Seeing the Jundokan emblem takes me back to when I was training under sensei Suzuki Hiromi back in the early and mid 90s. I started training again earlier this year under some of his other past students but my work schedule got in the way so I had to drop it. Anyways, nice to see the emblem again and to know Goju-Ryu is representing. 😁👍

Ah, what a lineage! Hopefully you can get back to training soon - karate is long, life is short, and I am sure the dojo will be ready for you when you can get back. We often have students who need to put their karate on hold, and they are always missed while they are gone. We do our best to represent our beloved Goju - we can't let karate internet only be dominated by one or two styles! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

Growing up in Hawai’i, it was taboo to wear a shirt under the gi. Women were the exception however in general no shirts worn under the gi. And many of masters would use their gi outside of training! Most often right after training going to get food or drinks but still wearing the gi there is nothing wrong with that. First night of receiving the gi we do what we call “clean the floor” Students will lay on their chest, extend their arms outward then do what is essential a laying toe movement to propel ourselves forward in a line. It builds the lat muscles in the back and teaches the new student that the gi is nothing special and just an outfit to use during training so that we don’t ruin our everyday clothes.

This is truly such a special comment to recieve! It is an education for me to hear how others have trained around the world, and I am grateful you took the time to share. We have a bit of a weird thing here in South Africa that if you wear a full gi outside the dojo, it can attract fights or weird comments. Gi pants and tshirt not as much, but definitely not worth the drama to wear full gi outside. In one of our other videos, we talk about how the uniform is a working outfit, and I really like the idea of showing that it is for working. It's not sacred, but it is still important in its way! Thank you again for sharing your insights 🙏🏻

@@GojuRyuKarateCentre right on I appreciate your time. Much love for my Karate brothers and sisters. My teacher Professor Antone Navas was taught by his father Antone Navas Sr, the man who taught Tino Ceberano as Masaiichi Oshiro’s right hand man and second in command.

Indeed. We are thought that the dogi is just clothing and nothing more. Rules and etiquettes are just nonessential. It’s the martial artist inside the dogi is what’s important. Treat your dogi like an old hoodie. But learn to wash it if you want to keep the material supple and reactive.

Absolutely! I personally prefer Kata gi, but I see the appeal of the lighter kumite gi

lol, I’ll wear my dogi when ever I want thank you very much. If you learn the history of the dogi your quickly realise they are not that important.

Yes, they are working clothes, but its also important to look after it too. I teach kids, and they have a tendency to get grass stains and tomato sauce on their suits lol
