Just curious, why not soak the encorted gold material in a large volume of the dilute nitric acid and just wait for all the base metals to go into solution?
@ExtractingMetals Жыл бұрын
Good question! The answer is simple. The nitric acid gets used up and all your left with is the metals in solution with water. Water dissolves metals very slowly so it would take about a decade without adding more nitric or changing out the solution for fresh nitric. The reddish brown gas is actually nitrogen dioxide. Once the nitrogen is depleted from releasing NO2 then it’s not even dilute nitric acid any more. The whole reaction is just an exchange of ions. Just like a battery, once the reaction gets too weak, it has to be recharged(in this case by adding fresh nitric)
@sreetips Жыл бұрын
Adding heat aids the reaction.

I had a video idea, 'Inquarting with gold'. Start with a gold-plated stock that's a bit under the concentration for inquartation. Then you have to add gold to raise it. For comparison, have a concurrent processing where you don't add gold and see if there's any benefit to raising the karat.

yeah gas is hugely subsidized and oil production is a market mess because of a bunch of factors, fiat currency only has as much value as people ascribe to it, and much of that boils down to perception, which means controlling gas prices

@sreetips Жыл бұрын
Gold filled is usually a thick sheet of karat gold that is bonded to brass. They heat both and then pass through a roller to bond them together. Getting a sheet of karat gold to bond to stainless would be difficult, but not impossible I suppose. Best way to get that gold off would be to use a sulfuric acid stripping cell.

The sulfuric acid reacts with any lead to form insoluble lead sulfate that can then be filtered out to remove all the lead from the gold. I add sulfuric whether I suspect lead or not. Why would you want to recontaminate your gold by incinerating the 1st filter with it?
@sreetips Жыл бұрын
Because it had a small amount of gold in it. The slow filtering is probably cause by the presence of tin. Tin dissolved in nitric creates a tin paste that clogs filters terribly. Incineration cause this tin paste to form another compound (I think it’s tin oxide) that is insoluble in acids. So incineration will solve the filtering problem for me. I’ll be sure to mention this in part 2.

I would love to see a video where you use a sulfuric acid stripping cell to remove the gold from gold filled scrap. Almost every video you make is pretty much redundant, dissolving everything and dealing with the copper and base metals at the end. I know you have made this type of video before, using the cell to remove plated gold from jewelry, but I have not seen any videos trying this with gold FILLED material..
@felsinferguson1125 Жыл бұрын
When it comes to "gold plated" vs "gold filled", the only significant difference between the two is how thick the layer of gold plating is. The "filled" piece has a thicker layer of gold on it than the "plated" piece. Everything else about them, including the stripping process, is identical.
@sreetips Жыл бұрын
I’ve run a sulfuric stripping cell. And after it gets saturated with gold it begins to not operate correctly. It heats up and the gold doesn’t come off well like it does when I first start the cell. If I shut it down and let it settle and cool, then it starts working properly. The gold plated stuff has a very thin coating of gold, almost nothing. So I can process a good bit of it before I have to shut it down. Gold filled is different. It has a coating of gold that’s hundreds of times thicker than gold plated. I believe that the cell would heat up rapidly and begin to act-up very quickly if gold filled was attempted. But I don’t know for sure because I’ve never tried it.

In the UK, it is entirely honest, in that each item (over 3mg) must be tested at one of the UK Crown Assay Offices. I trust UK gold and silver as genuine... I wound never trust Silver and Gold in the US, or anywhere else in the world. Without a regulated assay, your claims are void.
