do you need anything else than xlr cables for the comp 54 ? I really like the sound of it

It has both xlr and trs connections on the back so any balanced cable will work to go in and out of this unit. Fully standalone. I love this eq and compressor combo even to this day!

Thanks for a good review! have you tried Golden Age Project PRE-73 MK3 (mk2) ? Is any good or coloration+muffled lowmids are to much?

Do you prefer the comp 54 or comp 3a jr on acoustics?

3a Jr for basic compression and control that doesn't sound like its being squashed, I use the 54 for aggressive color basically to accent tones or to lock things in

I do use it alot and like it. But I prefer my preq73 premier. Golden age preamp and 1073 style eq. Its a little more colored but isn't as flexible. While the 81 is cleaner but has alot more flexibility

@@IntheDAW I’ve been looking at the preq73 as well. I track mainly vocals and acoustic guitars. Was just in the market for a versatile eq for acoustics. I have an ART voice channel and APHEX channel strip. The EQs on those aren’t as versatile but they do impart some nice color. So I’ve been leaning towards the 81 instead of the preq73.

@@IntheDAW "the 81 is cleaner"?? That's it I canceled my order then. If I wanted clean I'd use a plugin FFS I hate these companies making "clean" outboard gear

It's a very colored eq but it's cleaner in the sense that you don't get artifacts on the high and low end. That's something I hear alot with software emulations alot. I like the clearer and more defined low and high end of this vs plugins

The 3A if I'm going for a smoother more subtle sounding compression. Ideally I would use both. One for smoothing things out and the other for clamping the faster peaks and adding more color.
