Here you can see the gold leaf gilding process made by 22 carat gold leaves. It's quite interesting to see the way the leaf has to be lying down on the pillow using special tecniques. To gild an antique picture frame reproduction like that you need about 18 books of gold.

I loved and learned from this video. I use imitation gold leaf in my work as a painter but, when it is time for "serious" Art, I must be real gold leaf. The most important thing I have learned about gold leaf - if you want to learn about gilding as Art, not as a hobby, listen to what an Italian will teach you. The knife isn't magnetic. Even if it was the gold wouldn't be attracted to it as only iron,or alloys containing iron are attracted to a magnetic force

Wow you made it look easy. Superb technique Sir! Recently I have project that force me to learn the gilding technique, at first i thought how hard it could be? Boy was I wrong. Seeing you gilded like that, made me want to learn more about this technique. What is the purpose pillow like that you lay the leaf ? Is it must have tools for gilding? Is it special made or anyone can buy in a shop ? Thanx btw, keep up the superb work!

Here in Italy teh pillow is a special pillow made for gilding. Frankly I think you will be able to make yours by yourself. Just keep it enough Hard. The pillow doesn't have to be soft.

Use a wood chopping board. The 'pillow' is just a wooden board covered with thin suede, so that the suede grips the leaf, and the wood board is hard enough to allow a clean cut. If you pad it, it will not be hard. If you use only the board, it will not grip the leaf which could fly away or slide under knife. Common sense.

Do you seal or clear coat it with anything? I made a brass sculpture and used 23 K leaf, I could still scratch the leaf of with my fingurenail so I clear coated it like the rest of the sculpture. I tried to burnish it with the paper but it rubbed away.

It is quite difficult to protect gold on brass. I did it a couple of times using the kind of varnish used to protect the bottom of the boats. We call it "copale marina". It's plenty of brands out there. You need to do deep work to find out the best product, I mean the one which won't ruin your work. Good luck my friend
