Good to have the video for those wondering. It is interesting how much overlap there was. There were pirates attacking other than Spanish ships in the buccaneer era, even if the raids against the Spanish were the most common. Later for example many of the Red Sea Roundsmen, menlike Tew, were privateers who de facto turned pirates but continued to have support in the American colonies. Indeed after men like John Quelch as a privateer captured a friendly Portuguese ship in Brazil he could not comprehend why he was hanged as a pirate and saw himself as a privateer bringing money to New England. Anyway the overlap was very significant. I think the modern terms in pop history give us indeed too clear cut image. The whole age of sea roving was indeed a period when even the legal terms were just being defined better. How rovers saw themselves was still behind the definition. Btw. A Madagascar pirate Dirk Schivers referred his crew as having "no country" as they had "sold their own" so he may have identified as a pirate as well as Hamlin, but I do not recall if he ever was caught using the term pirate of himself. Anyway anecdotocal as he was a foreigner among his mostly English company. Wonderfull content. Cheers! 🏴‍☠️

Usually when playing piracy focused games (Pirates, Sea Dogs, and similar games or space themed games of the type) I stick to the Privateer side of things though occasionally I'll dip into piracy. Usually only once or twice. Most common is if I'm getting frustrated obtaining a Frigate through other means I might capture a neutral Frigate, or if I'm really annoyed at how long its taking to get one I might seize a friendly Frigate then go back to hunting the enemy.

Pirates can be spotted mainly on the northern and larger zone of the Rook islands. They operate under the psychotic leadership of Vaas Montenegro and can be commonly found engaging in combat with members of the rakyat tribe. Their arsenal consists mainly of low to mid tier equipment such as AK-47’s, M-133 Shotguns, A-2000 Submachineguns, SVD sniper rifles and miscellaneous items like the PKM LMG and the RPG-7 Rocket launcher The pirates were annihilated almost entirely by Jason Brody, with a last rag tag formation of them being dispatched to the southern island well after the death of vaas and the severing of their relations with the privateers Privateers are the main fighting force of the southern island, and overall the strongest faction in the Rook Islands. They are an organized mercenary group that operates with extreme discipline and strategy, specially compared to the Pirates. Their leader, Hoyt Volker, is a ruthless slave and drug trader that rules the island like a mad king, having even Vaas as his underling. As well as their cosmetic differences, the equipment of the privateers reflects their more elite status, sporting P-416 Assault Rifles, SPAS-12 shotguns, Kriss Vector and Bizon SMG’s, the Z93 Anti-materiel rifle and other miscellaneous weapons such as the Flamethrower and the RPG-7 Before and after the death of Hoyt by the hands of Jason Brody, the ranks of the Privateers had taken severe losses, their state is unknown, but it is dubious that they will be able to reorganize after the end of the Rook campaign And that’s all the differences that I could think of, hope that was helpful :D

The legality of piracy has always fascinated me. I love how some guys like Thomas tew or Richard Taylor were just allowed to fall back into society (tew wasn’t so lucky the second time) but then Avery was the victim of an international manhunt and Blackbeard got assassinated despite having a pardon. Do you reckon there was an ‘art’ to sweet talking your way into legality that many captains practiced?

Would you consider German merchant raiders of the World Wars to be privateers?
@Glitter_H_Hoof
@Glitter_H_Hoof Жыл бұрын
they weren't owned by private individuals though
@Captain_Cinnamon
@Captain_Cinnamon Жыл бұрын
@@Glitter_H_Hoof I guess that really depends how it is seen. Is a privateer someone sailing someone else's ship to conduct sea robbery? then yes. Is a privateer someone with a document saying "this is a privateer and he is paid for it" then no. I think by old-age standards - no. They wouldn't since you need a commission to be a privateer. But If we look at it through a lens of truth then I think yes. All the "symptoms" would be exactly the same for the crew and also their victims. A piece of paper wouldnt change that really. The crew didnt own the ship and their victims were still raided. They were also not employed by the navy so ... its the same as saying is a 4-wheeled vehicle with a steering wheel and an engine to power at least 2 of those wheels a car? Well it has no license plate and it has no receipt proof of being a car. Yet the symtpoms are the same and the cops will still pull you over when you re speeding with it. I think when you re seeing things for what they are - then it would be fair to say yes they were privateers. Al beeth of course, modern day ones. times change and definitions change with that.

Which source says plain black flags began with privateers?
@CosplayZine
@CosplayZine Жыл бұрын
Not sure but I have read the black flag simply meant "quarter" (if you fight back you will die otherwise no harm will come) and then the red flag is said to have meant "no quarter" (you will die if you don't surrender right away) at least that is the way I understand it. The skull simply meaning a warning of death while the hour glass included meaning their time was almost up. I'd be willing to bet there were plenty of "privateers" after the treaty that would turn pirate out of pure nessasity who still flew the red flag as mentioned in the video and then eventually someone decided black was more scary and easier to both see and make. The tactics of the pursuer prior to showing the flag was likely more important than the flag itself since it was raised after it was too late..but at least the victim knew what they were in for if they chose to fight back after the true colors were raised. Avoiding confusion of intentions was the main goal in this scare tactic imo.

Where does the stupid word "privateer" come from? Who used it the first time? When? What was he or she thinking? Private? No way. And who cares being privateer or pirate, after being hung on a family gallows? Four men hung together, that's a party, right?
@CosplayZine
@CosplayZine Жыл бұрын
No need to be rude about it. But if you must know, the word privateer is steming from the word private which is often used as a ranking member. But the word teer was originally used by the English such as musketeer. However the word teer comes from the French being that "mousquetaire" is it's true origin. The word mousquet obviously meaning "musket" but the word "teer" substituted for taire which means "shut up" or "quiet" (ironically, what people should be told when they leave weird and rude comments) And so you see, they wanted the person to be a secret quiet marksmen for them aside from the usual military solider. A stealthy/private mercenary or quietly skilled bounty hunter/s basically.
@GoldandGunpowder
@GoldandGunpowder Жыл бұрын
Privateers were not given letters of marque as is popularily assumed, they could be given a Letter of Marque, but the Marque was just one of many types of commissions which were most commonly called "Commission for a Private Man of War", essentially a blanket maritime mercenary license. "Man of War" was the period term for a state-employed sailor or soldier. "Privateer" is short for "Private Man of War" and stems from the 1650s. Never heard it applied to land mercenaries. The word does not literally exist in other languages, but the translated word usually corresponds to their translation of the "Commission for a Private Man of War"(not Letter of Marque). For example: French: Letre du Course("Racing Letter"/"Course Letter" -> Corsairs Swedish: Kaparbrev(Capturing Letter) -> Kapare
