The Quest for the Holy Grail (The Self)

The Quest for the Holy Grail has fascinated the Western consciousness for a long time. It epitomises the true spirit of Western man and is, in many ways, the myth of Western civilisation. It is a perennial and timeless pattern that expresses fundamental concerns of the human condition.
The Holy Grail is a mysterious object guarded by a king in a hidden castle. It has been described as a cup, dish, or a magical stone that can provide healing powers, immortality, eternal youth, and unlimited nourishment. It represents the fulfilment of the highest spiritual potentialities in human consciousness, which endows the world with a symbolic and spiritual meaning. The quest for the Holy Grail is always more or less the same, it is the hero’s journey, at the end of which one obtains the “treasure hard to attain.” It is the search for that which makes life most meaningful.
Psychologically, the Holy Grail-like the philosophers' stone-is a symbol of the Self, the psychic totality and ultimate wholeness of the human being. The soul which represents the life principle, is that wondrous vessel which is the goal of the quest, whose final secret can never be revealed, but must ever remain hidden because its essence is a mystery.

The references to a valley, a bowl 🥣, a chalice/cup all share the form of the crescent 🌙, 🐂(horn (of plenty)), and cradle, as in the “cradle of civilization”. The Fertile Crescent 🌙, a place of aBUNdance. Not too mention, the numerous sports that involve a cup, a bowl or a ring (kiss the ring)/don/dom(inion) as a prize for persevering and winning. Fulfillment as the word implies conjures the idea of being filled and whole. *Phil ~ love* However, I understand feeling on multiple layers: 1. Physical Touch 2. Physiological/Emotional feeling (I.e. I’m touched by your kind words). 3. Gut feeling often described as an intuitive knowing where one has an understanding that surpasses any visible know-how such as books or learning institutions. It’s a knowing that’s generated through a connection with what some call the divine/universe/god(s). One might relate the concept of the Grail to the card of Temperance in Tarot. The Grail is not special necessarily because of the end process of alchemical mixing, although that is a grand goal. The large and minute processes needed to mix, flow, transfer and process the materials WITHIN the Grail are what give it meaning before and during. The Grail is a representation of physical body, and the alchemical tincture within is the spiritual and psychological forces churning within; once it is perfected, cast aside your physical body. Temperance is about finding BALANCE in the chaos of material and psychological compounds. Not too much, not too little.

Percival is the one who persists. The Grail is found through persistence. In a way, the Grail is persistence itself, as the life of a man who does not persist (in his profession, in marriage, in fidelity to his country, etc.) is erratic and tragicomic. Anyone who is always trying to start something new at some point realizes that he has wasted his life without really being able to complete something worthy of admiration. The Grail story has deep personal and psychological significance. But to understand it, the reader needs to see what Percival does and not the details of what he did. Percival finds the Grail because he doesn't give up chasing it, even when he feels like stopping he persists. Therefore, the Grail secret does not exist. His truth is what has always been obvious and yet ignored or unseen by those who disdain persistence. ​
