Funny enough the English VA’s for Gojo and Makima, Kaji Tang and Suzie Yeung respectively, have been in Death Battle before. The latter being Spider Gwen in Season 7 and the former being Zoro in Season 3, All-Might in Season 6 and… Samurai Jack in Season 5. Which episode did they show us in the theater again? A nice little touch.

Gojo Makima was one of the most important to me with all the precious memories and great times I’ve had with friends and the episode really epitomizes the myriad of intricate interesting aspects to the match, the superb narrative thematics and the adjoined melding of both shows and utilizing it to great effect, thanks for the great review as always.

The only thing I really didn’t agree with was I don’t by that limitless isn’t an attack and that Makimas contract as a result would make Gojo hit by the contracts backlash

They say in the results that Gojo is immune to the effects of his own Domain Expansion, so Unlimited Void wouldn’t stop him from finishing Makima off even if it was distributed throughout Japan’s populous.

@@GalacticAttorney Again this is the result of people not understanding Makimas contract. He can be immune to his own domain expansion all he wants it doesn't really matter because Makima's contract doesnt' reflect the exact attack that hit her, and I quote: "any attacks inflicted to Makima are transferred into an appropriate illness or ailment affecting a random citizen of Japan" The key words here being an appropriate illness or ailment, not the attack that hit her. Similarly even if he was immune to his own effects and her contract did work like that then that would just mean she inflicts it all at him and he's unharmed and she's back and we're back at square one. How can he finish her off if she literally can't be finished as long as he, a citizen of japan, is still alive? You literally have to ignore her contract to arrive at that conclusion.

Nah bro despite how well this episode was made and the animation being amazing (too short tho) It's impossible to ignore how dirty they did Makima's character here, turned her into a generic villain halfway through the fight Talking as much as Gojo, generic evil laugh and that final scream were all terrible choices by the one who scripted the battle Also the way Gojo won was pretty bad too, showing Makima can hurt him with Bang multiple times but not once aiming at his head (which would've ended the battle)

The animations are for entertainment purposes not to show exactly how the DB would play out just the end results. Having Gojo immediately put her in his domain expansion to instantly end the fight would not be as interesting as showing a battle. Makima wanted to control Gojo, thus not just shooting him in the head but instead incapacitating him but she was not aware he could regenerate and break her mind control. That's a perfect explanation for the animation side but again the animation isn't supposed to be a perfect recreation of a fight just some entertainment rather than just say "Gojo wins because of his domain expansion, the end."

@@DioxJXD Yeah but the "she wanted to control him" is a really dumb way to do it cause these are supposed to be fights to the death and Makima can control people after they died so she doesn't need to do it rn. Of course this is only about the animation but it is the most important part of the episode and her characterization was really generic Also Gojo wouldn't win that way, they actually gave Makima the speed advantage and a way to kill him so by their own rules it'd be just a Bang to the head and done

I’m glad they didn’t include the end scene, as someone who’s watched and read a bit of JJK I don’t think it fits Gojo. He’s not the kinda guy who would kill a child obvi but he and many others don’t view curses in any similarity to people. They’re subhuman that’s only purpose is to bring harm and do evil things to humans. He likely wouldn’t kill her in front of Denji if he has some attachment, but he’s not gonna let that slide

So Gojo vs Makima is one of those fights where on the surface level, it’s amazing. But as a manga reader and knowing how Makima is, she is incredibly out of character here and is incredibly egregious in some areas. And the scream that many are praising, likely for the serotonin boost they got from it, is probably the worst part as Makima has never shown emotion like this even upon feeling far worse pain and the realization of her own death. It honestly felt very cringe to me. I understand that people who don’t read CSM may see this as nitpicky, but you don’t understand just how much Makima’s character is emphasized in the story and to strip that away just to give Gojo fans a serotonin boost honestly makes me not like this episode as much as I would have Also conclusion is possibly the worst they have ever done. Someone needs to be critical of the episode because I do think the problems I mentioned are important cause honesty after Gojo calls Makima weak, I could hardly even recognize her. She goes to far into basic anime villain territory.

