Thanks for the video. I really admire your persistence. I think it would be really easy to give up on that strain of mollies after you lost the original breeders.

Charles this was very interesting. Any idea why they are called “wag”? What makes them a “wag”? What is the difference between sail fin, high fin and variatus? I absolutely love platys and really enjoy your videos and wealth of knowledge that you freely share! Thank you!
@goliadfarms70293 күн бұрын
I think "wag" comes from the black caudal (tailfin) wagging as the fish swims. Sailfin and Hifin in swords and platies is a dominant gene (properly allele). The characteristic was first found by Ms. Simpson in swordtails and was transferred to platies via hybridization. Molly sailfins are entirely different, requiring multiple genes. I'll cover this in a future molly video. Charles

I wonder if there may have been some differences in pH between the two houses that caused the breeding issues. Assuming the light and temps were the same, that's about the only other major difference I can think may cause issues. Cheers from North Florida!
@goliadfarms70293 күн бұрын
The two greenhouses have a common well source. Also, I check water parameters fairly frequently and pH and hardness are essentially the same. But who knows what happened in the aftermath of the Texas Winter Storm. Charles

Poaching Mollies. I love your stories about gorilla fish keeping 😂. Very interesting about the leaf litter causing infertility and in my opinion completely plausible. Also wild to hear that about the mesquite leaves! Could the ground water be contaminated with jettisoned cartel product?… I appreciate your videos. God speed

I'm sure the statute of limitations has expired on that expedition. I'm thinking of setting up some leaf tests with some fish next summer when it's warm enough to keep fish outside off system. Charles

Hi Charles. Do you ever buy new breeder fish, to put into a existing breeder coloni?
@goliadfarms70293 күн бұрын
We very rarely buy new breeders since quarantine is complicated in recirculating systems like our greenhouses. We quarantine for a long, long time (and test with some of our fish) in outside vats. That means we can only get new stock in the spring and fall when outside temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold. Charles

Have you put out a request of your customers if someone has the strain can they give you some back? Of course you would pay for them but you would get them back.
@goliadfarms70293 күн бұрын
I have not. I'll have Susie check previous retail sales to see if anyone has them. Most of our sales are wholesale to shops so we don't know who got the fish. Charles
