Gold coins of 10 francs : rarity and value

How much are the 10 gold coins? This question is very often asked.
The pieces of 10 francs gold are always worth at least their weight in fine gold. This value evolves with gold prices in the global market. Of course, this price may vary up or down depending on the supply and demand of precious metals.
The pieces of 10 gold francs all have the same weight. They weigh 3,2258 grams. They are made of pure gold 900 thousandths or 90% if one prefers. That means they contain 2.90 grams of pure gold and 0.32 grams of alloy.
This alloy is usually composed of copper and is sometimes mixed with a small amount of silver.
The metallic composition of the pieces is explained by the fact that these pieces were intended for the current circulation. Since gold is a ductile metal, ie fragile, when it is 100% pure, the pieces intended for the current circulation were mixed with a percentage of metal intended to make the pieces more solid.
The percentage of pure metal contained in the 10-gold gold coins was fixed by the law of 17 Germinal, Year XI, that is to say on April 7, 1803. The 10-gold gold coins therefore have the same gold content. end that all French gold coins minted under the "Germinal" franc.
This law was established by Napoleon I and fixed for more than a century the weight of all the French gold coins, in particular pieces of 20 gold francs. These gold coins are also known as "Napoleon" because the coins minted under Napoleon's reign bore his portrait. They are also sometimes called Louis d'or because before the French Revolution the gold coins bore the portrait of the kings of France, the last being Louis XVI.
The pieces of 10 gold francs correspond exactly to half a Napoleon-type coin of 20 gold francs: 3,2258 grams for the pieces of 10 francs against 6,45161 grams for the pieces of 20 francs gold. Pieces of 10 gold francs are sometimes referred to as half Napoleon or half Louis d'Or.
The 10-franc gold coins were made between 1850 and 1914: the first 10-franc coins were only made in the second half of the 19th century.
The first pieces of 10 francs gold bear on the obverse the portrait of Ceres, an ancient deity. These coins were minted under the 2nd Republic. Subsequently the parts were modified at each change of regime. There are Napoleon III effigies whose portrait is alternately naked or laurelled. The 10-franc piece Ceres was reissued under the Third Republic until 1899. It was replaced by the 10-franc piece Marianne Coq minted between 1899 and 1914.
There are therefore four main types of 10-gold coins to which must be added the identical pieces in weight struck in the framework of the Latin Union. We will come back to it.
The half Napoleon of 10 gold francs have long been listed on the Paris Stock Exchange in the same way as coins of 20 gold francs. These coins were minted in rather large quantities. In total, between 1850 and 1914 more than 127 million pieces were manufactured. No less than 370 kilograms of gold were turned into 10-franc coins. This figure may seem high at first, but it is very small compared to the manufacturing figures of 20 gold coins. Between 1803 and 1914, more than half a billion pieces of 20 gold francs were manufactured, representing nearly 3000 tons of gold.
The pieces of 10 gold francs do not all have the same value. The least rare pieces are the 10 francs gold Napoleon III laureate head and bareheaded, followed by 10 francs coins Marianne Coq. Next are the 10 francs Napoleon III small coins, then the 10 francs Cérès IIème République and finally the 10 francs Cérès IIIème République coins, which were quickly replaced by the 10 francs coins Marianne Coq.
Among the very rare rarities are the 10 francs Cérès IIème République Flanc Bruni coins, minted in 1878 with only 30 copies. These coins are worth between 9000 and 13000 euro.
In general, the 10 gold coins in excellent condition can be sold at a price much higher than the value of the metal they contain. These coins have a numismatic value or a collection value if one prefers.
The 10 franc coins are also known and used as investment gold coins. In this case investors seek to buy them by paying the lowest possible premium in relation to their metallic value.
