You could see it from a different standpoint: Gojira have a message that was overheard. So they dicided to shout it out. And maybe the music is not aggressive but disturbing - and that's just the way it should be when carrying their massage.

And it's a great display of their approach. Gojira aren't fluffy-bunny tree-huggers. They are all about impact. And what music matches the brutality of human impact on nature better than theirs? Of course you could deliver the message even more misanthropic and gore-y (like Cattle Decapitation), but if bulldozing the Amazonas doesn't make you feel massive anger (or even "holy" wrath) - man, I don't know what else does. Silly satanic gorefest? Probably not. Not for me.

You’re totally right... a soft message inside the hardest sound. I feel bad for people who have a problem with taking care of the earth. It’s such a basic thing. Another reason why Gojira defies the label of ‘death metal’. They are something completely different, and they evade categorization.

My first, and only experience with Gojira live was at Heavy Montreal. I had just seen Sleep and Trivium, 2 live bands that have been playing together forever and play absolutely flawlessly. I knew Gojira was going to be great, but they made Trivium, as I mentioned before, an insanely tight band, look like a high school talent show by comparison. To your point Drew, about the message, Joe's presence on stage from the second he walks out is one of absolute disgust for humans and their disregard for the planet. It seems an unusual thing for heavy music to have an environmental message at first, but once you've done some digging, you'll see that a few of the most successful bands in metal have these types of themes. Carcass and Death both delve into the worlds of ethics and death, for animals and humans respectively.

@@atharvajoshi5331 idk man he seems to be digging the prog scene. Just because those 2 are more straightforward doesn't mean it would hook him. If he isn't impressed out of the gate he'll never get into the more intricate stuff. Not saying he wouldn't like those, I just think Quasimodo has more character and is a perfect balance of their sounds for a good first showcase.

Oh man, you like guitar riffs and groove, Mastodon have them both in loads :) Halloween is a great jumping off point, the last two albums have cleaner vocals and are, dare I say it, easier listening :) than the earlier stuff. Jaguar God is the kind of music that I didn;t think got made anymore and The Last Baron has a real beauty of a riff.

I completely understand what you mean by different lyrical topics motivate people in different ways, and I am someone who actually really loves their lyrics and the environmental/ethical messages they discuss. I like to think that songs which people really connect to are ones which cover topics that are really deep and that many people can relate to on a personal level. When you put the environmental and ethical issues that they sing about into perspective you can see that these are actually issues that transcend the individual heartbreak and hardships we are all faced with, as we are all contributing to these issues on a much larger scale. They talk about our collective contribution as a species and as individuals to the destruction of life on earth itself rather than a blip of hardship that may occur in someones life, and sometimes I feel like that holds so much more meaning and warrants such hardcore instrumentals much more than hardship that an individual may face in their life.

Drew I'm telling you The Way of All Flesh is their best album, but I'm thrilled that you're enjoying FMTS so much. Hope you get through their discography. Oroborus (trk 1 of TWOAF) is probably top 5 all of their songs, then theres the brain melter Toxic Garbage Island. But the true magic is the back half. 8-12 are just such fire, a brutal spiritual experience.

Their Magma album dealt with more about their mom passing since she died around the time the album was being produced

If you want insanity live, check Clone from them, the live version at Vieilles Charrues Festival 2010, so chaotic and heavy.

That slow half time main riff reminds me of a boss fight or villain in a movie. As they enter \m/

I used to turn up the fading out riff fucking loud so it sounded the same volume as the rest of the track lol

Love it! You'll really fall down the rabbit hole once you start listening to their early albums. Check out "Death of Me" off of The Link and "Space Time" off of Terra Incognita