@@godhaloknight6332 I never said Gojo calling Makima weak make Makima out of character. That’s just when she starts to skip most. In the animation she is very talkative. Like she talks more than Gojo which is very weird for her but can be forgiven. After she is called weak, she starts to manically laugh which is just something she wouldn’t do. She has only really laughed once and it was specifically because she was mentally destroying Denji. Her hitting a annoying powerhouse would not cause her to go full mustache twirling villain. Also the scream at the end. Honestly I don’t want to spoil much but spoilers for CSM…….Makima’s canon death has her die in an extremely slow and painfully way yet she doesn’t scream or cry in fear or pain. She remains her stoic self. She is intentionally written that way for a reason. Because that is her character and her presence. That’s why her scream and devolving into a basic anime villain feels so cringe. Because it feels like she is just being used for a serotonin boost for Gojo fans.

@@zachspool I'd say she talks as MUCH as Gojo, mainly just for a rebuttal and whatnot. I can, from what you said, still not mind Makima's laugh because she saw the sheer shock on Gojo when she finally landed a hit, so the reason you said she laughed, personally, makes sense to me from what you're telling me. She wasn't laughing because she was called weak, she was laughing because she landed a hit on Gojo after he was talkin' smug all fight, and got him to a state of being in ACTIVE shock and bewilderment. The scream? Kind of understandable, but honestly the lack of a scream would hinder the death, and given how it's a different circumstance this time (having her brain have an infinite amount of information while having her body quite literally reduced to nothing), I can't really get on board with it being out of character from what I've seen and have been told so far. I mean I respect your stance on this, I just can't quite see it or agree with it

@@godhaloknight6332 like I said before, it makes sense that people who aren’t fully aware of the source material would not see it as out of character. Because you aren’t aware of the full extent of the character. Like the reactions are justified for a normal human or even other villains therefore it would make sense for Makima. But sadly us CSM fans realize just how cringe it is. Makima would not show that level of emotion for someone like Gojo. It’s her defining characteristic. I also heavily disagree that no scream would ruin the death. I think the only way you could argue that would be if you specifically did want the serotonin boost of hearing Makima scream. In fact having Makima’s eyes continue to coldly look at Gojo and Pierce the purple until they disappear is way more effective than stick villain death 101. Also straying from a character’s characterization is not justified because you think it makes a kill better. Like imagine if Maka did win and Gojo at the end dropped to his knees and admitted defeat before death. Yeah wouldn’t feel right. Also the info dump would mean nothing. If anything it would stop her from screaming as she has no idea what to do. And she can’t be screaming in pain because that’s not the purpose of the Domain. And if it did cause pain then the argument that it isn’t an attack would become moot. Plus Makima died very quickly in this fight. She is used to having we her body completely destroyed multiple times in brutal ways. But her canon death was slow, painful and she had plenty of time to reflect on her lose. None of it made her break. So again as I said above, I understand if people don’t think it’s a big deal, but just know that it’s wildly out of character and that just because a typical villain may react this way, doesn’t mean Makima would

@@zachspool You know, you make some fair points, but I find it odd that you still call this very "generic" and such when honestly Makima still stands out as a villain to me, the problem I still have with your statements is the whole argument about "You only want the scream to get the serotonin boost like Gojo fans did," which still comes off very poorly and generalized against Gojo fans, if I'm being honest. I'm not a fan of either Gojo or Makima (not to say I dislike them, I just don't know either series well aside from the memes), I'm as casual about them as you can be from an outsider's perspective. And yeah, your example of Makima's death does also hold from a thematic standpoint, and is an interesting take on it, so I can't really argue against that, but I still can't really get the hold of her dying quickly vs dying slowly, because they're just circumstances that nobody else can really enact onto Makima, and honestly her being used to dying brutally kind of makes the simpler execution all the more different and new, oddly enough, but, I'll agree to disagree in that regard. My other point wasn't that Domain Expansion caused pain, it was that it was a new sensation that she herself has never experienced before. But regardless, I still don't think they showed Makima as generic as, say, like Frieza or some other big bad who goes out screaming, and while I do get your points about it being out of character, I don't think it makes her generic because of it.
