This is cool to see how to put a bearing back together. I appreciate the willingness to try and fix everything rather than throw everything away as we love to do here, though I get it that bearings aren't a good candidate for repair. I wish we could get more info about how long these types of repairs last.
@GGigabiteMАй бұрын
Depends on the application. If it were put into a high load, high speed application, it would break pretty much instantly. Even if it didn't break, the damaged balls would trash the race again and start generating a ton of heat and seize the whole thing up. If it were put into a low speed, low load application, it would survive for quite a long time, though it'd be noisy as hell. I would definitely wash the whole thing with a solvent to get out the dirt they introduced by throwing it on the ground. This bearing looks like it came out of one of those old single cylinder gas/kerosene/diesel engines, where it's used for the main crankshaft bearing. If it was used in such an application, it'd probably last for another 5, 10, 20 years. Those engines are so overbuilt, detuned and run at such a low RPM that it takes quite a bit being wrong with the engine for it to stop working. I've seen them with oval bores and trashed mains, yet they still kept running while smoking like a freight train.
@erikverkade3582Ай бұрын
@@GGigabiteM make a fair point about the low speed aplication. But why not throw a bronze bushing inthere instead of what ever the hell this is.
@GGigabiteMАй бұрын
@@erikverkade3582 A bronze plain bearing wouldn't really work for multiple reasons. The first is size, the difference between the ID of the ball bearing and the OD of the ball bearing is several inches, so you'd basically need a slug of crazy expensive bronze round stock. Or you'd have to install a large sleeve of something on the crank journal to make up the difference to use a thin bronze plain bearing. The next thing would be lubrication. A plain bearing like that would need pressurized lubrication to keep from seizing up, so you'd have to add an oil pump if the engine didn't have one. Lots of those old engines just worked on splash lubrication, but if you did have one with an oil pump, you'd have to redesign the oil system. The last is obviously tolerance. Ball bearings can be pretty sloppy and still somewhat work. The same can't be said for plain bronze bearings. Any scratch or gouge in the bearing is going to make it fail pretty quickly. An exception to that is if they used poured babbitt bearings, those bearings are designed to work on loose tolerances and are soft to allow debris to sink into the babbitt and not damage the journal. They'd still have to make a large sleeve for the crank though to make up the diameter difference.

As a welder by trade I can tell you this is all just a fools errand. This thing might last a few days in service but it will fail again. Bearing steel has a high chromium content and you need special electrodes or filler wires to weld it. Heat control while welding is mandatory and there is no evidence of that here. You may notice that after he welds the is a grayish dust like material next to his welds. That is chromium carbide which is a combination of chromium and carbon, the two main alloying constituents in bearing steel. When it appears it is a sign that you now have a form of mystery steel since you have changed the alloying contents in the steel. The next bit of information which would indicate problems is how the surface is refinished. You cannot use just any old grinding wheel. It has to be one specifically made for high chrome steel otherwise you will get contamination. In addition, you need special surface grinders to get the surfaces back the proper configuration and dimensions. An angle grinder and a die grinder with a stone are not going to cut it. The fact that they have a lot of dedicated tooling to do this job means they have done it many times before and I would like to believe that this is probably a situation to just get the machine up and running again while a new replacement is being shipped. You are not going to find bearings of this size on the shelf anywhere and they need to be ordered from the manufacturer. In truth though, I doubt very much if they are going to get a new bearing and will just do the same crap repair again when it fails again.
