Can't get more old school dentistry than this. Great demo.

I had many major inlays done in 1965 and 1966 with gold foil. I was 16. They are just as good as the day they were done- no maintenance required. I think they will last my entire life. And they are shiny and bright. I did not know at the time how special gold foil is. I cannot think of any other repair to the human body that really becomes integral to the tissue the way gold foil does. There is one dentist in Northbrook, Illinois who still does the gold foil restorations. He told me it takes an extra year of dental school to gain competence in gold foil restorations. The process may die out because it is permanent- dentists, like doctors, want repeat business. It is curious- so many "Treatments" in medicine and so few cures. Thank you for the video

It's no longer practical to do this type of treatment. Gold is expensive & this direct gold filling is only meant for very small cavities, which are unrealistic. People today have massive cavitations.

@@acash93 I had some small cavities and my dentist put in large amalgams that have now started cracking my teeth and require more serious things, gold foil clearly would have been the best option. Would happily pay more for something that is a good solution than go for the cheapest solution.

"He told me it takes an extra year of dental school to gain competence in gold foil restorations." He lied to you. Virtually any decent dentist could place a gold foil restoration. Some white filling techniques are more difficult. The reason most dentist don't offer them is insurance won't pay for them, and almost all patients are too cheap to pay for something insurance won't cover. Also imagine paying by the weight of gold required. You don't always know how big a cavity preparation will be until the tooth is entered. Imagine mid-appointment after getting numbed up the dentist tells you it will take another $100 of gold to complete. At the time of this writing, gold is around $2000 per ounce.

@@funkingitup1805 I don't normally agree with people, but this is absolutely correct. Most patients only want to do "what insurance will cover", and gold foils are (or were) taught fucking standard in any half-decent dental school.

Gold foil is only taught as a historical stepping stone these days. Not one graduating student or resident has actually seen the procedure or done one.

Nix the music please, and just give us the commentary. Yes, I did these in dental school in the late 60's, but never afterwards.

I have to abutments that were recently uncovered 29 & 30. I prefer gold full cast high noble metal crowns, is there a chance that the opposing molars above with amalgam may cause galvanism.
