Gold Pan Vs Fire Assay Pt 1: How To Gold Pan Very Fine Hard Rock Gold

This video is comparing gold panning and fire assaying for determining the amount of gold in an ore sample. It also includes a gold panning lesson on super fine hard rock gold! This sample was prospected and high graded from old dump piles. It is then crushed down and panned with a gold pan to recover the very fine hard rock gold. The gold is then recovered from the pan and using lead is cupelled to recover the a gold bead which is then weighed to determine the oz/ton or g/ton in the sample.

You should have pipetted your panning fines onto some sort of blotter paper and allowed that to dry before putting it in the cupelle. The would also add some carbon that might reduce some of the sulfides.

Hi Jason, when you put the first bit of lead in I thought that was a lot of lead for such a tiny amount of material. But then you added another 20gm or more. I get that when molten the lead needed to cover all the stuff you were cupelling, but why use >100 times as much lead as there was gold and sulphides? Could this have worked as well with 5gm of lead?

I recently found visible gold in a quartz matrix, but it's only visible under magnification. I was wondering if it's even worth my time to extract or just keep as a specimen. I'm in Oregon, found it on a gravel road, the host material also has copper and possibly silver as well. It's literally 1 1/2" minus crush, used to rock a logging road. 😂. Thanks for the information

@@mbmmllc How would you approach: Nano particles of Platinum and Palladium material (keyword "NANO" size) mixed in fine dirt? I have pounds and pounds of this material, but I'm unsure to what the best approach would be to refine it. I'm interested in the Fire Assay approach. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
