or a canopy to help mask this light.
@marcelrodriguez2067
@marcelrodriguez2067 4 жыл бұрын
Get yourself a narrow reflector since it decreases the spread ALOT. You might have to put the light a bit higher since the light will be much more narrow.

Sorry, I have to ask: does shimming mean not disco effect? Which means Kessil is among the best LEDs to eliminate disco ball effect lightning?
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
Shimmer is that natural randomized line pattern on the sand bed that you'll see on a shallow ocean reef. The disco ball effect is more of an issue of color blending with little red and green dots shooting everywhere. Kessil is definitely one of the leading brands when it comes to good shimmer and eliminating the disco ball effect.

I understand that manufacturing all the leds in a dense array has advantages in terms of blending, contrast & getting the shimmer effect but.. Wouldn't this lead to major heat issues & affect the longevity of the light? Heat really affects the efficiency & performance of an led & leads to an early death. Seems like having a bunch of high power leds putting off heat bunched together in a tiny area is a recipe for disaster long term. I understand that Kessil has a custom heat sink & fan but with the heat each individual led generates & having almost no space to dispate this heats seems like it would fry the led & shorten its life span. I would love to see some sort of test where they measure the PAR initially then several hours later to see if the PAR levels are consistent. I feel like heat would be a major factor in the performance when running for long periods of time and also the long term reliability of the light. I also have to say it would be nice if Kessil could publish data on their own leds & be more transparent rather than hoping their customers blindly trust them. An example of this would be their 25% brighter claim where we don't know the specs of their leds & are just supposed to take their word at it. Lastly I think it's ridiculous that Kessil is charging their customers a $100 for a controler. You could build your customers a damn app if they are paying nearly half a grand for your product. The dials on the fixture itself is great but having no sunrise/sunset, timer or way to access the secondary colors without the controller frankly sucks. Makes having the controller an almost must buy in my opinion. Also it's just one more controller to lose or break or replace batteries on. All that being said I really like the cohesiveness and shimmer that Kessil lights have. I also really respect that they design and build their own leds in house. And Kessil Logic is a great idea, not having to worry about trying to find the optimal spectrum yourself. Being able to just set the color blend to what looks good & knowing it's going to optimize coral growth is a great advantage. I'm really torn between the Kessil A160we & an AI prime for my nanocube. I just have concerns about the longevity of the Kessil. Thank you BRS for all of your informative & easy to understand videos. You are a treasure trove of information for all the marine and reef keepers out there.
@Surefire67

@@BRStv I would be interested in both but I was mainly concerned about par readings after a few hours of running full output or 8 hrs later. I know on candlepowerforums there is a ton of data on high power flashlights & when a specific light is measured on a graph of light output (usually measured in lumens or lux for flashlights) over time; there is almost always a drop in brightness after 30 seconds, 1 min, 5 mins etc. Obviously this depends on many factors including how hard the leds are driven, how well the light is cooled, thermal mass etc. I have no idea about Reef lighting but on high performance flashlights they will sometimes throttle back the output of the light if it reaches a certain temperature to prevent the leds from frying themselves. I would guess that heat would affect this lights performance more than an Hydra or Radion because of the extreme close proximity of the leds to each other & the small surface area of the leds in contact with the heat sink but that is just a prediction. Hopefully Kessil has enough cooling where this would be a non issue. Thanks for the response. Good to know BRS listens to their customers

I'm either going to buy three Kessil A360X or three Radion xr15. For 120 gallon acropora/sps reef aquarium add them to the auqtic life 48" Hybrid T5 fixture. This well be my first reef I don't like softcorals. Saving money for a year, can't wait to get a call from the bank. they usual call after a huge purchase the conversation well go like this "so what did you buy a car, a piece of land or a small house" " No I bought three fish lights ". How I'm going to explain that i spent $3000 for fish lights. 🤷‍♂️

So is spectrum in the video (20% color, 100% violet, 20% red and 0% green @ 100% intensity) just a baseline to test the PAR or a spectrum recommendation? I know you say in the video that it "made the most sense visually and by spectrometer" but is that also the recommendation for coral growth? I guess with Kessil is doesn't matter as much and it's more for visuals right?
